Onetime lovers, unexpected rivals... Emmett McCabe never expected to see Sydney Stevens―a woman with whom she'd shared a brief, incendiary connection before it all went up in flames―again. Luckily, ascending the cutthroat ladder of a high-pressure surgery residency to reach the top spot makes it easy to ignore what's missing in her life. Then Sydney reappears after nearly five years. Emmett is barely over her shock when she discovers Sydney is her new competition for the coveted chief's position everyone, including Emmett, expects will be hers. Professional rivalry and long-simmering passions create a combustible combination when the two are forced to work together, especially when past attractions won't stay buried.

For $10, I felt this to be a bit short, and not as gripping as I'd thought it would be. The story flowed well enough, and the medical scenes were pretty good. I appreciated the efforts the author took to provide context so that I wasn't lost in the medical jargon. I felt I had a pretty good picture in my head of where everything was, how people looked, and the general atmosphere in each scene, and the progression of events felt immersive for me. The characters weren't bad, but weren't stellar. I liked them, but I keep comparing them to characters in another medical-scenario-related lesbian romance novel called Who'd Have Thought, that I read not too long ago, and enjoyed a lot. I've come to notice that I enjoy stories much more if characters backgrounds permeate their existence during the story. In this novel, we really only got a little glimpse into the main characters' backgrounds, and the Syd background felt a bit cliched. I'm not saying the motivation behind her behavior couldn't happen, but that it felt like the author was grabbing at low-hanging fruit. Part of what made the novel feel short, was the abrupt way in which both characters, with demonstrated strong personalities, just sort of got over themselves and decided to be "in love." I like a good ending, and they pretty much did end up the way I wanted them to, but it felt like the requisite journey to get there was missing. The interwoven journey toward a true connection just didn't seem to be present, leaving me with the idea that the two of them were just infatuated with each others' bodies, and I'd be expecting a break-up to be happening within months, rather than a long-lasting true-love relationship that their mentors appeared to have. Perhaps I'm being too critical, and I'm probably not a member of the author's target audience, but think the author could do better, especially for the price of the novel. I look forward to seeing if she does.
This book read like a mostly lesbian version of Greys Anatomy. You had the new residents from another hospital, you had the many different surgeries, you had the vying for chief resident and the bunch of residents sharing a house. There was even sex in the on call rooms. Throw in a little romance and you have a story. I don't feel like the romance was well done. Even the whole get together then temporarily seperate thing was a bit contrived. They both came off as socially inept people who were married to their job. I didnt see them as an obvious couple. The romance seemed stuffed in to the second half of the book. Given the fact the majority of the story took place in the hospital there was bits of the romance story stuffed here and there. The medical stuff was interesting though. It was an okay read but I've read better from this author.
My very first Radclyffe book started at Philadelphia, Medical College with Fated Love and I've been a fan ever since. So I was totally pumped when this book came out and I was not disappointed. One reviewer called this a lesbian Grey's Anatomy and I totally agree. Radclyffe really showed off her surgical knowledge in this one. I was hooked from the very first page. Sid and Emmett has history, they have passion, but they're also competing for the same position of Chief Resident. The supporting cast added spice and the cameos from the first couple in the Radclyffe universe, Honor and Quinn, added substance to the story without over-powering it. It was nice to be excited about a Radclyffe novel again because some of her later stuff fell a little short. It's always nice to go back home. Well done. Oh, if you have the means, I do suggest that you get the audio. Lori Prince was magnificent in her narration!
Just read the books. Radclyffe is a great writer, she keeps you engaged in the story and you lose sleep. What else is there to say.
Very enjoyable read. I enjoyed catching up with some of the characters from the series. Hospital medical romance between doctors this author does them best. Thanks for another winner.
I really enjoyed this story and the opportunity to reconnect with favorite characters Honor Blake, Quinn Maguire, and Linda and of course, young Arly. I always enjoy stories that include these characters and this story is no different. The main characters Emmett and Syd had tremendous chemistry. The merging of residents from the two hospitals reminded me of Grey’s Anatomy and when they merged with residents of Seattle Mercy-West. A very compelling dynamic that makes perfect sense and in the background there is this very strong love story between Emmett and Syd. It was a good read and here is hoping that there will be more stories of Hope, Quinn and the gang. Keep this up, and Arly will make it to med school!
Radclyffe is an excellent story teller. I've purchased probably 85% of her novels and I've loved almost all of them (usually 5 stars). I characterize her stories as mainly "medical thriller lesbian romance dramas" - yes, a lot of great genres in one book every time. So, I was greatly disappointed with this story. While it was extremely well-written, as usual, it contained significantly more medical focus and technical jargon and extensive descriptions of medical procedures. This is a great component of her novels which is based on her knowledge/experience as a surgeon, but this was excessive. At least 70% of the book focused on surgical procedures with so much detail, those passages were boring and lost my attention. Despite my low rating, I do recommend the story and absolutely the author. If I had never read any of Radclyffe's other books, this one probably would have had a 4 star rating. Since I was distracted and bored at various points and know that her stories are always more riveting, the rating went down.

