Pantyhose are, regardless of where you live, are essential because the transitional temperatures can make it a challenge to go completely bare-legged when wearing your favorite dress or skirt . And a good pair offers a little bit of extra warmth without fully covering your legs while giving you just the right amount of shape support. Because we think the legwear certainly deserves a spot in your undergarment drawer, we went on an investigation to find the absolute best pantyhose online—here's what we found.
Nordstrom , Target, and Amazon all have a wide selection of styles available, and whether you're looking for shapewear pantyhose or a pair that offers sheer, natural-looking coverage, these three retailers have it all. Below, we've rounded up some of the top-rated styles—along with their standout reviews—that won't immediately tear when you put them on, offer just the right amount of control, and are, most importantly, comfortable. Read on to see and shop the best pantyhose online.
"I ordered these Gloss Control Top Pantyhose when I became frustrated with some much more expensive pantyhose that lost shape within an hour of putting them on. These retain shape, fit really well, and are quite comfortable for control top pantyhose. I have them in black and bronze and the gloss is subtle and quite attractive. I whole heartily recommend!" —Nordstrom reviewer
"They last forever– I can wear them out in the freezing cold and they make my legs look GORGEOUS! So, so pretty on!" —Nordstrom reviewer
"Best pantyhose! Smooths every bump, but still very comfortable!" —Nordstrom reviewer
"This light opaque tight is great if you prefer a bit of coverage for work year-round. The control top is moderate but is good enough for a long day at work." —Nordstrom reviewer
"These are by far the best nylons I've ever purchased! They have phenomenal support without messy seams or control top, making them perfect for underneath any outfit. The lace top is flattering yet firm." —Nordstrom reviewer
"Love these pantyhose! rarely ever wear pantyhose because of the fit and feel, but these were very lightweight yet durable." —Nordstrom reviewer
"These are perfect! They are light enough to not be hot during summer and strong enough to do their job. They keep you nice and smooth under clingy dresses and jumpers without any lines. I will definitely be buying them in black." —Nordstrom reviewer
"These pantyhose are perfect! The shine and sheen are perfect. Head-turning!" —Target reviewer
"I like this control top hose product. I was able to get smoothing coverage without a lot of 'muffin top' from the band. They did not run and were silky and comfortable on my legs, which is important because I run around on my feet all day." —Target reviewer
"I thought these would be like old-school pantyhose or something, but it turns out they fit well and were super comfortable! I bought four packs!" —Target reviewer
"These tights feel like silk! The sheer and smooth fabric is barely noticeable against the skin and looks terrific. And the design helps your legs look sexy!" —Target reviewer
"I always have several pairs on hand. They are the only ones I buy." —Target reviewer
"Absolutely my favorite nylons. Excellent. Hold up in the wash well. Fit amazing if you like a nice supportive feel." —Amazon reviewer
"These are perfect—worn them for years—comfortable and elegant." —Amazon reviewer
"Having just discovered these, they are my new favorite pantyhose and my new go-to pair. They're very very sheer and simply dazzling in appearance and strength. No snags, holes, or sagging either." —Amazon reviewer
"'These were as matte as they come and didn't snag once, even puttering around the house barefoot and fighting the cat." —Amazon reviewer
"It is really really good! I used it the day that it arrived and really loved the support and the silky feeling. No doubts that I'll buy it again when I'm done with the six that came in the package." —Amazon reviewer
"True to the description they're very comfortable without the compressed feeling of tightness or the slacking of wimpy nylon hose. They're the best I’ve come across by far!" —Amazon reviewer
And now for the fun part—these are the skirts and dresses I'm pairing them with…

Wearing pantyhose is a personal choice that many women make every day. Pantyhose can be worn for many reasons such as comfort, fashion, and protection from the cold weather.
Some of the benefits of wearing pantyhose are: they keep your legs warm in winter, provide support to your feet and lower back, help prevent chafing on your thighs when walking or sitting, protect against friction burns (especially during pregnancy), prevents irritation from hosiery seams rubbing together underneath clothing- preventing “chicken skin” bumps on the backs of your legs, gives you a smooth line under skirts and dresses without showing any lines or lumps in clothing.
