...Analysis of the fragments from ‘The Passionate Year’ by James Hilton The fragments from ‘The Passionate Year’ written by English writer James Hilton is under our interpretation. The problems of teacher and pupil are touched upon in these passages. Here we can read about the problem of a new teacher and how children rag him. But a teacher can have a strong will and won’t let his pupils make jokes at him, how to manage them. The author of this story is omniscient, he goes through the psychological characterization, and using the third person narration, tells us a straight-form story about a young teacher, Kenneth Speed, who is the central character, who came to his new class and had been warned about the children’s possible misbehaviour. The story is set in a class-room and this is a realistic setting. The plot of the story is simple and the story is divided by the author to two parts: ‘Speed in class’ and ‘The conversation between Speed and Clanwell’. But I want to offer the further division: the first part can be subdivided to three more – ‘Speed’s expecting worse’, ‘Misbehaviour’ and ‘Punishment’. I think such a division of the story to logical parts was made to form the matches: the first sub-part is the opening, the second is the climax (the passage telling about laughter), and the third is the denouement. The last part which is separated by...
...“Ten Days That Shook the World” is a book by American journalist and socialist John Reed about the October Revolution in Russia in 1917, which Reed experienced firsthand. Reed followed many of the prominent Bolshevik leaders, especially Grigory Zinoviev and Karl Radek, closely during his time in Russia. John Reed died in 1920, shortly after the book was finished. John Reed’s classic account of the Russian Revolution of November 1917 isn’t an attempt at large-scale dispassionate historical analysis, but an eyewitness account of the Bolsheviks’ rise to power. It is a mark of the respect in which Reed was held by the Bolsheviks that “Ten Days That Shook The World” was published with a short but very appreciative introduction by no less than Lenin, in which the Russian socialist leader says that he would like to see Reed’s book ``published in millions of copies and translated into all languages’’. The book certainly captures the spirit of the days leading up to and following the revolution of November 7: it is based largely on notes that Reed personally took at the time, on hundreds of Russian newspapers that he collected, and is interspersed with quotes from proclamations, decrees and announcements recovered from the walls of Petrograd. Despite the fact that Reed was firmly on the side of the Bolsheviks, though, it’s not a fake history such as those later put out by Stalin and his followers: Reed never stifles the voices of the opponents of the Bolsheviks,...
...UNIT ONE TEXT ONE THE PASSIONATE YEAR By James Hilton (Fragments) James Hilton (1900— 1954) was born in England and educated at Cambridge where he wrote his first novel, "Catherine Herself". His first big success came with the publication of "Good-bye, Mr. Chips". It was dramatized and filmed. "Lost Horizon" published in 1933 was awarded the Hawthornden Prize. Some of his other books are: "We Are Not Alone" (1937), "Random Harvest" (1941), "Nothing So Strange" (1947), "Time and Time Again" (1953). A resident of the United States since 1935, he died in Long Beach, California. (Kenneth Speed, B.A., a young Master at Millstead Boarding School for boys, was warned that the first night he takes prep1 he might be ragged2 as it was a sort of school tradition that they always tried to rag teachers that night. Preparation for the whole school was held in Millstead Big Hall, a huge vault-like chamber in which desks were ranged in long rows and where Master in charge sat on high at a desk on a raised dais.) Speed was very nervous as he took his seat on the dais at five to seven and watched the school straggling to their places. They came in quietly enough, but there was an atmosphere of subdued expectancy of which Speed was keenly conscious; the boys stared about them, grinned at each other, seemed as if they were waiting for something to happen. Nevertheless, at five past seven all was...

...The text under interpretation is the extract from novel “The Passionate Year” by James Hilton. First of all let me start with some words about the author. So James Hilton was an outstanding and best -selling English writer of the 20th century. He made a great contribution to the world literature. And the facts that his novel “Good bye Mr Chips was dramatized and filmed, and more over his novel “Lost Horizon “ was awarded the Hawrthornden Prize prove his contribution. Besides these two novels James Hilton was famous for such his works as “We are not alone”, “Random Harvest”, “Nothing so strange”, “Time and Time again” etc. So, the main characters of the text, whose dispositions and behaviours arebrightly disclosed with the help of mixed type of character drawing, are Kenneth Speed, a young Master at a Millstead Boarding School for boys, sweet-faced but impudent pupils Worsley and Naylor. The minor characters are other pupils in the class and Clanwell. The author with the help of third person narration with the elements of description an dialogue told about the trials which a young teacher Speed had to suffer and overcome during the first night he took prep. Including only few hours of Speed’s workday the text touches upon the problem of such challenge for a teacher as gaining a firm standing from the very beginning. This text impressed me greatly.First of...
...Character drawing The text under analysis is an extract from the novel "The passionate year" by James Hilton. It concerns the problems a new teacher faces in his class. The protagonist of the extract is a new Master at school for boys, Mr. Speed, who in fact represents the generalized image of all young teachers. The antagonists are the boys united by the author into the assembly which acts as a whole. Hilton singles out only two pupils, “a bright, rather pleasant-faced boy” and “a lean, rather clever-looking” one, to create even more detailed picture of the behavior and the personality of children of middle teenage. There are almost no examples of characterization through appearance in the extract, probably because the appearance is irrelevant to the story. The author is more interested in the inner world of the characters, their feeling and their reactions in different situations. Thus the most frequent methods of characterization used in the text are character through speech, through psychological analysis and through action. For instance, we can say that Speed was a sensible person as he was “keenly conscious” of “an atmosphere of subdued expectancy”. Although everything seemed to be “quiet” and “orderly” in the beginning of the lesson Speed knew that the children would try to rag him and he was very excited about it. The Speed’s nervousness is highlighted by the use...