An unexpected transfer causes Syd to face her past.
An ‘old-flames’ encounter played-out in the dramatic setting of a trauma unit – 3 Stars When cuts in government funding result in the closure of Franklin’s medical training program, Sydney Stevens finds herself transferred to PMC. With only another year of training to complete, Syd was hoping to secure the coveted post of Chief Resident. While Syd is prepared to prove herself among the competitive field, she’s not looking forward to meeting fellow PMC fourth-year, and ex-lover, Emmet McCabe. Due to the need to set the back-story for the merging of the Franklin and PMC teams, there are a lot of characters introduced early in the book. There is also a considerable amount of time spent explaining the training structure. With the ground-work laid-out, the story continues and invites the reader to learn more about the characters as they work through a number of trauma cases. The medical detail is excellent, and, as a bonus, regular readers of Radclyffe will be pleased that Quinn and Honor feature prominently in this novel too. For much of the story, specifics of the history between the protagonists, Syd and Emmett, remains cloaked in secrecy, and the ‘big reveal’ is saved for the final few chapters. Unusual for a Radclyffe novel, for the most-part, I didn’t feel the relationship between Syd and Emmett sizzled with tension or any degree of passion. While the medical-soap side of the story cracks along at a gallop, the romantic element is very sedate. Syd and Emmett don’t share as much as a clandestine kiss for the bulk of the novel! Overall, this was an ok read, but (with the exception of the last couple of chapters), it just didn’t have that unique ‘Radclyffe-factor’ that makes me want to devour a book in one sitting.

Disappointing.
I’ve not read a Radclyffe book for awhile and if I’m perfectly honest I’m sorry I wasted my money on this one. I have been a fan of Radclyffe’s work since she started and always felt that your were guaranteed a good read. Passionate Rivals is lacking a decent plot. The storyline is predictable and the characters are flat. There was far too much description of medical procedures which felt like they were put in as page fillers. If the time had been spent on developing the characters and the plot instead of describing the minutia of the medical procedures it might well have been a better book.

Start of a new series
This is the starting point for a new medical series from Rad in an established setting from earlier series she created. Easy to pick up if you have no prior history with her writings. Our two leads are plunged into working together in competition for a competitive hospital spot but it seems they already knew each other. There is a lot of medical detail but I didn’t mind and we slowly see the main characters resolve their difficulties and progress to a positive ending as all good Rad novels do. The additional characters presented will no doubt be explored as key characters in future novels in this universe. Overall a good book with credible detail worth taking a chance on.
Radcliffe never disappoints. This book is engaging and the characters are great. The storyline is good.

Great afternoon read
As always a great read from this author, I loved the premise and the interactions of characters from other novels in this loose series. The end felt a wee bit rushed around the characters careers but overall still a good book.
