PETA has once again found itself on the wrong side of public opinion after sparking a huge backlash from its tweets criticizing the late Steve Irwin, a much-loved TV presenter and wildlife conservationist who passed away in 2006.
The animal rights group decided to go on the attack on what would've been Irwin's 57th birthday after Google chose to honor the wildlife biologists' memory with one of their 'doodles.'
“Today's Google Doodle celebrates Steve Irwin, the legendary Australian wildlife advocate & TV personality whose bravery & passion opened the eyes of millions to the wonders of wildlife," Google tweeted, alongside a sweet tribute picture of the 'crocodile hunter.' People's reactions were overwhelmingly positive, sharing their favorite memories of the lovable larrikin and some saying they were moved to tears.
However, PETA, with their usual smug, contrarian and joy-killing attitude, was having none of it. "Steve Irwin was killed while harassing a ray," they wrote. "He dangled his baby while feeding a crocodile and wrestled wild animals who were minding their own business. Today's Google Doodle sends a dangerous, fawning message. Wild animals are entitled to be left alone in their natural habitats."
Needless to say, people were far from impressed. While there may be a glimmer of a point in PETA's scandalous statement, Irwin did, of course, dramatize his show by getting quite physical with animals at times, his fans were quick to point out the hypocrisy of PETA. Some highlighted the rate at which PETA kills animals in their shelters and their lack of tangible conservation efforts; Irwin and his family founded and maintain a large conservation sanctuary, contributing to the protection and rehabilitation of thousands of animals, while PETA seems to spend more and more time creating divisive and controversial 'awareness' campaigns.

Steve Irwin's family run Australia Zoo, which was opened by Steve's parents Bob and Lyn back in 1970. Steve had helped his parents since childhood to care for crocodiles and reptiles and to maintain the growing number of animals in the zoo. As Steve's TV show grew in popularity and generated extra funds, Steve and his wife Terri put all money raised from filming and merchandise into conservation and building new exhibits.
The TV series was called Crocodile Hunter and Steve co-hosted it with his wife Terri. It debuted on Australian TV screens in 1996 and made its way onto North American television the following year. The show soon became successful in the United States, the UK,and over 130 other countries, almost 500 million people came to be familiar with Steve's unique personality. His enthusiastic presenting style, broad Aussie accent, and catchphrases like "Crikey!" became known all over the world. Sir David Attenborough, the iconic British nature presenter, was also a fan of Steve and credited him for introducing many to the natural world. "He taught them how wonderful and exciting it was, he was a born communicator," he said.

Steve was incredibly passionate about animals and conservation, and thought that sharing his excitement about the natural world rather than preaching to people was the best way to promote environmental awareness. He was particularly concerned with the conservation of endangered animals and land clearing, which leads to loss of habitat. He considered conservation to be the most important part of his work: "I consider myself a wildlife warrior. My mission is to save the world's endangered species," he once said.
Steve founded the 'Steve Irwin Conservation Foundation,' which became an independent charity and was later renamed 'Wildlife Warriors Worldwide.' He also helped found 'International Crocodile Rescue, 'the 'Lyn Irwin Memorial Fund' (named in memory of his mother, who died in an automobile crash in 2000), and the 'Iron Bark Station Wildlife Rehabilitation Facility.'

On the 4th September 2006, Steve was on location at Batt Reef, near Port Douglas, Australia, filming the documentary series Ocean's Deadliest . In his spare time, Steve decided to snorkel in shallow waters while being filmed, he wanted to help get some footage for his daughter, Bindi, and her television programme.
While swimming in chest-deep water, Steve approached a short-tail stingray from the rear, so he could film it swimming away.
According to the incident's only witness, “All of a sudden [the stingray] propped on its front and started stabbing wildly with its tail. Hundreds of strikes in a few seconds”. Irwin initially believed he only had a punctured lung. However, the stingray's barb pierced his heart, causing him to bleed to death. The stingray's behaviour appeared to have been a defensive response to being boxed in.

Peta is a garbage organisation and everyone should stop supporting it, the are plenty of animal's rights organizations you can support that actually care about the animals
Steve's legacy lives on, through his various conservation organisations and his family, who still own and run Australia Zoo. “We want to make sure that his message of wildlife and conservation continues,” his daughter, Bindi, said. “Because he was the world’s greatest conservationist and we never want that message to die.”
Yep, Peta should stop pretending they care about animals, and they should stop using a dead man in order to make people talk about them

Angela Williams you are wrong! He died because the sting ray was just fine swimming with him until the sting ray got spooked by something and Steve was just in the wrong spot.

