Forty-two is no age at all for a model these days, but life could be ending rather than beginning at 40 for Britain’s most famous glamour modeling institution. Rupert Murdoch, responding to a tweet this week suggesting that the Sun’s Page 3 is “so last century”, replied: “You may be right, don’t know but considering.”
This isn’t the first time Rupe has considered dumping the double-Ds. In a 1994 interview with India Today magazine, Murdoch acknowledged that the idea might have run its course, although in 1999 he told shareholders that an experiment with bikinis would stop if it caused a drop in Sun sales.
But if the end is now indeed nigh for this national treasure, it’s worth reflecting on a few milestones along its shapely and occasionally rocky journey…
On 17 November Swedish model and “Penthouse Pet” Ulla Lindstrom became the first Page Three Girl. “She’s just the sort of gorgeous blonde you hope will smile at you on a dull, back-to-work Monday morning,” cooed the accompanying pithy pen portrait. “This Swedish charmer has a nice line in brains, too. At present she’s studying to become a systems analyst for computers in Stockholm.”
The pin-up spot was the brainchild of the modern Sun’s first editor, Larry Lamb. “I helped make page three part of the language,” he wrote later. “In many ways now I wish I hadn’t.”
Exactly a year after the paper’s re-launch, Stephanie Rahn from Germany, became the first topless talent to grace the paper’s pages. Not many of them to the pound – or the Deutschmark.
The year of the heat wave saw the arrival of another “scorcher”, as Linda Lusardi began her long relationship with the paper. In 2005 she was voted Best Page 3 Girl Ever. Three years later she won Celebrity Come Dine With Me in 2008, beating fellow topless trouper Abi Titmuss.
The Lambrettas were so pleased with this sub-Jam effort that they released it as a single. Whereupon the Sun slapped a court injunction on it, claiming ownership of the phrase “page three”.
Sam Fox (seen here with Lusardi) was named Page Three Girl of the Year for three consecutive years between 1984 and 1986, after which she retired from modeling. Ten years later, she made a brief comeback for Page Three’s 25th anniversary. In 2009 she announced that she wanted Motorhead’s Lemmy to give her away at the civil partnership service she was planning with her manager Myra Stratton. ( More here .)
Maria Whittaker stepped into the large gaps left by Sam, before moving on to become the face of Barbarian.

No, bubbly Brummie Clare Short did not get her top off in the Sun. Instead, the “spoilsport” Labour MP raised the issue of Page 3 in parliament, suggesting a ban on nude pictures in all newspapers. When the Sun switched its support to her party in 1997 she responded: “They think it’s normal and acceptable to carry daily pictures of half-naked women, which is still revolting – but I’m still glad they’re supporting us.” Short renewed her campaign in 2004, prompting the paper to superimpose her face on a Page Three model’s body and brand her “fat and jealous”.
At the end of the 20th Century the Sun introduced a policy of only featuring models with natural breasts, thus ruling out models such as Jordan and Jodi Marsh. No great loss to either. Katie Price is now a leading author and Jodie Marsh is a bodybuilder of a different kind.

Beverley Goodway, the smudger who snapped Rahn, stayed on the job for a further 24 years until his retirement on 2003. “I must be one of the few men who can honestly say I’ve seen more naked girls in the flesh than I have had hot dinners,” he reflected. “ It’s my claim to fame and it has been a pleasure. There’s not a single bloke alive who won’t swap places with me.”
Writer and actress Lucy-Anne Holmes donned a suitably 1980s-style protest T-shirt to launch her No More Page Three campaign. Fat and jealous? Hardly.

Page 3 models have driven fans wild with desire since the birth of the tabloid dare to bare genre back in the 1970s.
Many glamour models such as Kelly Brook , Katie Price and Samantha Fox were catapulted to international superstardom thanks to their naughty newspaper snaps.
Whether it's sizzling topless exposés, sultry swimsuit shots or head-turning lingerie photographs, there has certainly been an array of jaw-dropping photos over the decades.
To mark 50 years since Page 3 was first introduced, Channel 4 is airing a special documentary about the women who graced the papers.
