So I’m an eighteen year old female and this is extremely embarrassing for me. I want to make this short, so on Monday, while I was with some friends in the mall, one of them (18 M) decided to pull down my pants and lift my shirt up in quick secession. The only thing is that he also accidentally pulled down my underwear and I was r wearing a bra that day. He apologized profusely and even shielded me as I put my clothes back on. However, it was witnessed by an old lady and a few kids, so the security took me back after I was apparently reported. I got banned from the mall and the police came to give me a citation for public indecency. The female officer was extremely understanding, but she said that the charge would still apply to me until I pressed charges against my friend as it would be assumed my fault. I’ve forgiven my friend and i don’t want to send him to jail. If I pressed charges, it would be sexual assault. I have no clue what to do. Is there any way that I could get the charges dropped without having to press charges?
Get a lawyer if at all possible. Advise your friend to get a lawyer too.
Don't talk to cops or anyone else about it until you get a lawyer to advise you. Also, it may sound cold, but you need to protect yourself first. Your "friend" made a stupid mistake, but he's still the one who did the wrong thing. His actions, so if there are consequences he should be the one to face them. Sounds like the cops might be after "friend" for whatever reason, and looking for anything that might stick. If that's happening, they won't go easy on you if they think you can be cracked and turned into a tool for them to use. The charges could be damaging to either of you, and you really need a lawyer to go through risks/benefits/options with you.

"Pressing charges" is not something that civilians have the power to do. If the prosecutor wants to prosecute your friend, then they will whether or not you want them to. Either way, that decision has nothing to do with whether or not you committed a crime.
The key phrase here is "knowingly or intentionally." It can be a crime to appear in a public place in a state of nudity, but only if you do it knowingly or intentionally. That's not what happened in your case, and it is vanishingly unlikely that any prosecutor would try to convict you on these facts.
Very likely, the police officer you spoke with simply didn't know what she was talking about. There's a slim chance that someone in the prosecutor's office is attempting to pressure you into testifying against your friend. Either way, this is very unlikely to be a problem for you. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're actually charged with a crime, or if you get a call from someone at prosecutor's office.
You need a lawyer. If convicted you could have to register as a sex offender. This will impact everything you do for your entire adulthood. You may not want to turn in your friend, but it’s better than you getting convicted of a sex crime.
The station can push it as far as they want but it's not up to them what goes to court. I highly doubt any DA is going to push indecency charges against a victim of a crime.
In short no those charges will stick, get a lawyer and be prepared. Besides that your friend sexual assaulted you in a mall in front of strangers, and you just want to forgive him?

No you don't send anyone to jail, the judge does when someone breaks the law like he did when he decided to sexual assault someone in public. Don't let your "friend" gaslight you. You are not to blame for this situation, he and only HE is.
