Garterbelt : Daten City, a town flinging to the threshold between heaven and hell. With a piece of its human inhabitants, it's regularly threatened by foul-tempered, evil spirits. Evil creatures called Ghosts have begun attacking Daten City, a city located on the border of Heaven and Earth. In response, Heaven sends down two less-than-heavenly angels (who also happen to be sisters) to stop the Ghosts: Panty, an incredibly promiscuous blonde who can turn her panties into guns, and Stocking, a goth girl with an eternal craving for sweets who can turn her stockings into swords. Aided by their dog Chuck and guided by Father Garterbelt, a black priest with a titanic afro and a variety of sexual fetishes, the sisters fight ghosts in incredibly sexy, exciting, and just plain old weird ways.
In other words, you're watching a typical Studio Gainax anime.
With its strange Thick-Line Animation -style reminiscent of The Powerpuff Girls and other early 2000s Cartoon Network shows note save for a handful of scenes rendered in a "regular" anime style and a humor-style that wouldn't be out of place among any [adult swim] programming, 2010's Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt is probably one of the weirdest series Studio Gainax has ever produced. A number of fans consider it even weirder than FLCL , which really says a lot, though others will say it sits on par with the batshit insane Dead Leaves . Each episode is done in the Two Shorts format, save for the final two, double-length episodes.
After its obligatory Gainax Ending , the series teased a second season, but director Hiroyuki Imaishi left Gainax in 2011 to form Studio Trigger . The series has remained in limbo ever since. On November 25, 2016, Gainax's Kansai branch teased something new for the series , confirming only that it won't be a pachinko, pachislot, or "social network" game . note Which turned out to be a new set of merchandise and a cafe event , but they also mentioned a "new material" which won't be those again. In January 2017, however, Imaishi and other ex-Gainax staff released a doujin titled Geek Boy Homecoming that serves as a sequel to both Panty & Stocking and another series . Whether or not this hints at something big has yet to be seen.
Funimation licensed the series for North America and released it both on DVD and Blu-ray. You can also watch it in its entirety on FUNimation's own website .
The series has received two different manga adaptations: Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt , which is written by Studio Gainax and illustrated by Tagro and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt in Manga Strip , which is written and illustrated by Imaishi.

Compare The Powerpuff Girls , which has a similar episode structure and art style though this show is much more ruder and not for kids , South Park , due to being an incredibly rude and vulgar cartoon series that references other forms of media, Sausage Party and Conker's Bad Fur Day , due to both having brightly colored animated worlds in a cartoonish universe while having Black Comedy , Kill la Kill which is made by the same people while both are parodies of the Magical Girl genre, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica which has a similar storyline only Played for Drama .
