A man nicknamed the “Panty Bandit” was sentenced to two years and eight months in jail in connection with a series of adult and lingerie store burglaries, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday.
Carlos Oliva, 35, of Canoga Park, pleaded no contest on Jan. 6 to three felony counts of second-degree commercial burglary. He was arrested on Sept. 29.
He agreed to pay restitution to the victims of nine burglary and attempted burglaries that were dismissed as part of a plea deal, officials said.
Oliva burglarized or tried to burglarize 12 stores in western San Fernando Valley between January and September of last year.
Prosecutors said many of the incidents occurred on the same dates against different stores, while some victims were hit more than once during the period.
Oliva apparently always stole women’s panties or adult DVDs, resulting in thousands of dollars lost by the victims, officials said.
The case was investigated by the Los Angeles Police Department.

A 35-year-old Canoga Park man with a yen for lingerie and adult DVDs was sentenced to more than two years in prison Friday following a string of break-ins that earned him the waggish sobriquet of “panty bandit.”
Carlos Oliva was sentenced to two years and eight months in custody for breaking into several adult or lingerie stores in the San Fernando Valley and fleeing each with thousands of dollars worth of lingerie and DVDs, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office.
Oliva had pleaded no contest Jan. 6 to three felony counts of second-degree commercial burglary, prosecutors said. As part of that plea, the defendant agreed to pay restitution to nine burglary victims, prosecutors said.
A Los Angeles police sergeant caught Oliva in the act Sept. 29, authorities say.
According to police, Oliva had broken into Excitement, an adult store on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills. When the store’s burglary alarm went off, the sergeant found him outside the premises, police said.
The business was one of at least 11 lingerie stores burglarized from January to September 2016, police said. Many of the break-ins were committed on the same dates, and some stores were burglarized more than once, prosecutors said.
Oliva was probably reselling the stolen goods, said LAPD Det. Merrill Dunn.
“His penchant for breaking into lingerie shops told us this was a matter of organized retail crime,” Dunn said, “which means he’s reselling the merchandise to fences or shipping it out of the country.”

A so-called "panty bandit" is behind bars after allegedly breaking into nearly a dozen lingerie stores in the San Fernando Valley.
SAN FERNANDO, Calif. (KABC) -- A so-called "panty bandit" is behind bars after allegedly breaking into nearly a dozen lingerie stores in the San Fernando Valley.
Police said 35-year-old Carlos Olivas was caught on surveillance video and arrested on Thursday.
"The individual we arrested yesterday, the 29th, we believe is responsible for 16 to 18 commercial burglaries throughout the San Fernando Valley," said Det. Merrill Dunn of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Olivas, also known as the "panty bandit," was detained after police caught him trying to pry open the back door of a store.
In total, police estimate the burglaries which - started in January - led to more than $10,000 in losses, not including the damage caused by the force entry.
"It just is a maddening thing," said Beth Higgins of Intimate Image. "You work so hard all your life for all this money and for someone just to come in and disrespect and take off with it - it's very maddening," she said.
Higgins is the owner of Intimate Image, one of the lingerie boutiques broken into twice. Her store specializes in helping cancer patients who have had a mastectomy find a custom bra.
"We took it all very personal because these are items that we may not be able to get again," she said. "They fit, there is a special need for that fitting."
Police say in the last three years, they have seen a spike in retail crime in the San Fernando Valley.
Property crime in the Topanga area is up 8 percent and nearly 20 percent since 2014.
"And that just takes a hit on us, the consumers," Dunn said. "Skyrocket prices and also it's a burden on the store owners themselves."
Olivas was booked for commercial burglary. His bail was set at $200,000, and he will be facing a judge on Monday.