Here are the top reasons to wear pantyhose
Wearing a pantyhose is an excellent way to keep your legs warm in winter because the material retains heat and distributes it evenly around your body. You can also wear a pair of tights, but they don’t keep you as warm as pantyhose because of the open areas between the toes and ankles.
Pantyhose are also great for keeping your feet warm because they prevent the air from entering between your toes, and especially if worn with toe socks you will never lose that feeling of warmness around your ankles and toes.
Wearing pantyhose under jeans is an excellent way to prevent your legs from getting cold and to feel warm during the day.
Pantyhose are designed to help you stay cool and dry during the summer months. Not only do they keep your legs looking great and feeling good but they also help reduce sweating which is a big problem for many people in hot weather.
They are made of thin nylon (spandex) which helps move the moisture away from your skin and help keep you feeling cool.
They basically reduce the amount of water that can be held by your skin. Your body then has to work extra hard to produce sweat as a way for your body to rid itself of excess heat and this, in turn, causes sweating.
Studies have found that wearing pantyhose can reduce overall sweating by up to 40% which is a real bonus in hot weather.
Pantyhose reduces friction on your legs because they are made out of fine fibers that act as a shield against rubbing and herding of skin.
During a long walk, there is the constant rubbing of your skin against your clothes and shoes causes you to blister and chafe. Also, it’s recommended to pair them with a comfortable pair of shoes.
Pantyhose give you a sleek, professional look that’s appropriate for work and going to formal events. You can wear them under your business suit or dress pants, this will give you a polished appearance underneath the outfit.
In the office try wearing black pantyhose with a black skirt or pantsuit. You can also wear nude ones under a light-colored suit jacket and dark pants to add contrast.
What you’re wearing on your bottom half will make a statement about how you want others to perceive you, so make sure it’s smart and fashionable.
At a cocktail party, you can wear them with a short skirt and a formal blouse. This is similar to the idea of wearing black pantyhose with a suit jacket; it gives you an overall polished look.
Pantyhose prevents your feet from sweating because they are made of cotton and nylon. They are very comfortable to wear and they give your feet much-needed ventilation especially when you have to stand for long periods of time.
When you wear pantyhose, it also prevents your feet from getting dirty because they are flexible and easy to wash. Be aware that cotton is a mild absorber of sweat.
They prevent feet from getting smelly because they’re made from cotton (wool), nylon, or polyester.
Pantyhose makes your legs look smooth, shaven, and very sexy because of the see-through appearance of nylons. they make your legs feel silky and soft.
Also, they give you the illusion of longer, leaner legs, well defined and it might show that you worked out at the gym.
They provide support for your stomach muscles and backside because they make you stand taller and more upright which allows for a better posture and core stabilization.
They also are great under sheer dresses to help smooth out the stomach area and give you a more streamlined look all around. They are also called “shapewear pantyhose”
Pantyhose can hide panty lines pretty well so you can wear clothes that show off your legs but not look like you wore shorts or underwear.
The stretchy material makes them feel like a second skin, they don’t leave lines and look smooth under most summer clothes.
However, you can’t go too crazy with the tightness of your clothes. If they’re so tight that they show the panty line through then try something else.
Pantyhose never will go out of style, but they are a matter of taste. Some women prefer to wear them while others do not like wearing them.
They are sexy, soft, and comfortable even if they are fashionable. That’s why celebrities prefer to wear them and this is the main reason why you should too!
They also have different shapes and sizes. This means they can differ between brands, so you should choose a pair that matches the shape of your body type. If you have flat feet with wide ankles, you may find it hard to get comfortable wearing pantyhose.
Pantyhose can be matched with different types of clothing . In cold winter, you can wear tight pants and a coat together with pantyhose.
You should also match some different types of shoes with them. The below are some different combination that is suitable for the different types of people to wear in cold winter or hot summer.
Pantyhose prevent varicose veins because they help blood flow right back up the veins and not have a chance to pool, thrombose or break away from the vein wall.
Pantyhoses are a great way to keep your legs looking sleek and feeling comfortable. They can be worn with skirts, pants, or dresses! You might not need them every day but they’re perfect for work attire in the winter months.
Keep these tips in mind when you shop for pantyhose next time so that you’ll always have the best pair on hand. To get started choosing which pantyhose type is right for you, check out this article !