The one-off show called Page Three: The Naked Truth, which airs tonight, sees the documentary makers speak to various former glamour models, who first found fame posing topless for the tabloids.
Daily Star Online has taken a look back at some of Page 3's biggest pin-ups.
Blonde bombshell Melinda Messenger, now aged 49, first got her big modelling break back in 1997, posing in Daily Star.
She was quickly propelled into the spotlight as a popular Page 3 girl and modelled in a vast array of sexy photoshoots, showing off more than just her lingerie.
Melinda posed for her first ever topless shoot that same year, cementing her place as one of the nation's biggest pin-ups.
Since leaving her glitzy modelling days behind her, Melinda has enjoyed a successful career as a television presenter, hosting the magazine programme Live from Studio Five and reality programme Cowboy Builders, as well as gameshow Fort Boyard.
Samantha Fox is certainly one of the most recognisable and memorable Page 3 stars, with the smoking-hot star first appearing as a topless model on Page 3 of The Sun.
She continued as a glamour model for Page 3 until 1986, and is said to have been one of the most photographed British women of the 1980s.
Fox isn't just known for her incredible modelling snaps, but also her music, after also finding fame as a singer.
In 1986, she retired from Page 3 modelling and focussed on her pop star career.
She made a one-off appearance in The Sun back in 1995 to promote Page 3's 25th anniversary.
Sam has also had a few TV gigs, including on shows such as Celebrity Wife Swap and I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
Kelly is one of the world's most recognised sex symbols, with the media personality first getting her big break as a glamour model.
After working on a range of advertising campaigns for the likes of Renault Mégane and Walkers crisps, the brunette bombshell caught the attention of Daily Star, who were keen to employ her as a Page 3 girl.
Her sizzling snaps soon began appearing in other magazines, and she became a hugely popular glamour model, topping the 'FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World' list in 2005.
Since her glamour modelling days, Kelly has tried her hand at acting, writing and television presenting. She's known for appearing as a team captain regularly on Celebrity Juice and starring in hit TV sitcom One Big Happy.
Katie Price is currently most well-known for being a reality star, but she first shot to stardom as a glamour model back in the 1990s.
She posed in endless Page 3 modelling shoots for Daily Star and The Sun.
In 2004, her appearance on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! further expanded her fanbase, as her romance with now ex-husband Peter Andre first blossomed before viewers' eyes.
After that, her modelling career began to take a backseat as she became more known in the television world. She's now a media personality while focussing on being a mother to her five children.
Modelling siren Lucy first appeared topless in Nuts magazine back in 2007, and she then found stardom as a Page 3 babe for Daily Star.
Australian magazine Ralph declared she had the "Best Breasts in the World" in 2007, with the brunette beauty also appearing on FHM's list of the "100 Sexiest Women in the World" on numerous occasions.
She's now an actress and television personality, and appeared on Celebrity Big Brother in 2009.
Former Miss England 2004 and Miss Great Britain 2006, Danielle Lloyd has without a doubt made her mark with her red-hot modelling snaps over the years.
She first rose to prominence when she was stripped of her Miss Great Britain title after posing nude in the December 2006 edition of Playboy. Her title was reinstated in 2010.
Fans were driven wild as she worked her magic on numerous occasions in front of the camera.
She is also known as a WAG as well as a model, previously dating Teddy Sheringham and she was married to Jamie O'Hara.
Johnson was the first glamour model to pose topless for the Daily Mirror, with the sizzling blonde bombshell first working as a Page 3 star back in 1975.
Before her famous tabloid modelling days, Jilly was in the girl group Blonde on Blonde with Nina Carter, from 1970 until 1980.
Now aged 66, Jilly is still a working model. Back in 2016, at aged 62, she modelled in a bikini body confidence campaign for JD Williams.
Media personality and social media star Rhian Sugden first found fame posing topless in The Sun, with the blonde siren being catapulted to stardom as a Page 3 legend.
While she's hung up her glamour modelling hat, she still regularly drives her social media fans wild with sultry lingerie and bikini selfies.
The former Celebrity Big Brother contestant is married to Coronation Street star Oliver Mellor, and the star was recently praised for opening up about the couple's IVF journey.