Is PETA taken seriously by anyone these days...?
Many people are getting really, REALLY fed up with organisations like Peta. While continuously lecturing (pointing that little finger) other people while responsible for enormous scandals themselves. Also the directors of organisations such as these pay themselves HUGE salaries while the company main workforce are volunteers, is a bit cringy. The exact same goes for Greenpeace, Oxfam Novib, Amnesty International, Pink Ribbon to just name a few......
Sadly, due to their name alone, many people simply assume by default that they are a pro-animal organization. They get donations from people who care about animals and don't know that PETA kills.
Next to Peta, Greenpeace (permanently damaging the Nazca Lines, almost causing a nuclear waste train to derail in the Netherlands, their famous ship Rainbow Warrior, after its years of service, found on 1 of the most polluted shipyards in Bangladesh & this list goes on & on....) are among the most hypocritical organisations known to mankind. Don't give your money to large organisations like these (just because they have some nobody-celebrity as some kind of "PR-ambassador"), just volunteer or spend your money towards a local charity! Also in the Netherlands it was quite big news that Pink Ribbon, only spend approx. 288,000 Euros of 16 MILLION Euro's in total collected.... yeah that is a WHOPPING: 1,8% directly spend on its "charity" for breast cancer research........ the rest were "marketing costs" :-/ I wonder how Peta's expenditure list looks like.......
PETA is a widely known organisation and the news about scandals just move slowly in some circles.
Sadly, yes. I was talking to a classmate of mine about an assignment we were doing: a debate in Spanish over whether or not bullfighting should be legal. We were both assigned to the proposition (the "yes" side.) She was ranting about how furious she was that she had to be on this side because bullfighting was hands-down the worst thing she had ever heard of. I knew she was an animal rights advocate (a self-proclaimed animal lover who owned 5 cats but hated dogs IDK.) Suddenly I sarcastically asked, "Are you one of those PETA supporters?" It was sort of a half-joke. But she replied, "Yeah, they are the best organization out there! They do so much good for the animals! Like that one "Got Autism" ad? That was really eye-opening! I think it was one of the first things that turned me vegan!" I found it hard to continue that friendship.

Did you at least try to educate her re: PETA, as in giving her links, etc? Sometimes it works! Did for me, 'tho I stumbled across info inadvertently.
Renee Spencer: I tried. She was stubborn. She just said that all the negative stuff was "just lies by bitter people, ok?!" and all the obviously messed up articles by PETA were "actually helping a lot of animals, ok?!"
I just wish people would stop donating any money to PETA so they would die out. Unfortunately there are still people who agree with them.

It's more complicated than that because the donators agree with 97% of what PETA says. It's that last 3%, the headline grabbing idiocy they spout that turn people off.
Well.... they are not ENTIRELY wrong - it is better to just leave wildlife alone, instead of mandhandling it, but, Jeez, bashing Steve Irwing? There are SO MANY aquariums, circusses, zoos, tourist rip-offs where wild animals are kept and tortured for human entertainment, why on earth would you bash on a conservationist whose mission in life was protect wildlife?? PETA is insane.
PETA seem to be doing very little for actual animal welfare other than campaigns.
I vagueley remember the beginnings when they broke into research labs or stopped animal transports. They did raise important awareness and started some important progress. At least, I think it was PETA. It is a very long time ago. But somewhere along the way they must have turned into an obscure cult that suddenly does lawsuits against photographers for abusing the copyright of a monkey. I have no idea if they are playing a kind of long game, but the news I heard from them in the past decade has been between absurd and horrendous. They don't kill pets where I live. All sacntuaries are no-kill since it's not legal to kill a pet without medical reason - and, yes, there is an absurd discrepancy between pets and farmed animals. But they still acquired a very bad rep.
While I agree Irwin did perform some shows at his zoo, he didnt just manhand animals for fun. The animals that were moved or resumed, were done so because they were being pushed out of their current homes and he was trying to move them to a safer spot...for them!
The animals in his shows at his zoo, I think, were used to working with him, knew him, and were not afraid of him. They were well kept and he did not taunt them and did respect that they were very dangerous animals even though he was used to working with them.
The bottom line is, like you said, PETA is insane. Irwin's main and most important goal was the welfare of the animals. If you watched his show, he emphasized the importance of leaving them in the wild and how dangerous they could be.
What 'taunting' he did was to keep the animals active and healthy. Like making them 'work' for their food--same as they'd do in the wild!
Agreed. Thanks to this mentality, ppl drag sharks out of the sea for selfies, harass seal pups, etc. oroh we have ppl save beached whales, try to stop the horror of Taiji. It’s a mixed bag.
Yep. And I refuse to go see a circus, aquarium or zoo, because of this reason.
Zoos and aquariums have an important function. They educate people and sensitize them to animals (we wouldn't have the enormous push against Big Game Hunting and poaching without people seeing these animals in zoos!) and they breed endangered species for genetic diversity and re-release to the wild to keep the species alive in their native habitat. Oh, yeah, and they provide a haven for animals from the wild too injured to be returned to the wild, taken too young because of parent loss and imprinted on humans, or who became nuisance animals and otherwise would be killed. If you have a better alternative, I'd like to hear it. Humans are damned destructive.
I just don't go see circuses because clowns suck.