They’re a staple in my wardrobe, and I’m sure many other women’s wardrobes too. My research-loving brain sent me down a rabbit hole to find out why pantyhose have remained such a popular item of clothing in our wardrobes for so many decades .
Pantyhose are worn for many reasons, which include:
Before we head into all the reasons to wear pantyhose, let’s take a brief look at the history of hosiery.
The term hosiery came from the Anglo-Saxon word “hosen”, which means covering. European noblemen wore these early versions of pantyhose in the 15 th and 16 th centuries to make for easier horseback riding.
The first recorded woman to wear stockings was Queen Elizabeth I. She was given her first pair of knitted silk stockings in 1560, and she loved the softness and comfort of the accessory . These early versions were made of silk and wool and had to be held up by garters or custom-made for the wearer.
Throughout the next few centuries, hosiery in some form or another was worn by women for modesty, warmth, and protection. Dresses were long , and stockings were hidden under clothing .
In the early part of the 20 th century, hemlines became shorter, and hosiery increased in popularity to cover bare legs. The typical 1920’s stocking came to just above the knee and was held up by a garter or a suspension belt . Women started to embrace fishnet and embellished hosiery as a style and freedom statement.
With the 1930s came the invention of nylon which changed the hosiery world. Nylon was cheaper, and its elasticity allowed for hosiery to fit women of all shapes and sizes.
With World War II, nylon was in short supply, and women began to use self-tanner and similar options to create the illusion of stockings.
During the next two decades, as hemlines continued to rise, pantyhose were developed. Pantyhose are a single garment consisting of two legs, a gusset, and a waistband. Back then, all nylon hosiery were called “pantyhose.” Nowadays, the term “pantyhose” refers to the style and not the material .
In the late 1960s, the first “hold-ups” were developed – self-supporting stockings that were an alternative to pantyhose, garters, and suspenders.
These days, hosiery options are endless.
Let’s hone in on pantyhose and all the good reasons why we wear them.
Pantyhose allow us to wear our skirts and dresses throughout the year, even in the coldest winter months. Their material retains heat and distributes it around your body. The closed toes keep your feet warm because they prevent air from entering between your toes.
Pantyhose are also a great alternative to tights because your ankles are protected. Wearing a pair of pantyhose under your pants and jeans is also a great option to keep your legs warm throughout the day.
We might wonder how something that keeps you warm in winter also keeps you cool and dry in summer? The reason why pantyhose keep you cool is that they reduce sweating. Studies have shown that wearing pantyhose can reduce sweating by up to 40%. They are mostly made from thin nylon, which wicks moisture away from the skin and helps you stay cool.
Similar to how pantyhose keep your legs cool by reducing sweating, they do the same to your feet. Yay for no smelly feet.
Possibly the worst thing about wearing dresses and skirts with bare legs is the possibility of rubbing and chafing between your legs. By reducing the friction, pantyhose will prevent painful thigh rub. For the same reason, they can also protect your feet from blisters caused by your shoes .
A tip if you do want to wear a dress and be bare-legged on a hot summer day – wear a pair of tight boy shorts or bicycle-style short pants!.
Pantyhose are perfect for a day at the office or a formal event to finish off an outfit. Nothing looks quite as smart as a black pencil skirt with a pair of black pantyhose. And for a cocktail party, nothing is as perfect as a little black dress with black pantyhose.
They’re a great confidence booster because they make your legs look longer and shapelier, and their sheerness can be very alluring.
To add to the confidence factor, a pair of shapewear pantyhose can help hide any lumps and bumps on your hips, thighs, and stomach, especially under body con dresses.
Because they’re tight enough to feel like a second skin, they can hide panty lines pretty well under fitted outfits.
Pantyhose have been around for hundreds of years. They are timeless and somehow have never gone out of style. Fashion has dictated variations over the years – from fishnets to seamed to patterned and in every color under the sun. One way or another, there is always a fashionable option to wear if you’re a fan. They can finish an outfit and are a fun way to add visual interest.
Support pantyhose help to prevent varicose veins because they help your veins work correctly and avoid bad circulation and clots.
Pantyhose have been around for hundreds of years in one form or another, and they have a fascinating history. Their timelessness means they’re a staple item of clothing in many of our wardrobes. We wear them for a wide variety of reasons, both practical and style. Do you love pantyhose, and if so, what is your favorite reason for wearing them?
