I really loved this mini series. It is split into two parts, both of which are about 90 minutes long. The first half is more focused on the 1950's era when Betty (the main character) has her affair with Craze, her Polish neighbor. And the second half is about Betty thirty years later on her son's wedding day. My favorite part was the first part when you really get to see the affair and how much in love with Craze, Betty becomes. I could really feel just how much she longed/wanted to be with him and while I don't agree with affairs I was finding myself hoping that the two could find a way to be together. The second part was good as well, though it is very different from the first. It's thirty years later and we see what her life is like with her husband and son. Set mostly during her son's wedding day, Betty keeps seeing hallucinations of Craze throughout the day. Let's just say the ending had me in tears, happy tears. The two parts could really be seen as different movies all together as they don't really center in on the same thing. Part one was certainly my favorite but two has its moments as well. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who love's period dramas.

I can only agree with the glowing reviews here. I've recently become an ardent fan of Divergent hottie Theo James and got this movie because of him and, of course, I'm a sucker for romance. This wonderful two-part series definitely met my expectations--especially the steamy and passionate scenes between Billie Piper and Theo. Another fan favorite Alun Armstrong had me cracking up throughout the second part. Sue Johnston was so good. It was a well-cast and a poignant love story indeed! I highly recommend! Btw...Theo is a solid actor and I hope he gets more romantic roles in the future, because he's so great as a leading man ;)

Wow! I fell in love with this movie and Theo James, all in the same breathe! He is overly sexy and handsome! The only reason, I purchased this, is after watching Divergent. I heard he was in this movie, so I purchased it. Great acting! Awesome love scenes! He and Billie Piper were great together! I love her in Dr. Who! All in all, I love the movie, it aired in England!

This is well developed and a story of the complex emotions of a woman whose affair ended badly and she never quite recovered. Her journey is sad and upsetting as she muddles her way through life. The acting was excellent. It's done in two distinct parts, each equal in importance.

Shipped on time. I liked the first disk a lot better than the second disk. good over all :)

This is a great 2 part series. The acting was great, and you see the movie from several perspectives. I have watched twice already!

Love Theo James and this series was great. Billie Piper was fantastic as the older Betty.

Theo James = uber sexy in part 1 of this great dvd so hot ( oh my 4)

Beautiful, sad, sexy, thought-provoking

I loved the first half. The back streets of Leeds and the 1950s atmosphere are really well evoked; additionally the 'hangover' from the war years and the racial attitudes of some of the residents. It is indeed very very passionate and both Theo James and Billie Piper give excellent performances. I admit the main reason I wanted to see this was Theo James, but I have enjoyed several Kay Mellor productions on TV over the years. While the premise of the second half is interesting, I did find parts of it a bit clunky. It seems incredible to me that someone could keep a secret like that for so long, but I guess I'm of a different generation. It gets a bit farcical towards the end and I would almost have preferred a bad ending to be honest; I couldn't really forgive Donald for being so blind all those years. I really did enjoy the performance of Moira when she returned though; very raw and powerful, and Betty's son was well played too. Thought provoking, very very sad and makes me so grateful I was born in the 70s and I'm married to a passionate man!

Love Is Where You Find It

The grimy back streets of Leeds in the 1950s. In a shabby, damp-ridden flat Betty, mother of a young child, is trapped in an apparently loveless marriage to Donald, a foundry worker. In a dance hall she meets and falls passionately in love with a Polish immigrant called 'Craze'. Thirty years later, as the wedding of her adored son Mark is imminent, her past catches up with her in ways she could not have foreseen. Kay Mellor's stage play-into-television film is based on her own mother's life. In style it is cut from rather conventional cloth (lashings of sex in the first half)and is slightly marred by a protracted, as well as a somewhat farcical, climax and an overly sentimental ending. Nevertheless Mellor achieves some genuinely emotional depth and there are two fine performancec from Billie Piper and Sue Johnston as the young Betty and the old Betty, respectively. The DVD set includes interviews with the writer and the two actresses, among others, and these are a little less tedious than is usual with such behind-the-scenes extras. Viewers familiar with Leeds will recognise a number of the locations.

DVD 1 covers the meeting between Theo James & Billie Piper's characters and their passionate affair DVD 2 picks up several years later with Sue Johnson taking over the Billie Piper role and the implication of the affair haunts her as she prepares for her only son's wedding. A very moving story which I would thoroughly recommend. A naked Theo James is obviously not to be missed but the story is believable and could have happened to any housewife during this time who feels unwanted by her husband. Romance, Tragedy, Mystery this story has it all. You'll laugh and cry during this DVD and although Theo James does not appear often in this second DVD he does make cameo appearances during flashback memory moments. A touching story. Would Recommend

Absolutely brilliant viewing

Other reviews I've read have said how brilliant Billie Piper and Sue Johnston are and I have to echo that. They both give brilliant, emotional performances as Betty - a woman who tells her life across two different decades. It was a joy to see Andrew-Lee Potts as Betty's son Mark, having seen him in Primeval I thoroughly enjoyed see him play someone different. Alun and Joe Armstrong deserve some recognition for their portrayal of Betty's husband Donald. The fact that they are father and son made it more believable that Alun played an older version of Joe. I thought they were fantastic in it and am becoming a great fan of the two of them - not just Joe!

Best British Film. Ever!

When this two-part mini-series first appeared on our screens in 2010 I had no idea at the time that it would change my life forever! I watched it on BBC iPlayer until it was no longer available, then I sat on the Amazon DVD pre-order list for many months before it finally arrived in February this year. I'm now out of an unhappy marriage, back to the job I loved, embarking on a life-changing hobby that will see me travelling the world, financially secure and happy with my lot for the first time in years. Back to being the passionate woman I always was! All thanks to this!

Against her principles, she abandons herself to a world of untapped thrills and passion, feelings that have been so desperately missing from her own conventional, claustrophobic marriage. Thirty years later, an older Betty ( Sue Johnston - Waking the Dead ) comes to realize that the consequences of her past compulsive passion have created ripples that spill far into the future, finally reaching a crisis point on her beloved son's wedding day.
