PARENTS MOAN OVER EFFORTS TO DOWNPLAY DAY

In keeping with the season's spirit, many school administrators and teachers wish Halloween would vanish.
In Utah, as in other parts of the country, elementary schools are questioning whether to continue the traditional celebration of ghouls and goodies. At least three elementary schools - two in Davis School District and one in Park City School District - have squashed the pumpkin-day pageantry.
But some schools in Jordan, Salt Lake and Murray school districts that have tried to ban - or at least modify - the Halloween parties have been spooked by the moans of upset parents.
"Principals and teachers hate it, the parents love it," said Jordan District spokesman Patty Dahl. She said Jordan schools that have tried to eliminate Halloween one year have ended up reinstating it the next year.
Disruption of the school day, gory or expensive costumes, too much sugar and complaints from parents who believe the day has satanic overtones are the reasons that principals give for downplaying Halloween.
Five years ago, Reading Elementary School, Centerville, scaled back its celebration, dropping the costumes and Halloween parade.
"Over the years, it had gotten bigger and more complicated and was taking more and more time out of the school day," said Reading Principal Maynard Whitesides.
Whitesides said he also had some students showing up in $200 or $300 costumes, while other Reading parents refused to let their children go to school on Halloween.
Whitesides said while his Halloween stance made him a goblin to a few parents, most supported him.
This Friday, in what has become their new Halloween tradition, Reading students - without costumes - will play games and eat refreshments during a 45-minute period allotted to Halloween activities at the end of the school day. "It's great. The kids really enjoy themselves," he said.
The scene will be similar at Bountiful Elementary School.
"We're not against parties, but we were looking at the nonacademic activities in the school day,"said Principal Ellen Stantus.
Stantus too reported good parental support. She sent home a note to the parents of Bountiful's 676 students. Eighty responded that the new, smaller Halloween celebration will be a "treat," while seven declared it a "trick."
Halloween didn't die so easily at Murray's Longview Elementary School.
Because the school is out Friday for teacher career-ladder day and a half day on Wednesday for teacher preparation, the principal and teachers wanted to limit Halloween to in-class activities Thursday. That meant no sixth-grade spook alley, a Longview tradition of more than 20 years; no costumes and no parade, which is usually attended by grandparents and preschool siblings in costumes.
The parents organized, taking a petition with more than 100 signatures to the Murray Board of Education. Longview students col-lected another 300 signatures among their classmates.
"I've been on the board nearly four years, and I've never gotten as much response about any other issue except year-round," said Murray school-board member Sherry Madsen, whose precinct includes Longview.
"The reason we were so upset," said parent D'Launa Rind-lis-bacher, "is that they didn't ask anybody. They just told us. It's a national holiday, and we felt really uncomfortable that our children wouldn't be celebrating. I can still remember what I did at school on Halloween."
The strong reaction surprised Principal Marilyn Prettyman. But she met with the teachers, and they sent a note to every home about possible Halloween activities. The questionnaire got an 86 percent return - the largest response of any questionnaire sent out by the school.
Rindlisbacher's son, Taylor, 9, will be parading as Peter Pan Thursday. In a parent-school compromise that seems to please both sides, the in-school celebration of a parade and classroom parties was shortened from two hours to one. And the sixth-graders will still scare their younger peers in a spook alley but it will be after school.
