The cause of most uncomfortable sex can sometimes be easy to figure out and easy to treat.
Fortunately, the cause of uncomfortable sex can sometimes be easy to figure out, says Shari Lawson, M.D. , division director, General Obstetrics and Gynecology, at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. “Painful sex can be caused by an infection or a hormonal imbalance,” she says. The good news is that these things are easy to treat.
So don’t take it lying down — there are ways to make sex something to enjoy again.
Usually, women with painful sex have a clear-cut reason for experiencing discomfort, Lawson says. Common reasons for painful sex include:
Your doctor will discuss your sexual history and perform an internal exam. If your doctor suspects a yeast infection or bacterial vaginosis (an infection of the vagina caused by bacteria), he or she will take a sample of your vaginal discharge and look at it under a microscope for signs of infection. Doctors also check the pH levels in your vagina. A too-high pH points to vaginosis, but a yeast infection usually has a normal vaginal pH.
Your doctor will also look at your vagina and your vulva, the exterior of your genitals, for other lesions that might contribute to pain. You might also be screened for STDs through a urine test or vaginal swab.
Depending on the cause, common treatment options for painful sex include:
If you have suffered sexual abuse or trauma, your doctor might refer you to a psychiatrist, therapist and pelvic floor physical therapist, who can work to release tense and tight pelvic muscles.
“I can’t emphasize enough that patients with a previous history of sexual abuse might experience painful sex due to psychosocial causes — but it can be addressed with help,” Lawson says.
So put your worries to bed: No matter what the reason for painful sex, it’s usually temporary and can almost always be treated.

7 Things You Should Always Discuss with Your Gynecologist

Intercourse pain, or dyspareunia, can cause problems in a couple's sexual relationship. In addition to the physically painful sex , there is also the possibility of negative emotional effects. So the problem should be addressed as soon as it arises.
In many cases, a woman can experience painful sex if there is not sufficient vaginal lubrication. When this occurs, the pain can be resolved if the female becomes more relaxed, if the amount of foreplay is increased, or if the couple uses a sexual lubricant.
In some cases, a woman can experience painful sex if one of the following conditions is present:
Vulvodynia . This refers to chronic pain that affects a woman's external sexual organs -- collectively called the vulva -- including the labia, clitoris, and vaginal opening. It may occur in just one spot, or affect different areas from one time to the next. Doctors don't know what causes it, and there is no known cure. But self-care combined with medical treatments can help bring relief.
Some treatments for painful sex in women do not require medical treatment. For example, painful sex after pregnancy can be addressed by waiting at least six weeks after childbirth before having intercourse. Make sure to practice gentleness and patience. In cases in which there is vaginal dryness or a lack of lubrication, try water-based lubricants.
Some treatments for female sexual pain do require a doctor's care. If vaginal dryness is due to menopause, ask a health care professional about estrogen creams or other prescription medications. Other causes of painful intercourse may also require prescription drugs .
For cases of sexual pain in which there is no underlying medical cause, sexual therapy might be helpful. Some individuals may need to resolve issues such as guilt, inner conflicts regarding sex , or feelings regarding past abuse.
Call a doctor if there are symptoms such as bleeding, genital lesions, irregular periods , vaginal discharge , or involuntary vaginal muscle contractions . Ask for a referral to a certified sex counselor if there are other concerns that need to be addressed.

While there may be over a thousand positions that have been described in literature, when it comes to our bedrooms, there are only four to five we end up doing, if not just one or two. So, a survey was conducted in the US and Europe to ask people which position made them anxious in the bedroom. Here's what they had to say.
THE MOST STRESSFUL POSITION: When the answers were compiled, it was found that the most dreadful position for both the genders was a standing 69. Almost 53 per cent of women participants and 43 per cent of men participants ranked that one as the most dreadful.
THE SECOND MOST DREADFUL POSITION: The position that ranked number two in the survey was trying anal. However, it was dreaded more by women than by men. While about 55 per cent of women said they were uncomfortable trying anal, only 30 per cent men said so.
THE POSITION THAT WOMEN DREAD BUT MEN LOVE: Anal seems not so dreadful to the beings from Mars. You would be surprised to know that when women dread it, around 88 per cent of men ranked it as their top preferred position!
SOME TIPS: Whatever position you love or dread, you can make it more pleasant by adding lube. Especially when it comes to positions that a partner likes while the other detests, lube can make things smoother in more ways than one. However, never try anything which you still may not find comfortable.
