Scientists Find Putting Pantyhose on Your Head Makes Your Mask Safer
After testing seven ways to make masks seal better around the face, researchers found that a pair of hosiery does the trick best.

I recently came across a selfie from April 2020 where I wore a “mask” that was just a bandana folded up and secured with hair ties to make a sad, limp origami face covering. It’s hard to believe this was the viral (lol) personal protective gear trick at the time, wrapping a linty old piece of cotton around my face to go buy and then wipe down my groceries. But back then, not even nurses could get their hands on a mask; these were just the ad hoc hacks we made up to stumble through a terrifying, confusing time.
In 2020, researchers from the University of Cambridge started testing out some of the ways people might adjust face masks to make them fit better on their faces. Their findings were finally released as a peer-reviewed study this week in the journal PLoS ONE.
A better seal around the edges of the masks means more protection from COVID-19, but most consumer-level surgical masks and KN95s leave gaps around the sides. The researchers tested seven different hacks that attempt to close the gaps, on surgical and KN95 masks:
All of these were better than nothing when tested by measuring concentrations of particles inside and around the mask. But the one that created the best seal was the pantyhose: they cut a section out of the thigh of some hose and yanked that over the wearer’s head and mask (except for one participant, who couldn’t get the hosiery over his head). The pressure of the stretchy fabric kept the mask on tight, but there was a catch: people really hated wearing it.

“The pantyhose caused high levels of discomfort as well as issues speaking and occasional obstruction of the eyes,” the researchers wrote.
“For most of the hacks, comfort was a big issue,” Eugenia O’Kelly, the paper’s first author, said in a press release. “The rubber bands for example, tended to put painful pressure on the ears and face, to the point where they hindered circulation to the ears. However, using an effective but uncomfortable hack may make good sense in some high-risk situations, where the discomfort is worth it for the added protection, but it would be harder to wear these hacks day in and day out.”
If someone can figure out how to combine the fetish market for crotch-scented masks with the improved safety of a better fit, they would have a real seller on their hands.

The CDC shared a July 2020 study that showed layering a sleeve of “sheer nylon hosiery material” over a mask may improve the wearer’s protection.

The U.S. government has not issued a mandate requiring Americans to wear nylon hosiery-type sleeves over their masks.
As more people around the United States get vaccinated against COVID-19, the federal government and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to emphasize the need for masks as a source of protection. In late Jan. 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden signed mandates stating that masks must be worn on all federal property, in airports, on many planes, trains, ships, and intercity buses.
The transportation mask mandate went into effect on Feb. 1, 2021. Presently, at least 38 states in the country have universal masking mandates in effect as well. Snopes readers asked us if the government was also imposing a requirement to wear pantyhose over masks for more protection.
We learned that while the government has enforced no such requirement, recent research has shown that wearing nylon hosiery material over masks has proven to be effective in protecting people.
The CDC shared a report on Feb. 10, 2021, that described new methods of mask-wearing. Titled “Maximizing Fit for Cloth and Medical Procedure Masks to Improve Performance and Reduce SARS-CoV-2 Transmission and Exposure, 2021,” the report cited research being conducted on how to make masks more effective in reducing the spread of COVID-19. The report stated:
Other studies found that knotting and tucking a medical procedure mask or placing a sleeve made of sheer nylon hosiery material around the neck and pulling it up over either a cloth or medical procedure mask (3,4) also significantly improved the wearer’s protection by fitting the mask more tightly to the wearer’s face and reducing edge gaps.
In the July 2020 study , researchers from Northeastern University found that adding an outer layer made from nylon stocking to a surgical mask significantly improved the fit of the mask. The nylon stocking layer also helped homemade cloth masks match or exceed the filtering capability of medical-grade surgical masks. Testing showed that a 3M surgical mask with an added nylon pantyhose layer went from blocking out 75% of small particles to 90% of particles.

Given that the CDC did cite studies indicating that sheer nylon hosiery-type sleeves may make masks more effective but has not announced a U.S. government mandate to wear such sleeves, we rate this claim as “Mostly False.”

I haven't gotten my grown-up juice this morning...
...cause I refuse to put pantyhose on my head....
...besides...it messes with the hair....
As a fun break from stuff, a fashion pic! I haven't taken one of these in a while, and they are simple and enjoyable to do.
In this one, I'm featuring Lux Aeterna's newish "The Harlow" silk gown and duster coat. The gown is very nice, but it's the duster that makes this outfit.
Before taking this one, naturally, I did some research, looking at pics of Jean Harlow, after whom this outfit has been named. The best photographer of Harlow, in my view, was George Hurrell, who used light and shadow beautifully. The Hurrell pic I latched on to almost immediately is a full-length portrait of the star in a long criss cross-topped white gown, and framed in an oval of light. You can see the pic here .
I liked the lighting a lot, but was not so keen on the pose, in which Harlow stands looking down, away from the camera, with her hands behind her back. I discussed it with my friend Maddy, who similarly noted that she looks somewhat submissive -- the standard "Starlet" pose of a woman who has been created by the Hollywood system, a consumable good for the cinema-going public. Maddy usefully compared the way that Harlow is packaged in this shot with photos of "strong" women actors, such as Lauren Bacall. So, I have deviated from the pose in the original shot (as well as some of the other details). I think the fascinator (which was actually somewhat out of fashion in Harlow's day) adds a touch of sophistication and power by subtly masking the eyes.
I used a combination of directional lighting (from two projector lights) and point lights to produce highlights. I wanted to suggest, as Hurrell does in his picture, that the light is almost emanating from the garment and model; I think that this in particular focuses attention upon the sheen and cut of the duster (which, as I said, is the stand-out piece in this ensemble). In addition to a bit of a frame from the stone monument within which I am standing, I've employed a leafy tree to add a bit of texturing to the otherwise dark background.

I honestly don’t know what to say anymore. But you did indeed read that headline correctly. If you’re worried about COVID, just throw a pair of pantyhose over your mask because apparently that’s the new safest thing to do. You’ll look like an unbelievable tool, but hey, the science people say that it’s safe.
These science people I just mentioned evidently ran some tests to find out how to make sure that as much protection happens on a mask as possible. After running several intense experiments with tape, rubber bands, knots, and some other things that actually make sense, they landed on the fact that a strip of a pantyhose would be the best to keep the mask tight to your face.
With all that discovered, though, the pantyhose-mask is apparently incredibly uncomfortable and hard to breathe in, so how effective is it really? Not to mention the fact that they probably smell like, well, you know…