She was famously involved in a 'sexting scandal' with married TV star Vernon Kay. Rhian said the controversy "ruined her career".
Back in the day, it was practically impossible to open a newspaper without seeing Page 3 icon Jo Guest posing up a storm.
She was a glamour model favourite in the media world, and regularly flaunted her assets to readers in steamy lingerie and topless exposés.
Sizzling siren Jo also appeared in a weekly "agony babe" advice column in the Daily Star.
In recent years, Jo has opened up about her battle with Fibromyalgia.
Brunette babe Maria Whittaker has certainly taken some memorable sexy shots during her time as a Page 3 girl for The Sun.
She became one of the most celebrated topless models of the 1980s, dropping jaws with her fabulous curves.
Maria was certainly one of the most popular models to appear in the iconic feature and was even named Page 3 Girl Of The Year in 1989, before also finding fame as a singer.

Nearly four decades since she first went topless for Britain’s favourite newspaper, Linda declares: 'I still look sexy at 60 and my husband thinks so too — he reckons I’m the best thing since sliced bread.'
MOST women mark their 60th birthday with a party for friends and family – but Page Three legend Linda Lusardi is not most women.
So she has decided to celebrate the milestone by peeling off her clothes for The Sun once more.
Nearly four decades since she first went topless for Britain’s favourite newspaper, Linda declares: “I still look sexy at 60 and my husband thinks so too — he reckons I’m the best thing since sliced bread.”
The Londoner became a household name in the Seventies and Eighties, and in 2005 was voted the UK’s most popular Page Three girl ever.
She says being so famous for her figure used to make her feel awkward about her “lumps and bumps” as she aged — but no longer.
The mum-of-two says: “Up until I turned 50 I was wary of the fact I had cellulite and flabby bits here and there. I’d hide it all away.
“Now I’m turning 60, I think, ‘I know I’ve got those things but I still look all right for 60’, so I don’t care any more.
“I will wear a bikini in the garden and on holiday but won’t go topless on the beach — just in case someone recognises me and takes a picture!”
She reckons other women her age, however, should go for it, announcing: “Why should life be tailored to age?
“If you feel like going on a topless beach when you’re 60, why shouldn’t you?”
“I’m really proud to be turning 60 next month and I get lots of nice comments. I don’t try to hide my age.”
Linda still has the 24in waist she had when she was discovered by a modelling scout at a bus stop aged 18, and says the only place she ever puts on weight is on her “boobs and bum”.
She says: “It makes it look like I’m tied up in the middle”.
In fact, she is still nearly the same weight as she was in her heyday —  8st 10lb now compared to 8st 4lb.
But she says: “You’re either lucky or you’re not. Nature’s been good to me. I’ve never had cosmetic surgery, apart from trying Botox once — and I couldn’t move my forehead.”
Linda believes she inherited her youthful looks from her Italian dad Nello, who died last October aged 87.
She explains: “My dad used to be mistaken for my boyfriend sometimes. When I was 20 and he was about 50, he didn’t look his age.
“I was devastated when he died. He left a huge hole in my life.”
Despite being ten years older than her second husband, actor Sam Kane, 49, Linda has never been mistaken for anything other than his partner.
Linda and the former Brookside and Coronation Street star have been married for nearly 20 years.
And she credits Sam, who has featured alongside her during various panto runs, with keeping her young and fit — especially in the bedroom.
She says: “I used to worry about the age difference, but nobody has ever said to him, ‘Your wife looks old’.
“If I was married to someone ten years older I wouldn’t be so savvy on computers.”
And with a meaningful look she adds: “He keeps me fit that way, too. He’s still a virile young man.”
LINDA used to be close friends with football ace Paul Gascoigne – and once dressed him up as a woman to hide him from snappers.
Gazza, now 51, lived in a house across the road from her after he signed up with Tottenham Hotspur in 1988 and moved from Newcastle to London.
She explained: “I used to hide Gazza in the house when the paps were after a snap of him.
“One time he hid in my house and the paps realised and were all standing outside.
“I did him up with a wig and make up, gave him a handb
