The beginning of Alpharetta's history can be found in the 1830s, when pioneers and settlers came to the region in search of the community's promise of land ownership, starting families, and productive farmland. From its modest beginnings as a trading post, the area prospered, and on December 11, 1858, the City of Alpharetta was founded; it later became the administrative center for Milton County.
Even though Alpharetta has faced hardships in the past, such as the smallpox epidemic of 1863 and the Civil War's devastation, it has always managed to survive and even thrive. Milton County, which was in dire financial straits in 1932 as the Great Depression was wreaking havoc on the country, merged with Fulton County to ensure the continuation of services and future prosperity.
Through the 1980s, Alpharetta was still a small, largely rural community, but soon after, it began to grow and became one of the most prosperous places in the country. In 1980, there were only 3,000 people living in the community. Today, there are more than 65,000 people living there, and on workdays, that number rises to more than 100,000. In terms of population, Alpharetta is currently the 12th most populous city in Georgia. It is also home to some of the best educational institutions in the country and is widely referred to as the "Technology City of the South" due to the abundance of tech-related businesses.
