Born in Leicester, Parminder Nagra is Britain's first Indian actress to make it big in Los Angeles, landing the lead role of surgeon Neela in the US medical drama, ER , six years ago.
' Bend It Like Beckham was my breakthrough film,' says Nagra.
'But for years after the only movies I was offered were about arranged marriages. Then I got onto ER and things changed.'
Soon to be seen on TV in Compulsion with Ray Winstone, Nagra is married to photographer James Stenson (who took this picture for Live ) and is expecting her first baby this summer.
'I'm not the usual Hollywood star,' she says. 'The first thing I did when I arrived was to buy chapati flour and lentils. I'm proud of my heritage but it doesn't define me.'
I was with the ER cast and crew having dinner when George turned up. It was the best birthday present. He is brilliant - he loves telling stories and talks about everything from politics to movie-star tales, and you just listen awestruck. I kept thinking if I'd died that night I'd go with the biggest smile on my face. There was a story going around about him fancying me. I wish it was true.
First I agreed to do nude scenes - and then I found out that Ray was to play my lover. We met up beforehand to discuss the technical side but with those kind of scenes you just have to get on with it. It felt slightly surreal to be sprawled naked with him in the back of a car but we spent a lot of the time laughing. When we weren't saying our lines, we spent most of our naked down-time together talking about shepherd's pie. Ray's a connoisseur.
I always said I'd never do a nude scene but now I have. I know there will be a huge fuss when Compulsion comes out. It's partly because of the fact I'm Asian. People don't expect me to do that. I never expected myself to do that. I always said, 'No' and then finally I reached a point where I thought, 'It's now or never'. I'm much more confident in my body. I'm fit, I'm healthy and as long as it's not gratuitous it's OK with me. My mum will probably disapprove but I'll deal with that. I'm old enough now to make decisions like this.
I sat right behind him at the first screening of Bend It Like Beckham , but I couldn't see his face. I did notice he had nice manicured nails and he was concentrating on the screen intensely. He was with Victoria, who tapped her feet any time music came on. And then she turned to him and said: 'This is really good, isn't it?' After the film he came up and shook my hand and said I'd done really well.
I told her then I was never going to have an arranged marriage. No one has ever forced me to do anything against my will. So much was made about my culture after Bend It Like Beckham . People assumed that my family disapproved of what I did and I was escaping from my roots. That is not true. My parents came over from India and my mum spent her life working in a factory. I'm the first person in my family to even have an idea about doing something different like acting.
I knew no one in Hollywood and I was joining this huge dynasty of a show. For the first few weeks I was just bumbling around looking lost, which was OK because my character, Neela, was an intern and also had no idea what she was doing. Now I love it. I've been there six years and it has changed my life. I miss England but this is a great place to be. I love the healthy lifestyle, I love the food, I love the fact I can take off and go running in the hills with my iPod Nano for company.
My life was never supposed to happen to me. I was never supposed to be successful. I live in the Hollywood Hills and I work every day at Warner Brothers Studios in Los Angeles. It's the movie lot you see in films, the movie lot you dream about when you're a kid. I'm there. Me and the rest of the cast from ER have our own little bikes to ride round the lot. Sometimes I catch myself as I'm riding past massive A-list box-office names and I almost fall off my bike. There's a voice in my head that says this shouldn't be me.
You do all these procedures and you have to make it look as accurate as possible. There are so many amazing technical advisors on set you actually feel like you are doing real medical training. I am actually a doctor now as I have an honorary degree of Doctors of Letters from Leicester University. I still won't be performing surgery, though!
He has a very good body, that's all I can say. I love Hilary Swank's body too. To me she looked perfect in Million Dollar Baby . I think strong bodies are sexy bodies. I like my back and my arms because they are toned and strong-looking from a lot of running and Pilates. I hate the super-skinny look and I've never gone down that route.
