At around 8:30 PM, a group of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militants, armed with AK-47s and grenades, stormed the Qazigund-Pahalgam road, targeting a cluster of tourist huts and a nearby CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) camp. Their objective? Massacre.

The militants, dressed in black combat gear, moved with chilling precision. They first opened fire on a group of pilgrims returning from the Amarnath Yatra, a sacred Hindu pilgrimage. Bullets ripped through the night—men, women, and children fell where they stood.

Then, they turned their guns on the CRPF outpost. A fierce gun battle erupted, but the militants had the advantage of surprise. By the time reinforcements arrived, nine people were dead, including four civilians and five security personnel. The attackers vanished into the dense forests, leaving behind a trail of shell casings and horror.

The Aftermath: A Valley in Mourning

The Indian government blamed Pakistan-backed Lashkar-e-Taiba, a terrorist group notorious for its brutal attacks in Kashmir. The massacre sent shockwaves across the nation, further escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

Survivors recounted bloodcurdling screams, the smell of gunpowder, and the sight of bodies strewn across the road. One witness, a local shopkeeper, said: 'They shot without warning. One moment people were laughing, the next—gone.'

Indian security forces launched Operation Sarp Vinash, a massive counter-terrorism sweep in the region. Over the next few months, dozens of militants were killed, but the masterminds behind the Pahalgam attack remained elusive.
