The events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith are crucial for Anakin Skywalker. So why did Padme wait so long to tell Anakin that she was pregnant?
Although Obi-Wan had a suspicion, Anakin and Padme's marriage was one of the best-kept secrets of the Star Wars prequels. While their affection had to remain hidden, the two kept in frequent contact, even throughout the Clone Wars. But despite this, Anakin found out that Padme was pregnant only a couple of weeks before the twins were born. So, why did it take so long for her to tell him?
A specific timeframe for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith hasn't come out, but it's believed by most to take place in just under two weeks. In the old Star Wars canon, it was said to be a six-day period, despite former Lucasfilm creative executive Pablo Hidalgo stating on Twitter that it's closer to ten days. No matter the exact timeframe, it still means that Padme revealed Anakin's children to him only days before giving birth.
Chronologically, Anakin and Padme's final discussion before Revenge of the Sith was during the last season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars . With the Republic set up on the planet of Anaxes, Anakin made Captain Rex guard his barracks while he called with Padme. And during the conversation, Padme is holding her stomach and appears to have a bump, seemingly confirming she was pregnant long before Revenge of the Sith .
However, she chose not to tell Anakin, presumably because he was about to go into a battle. Anakin was prone to letting his emotions affect him, and knowing that Padme was pregnant would've thrown him completely off the task. And Padme probably didn't think that her husband would be fighting battles for months to come.
During the final year of the Clone Wars, the Republic made one last siege against the Separatists in the Outer Rim. These battles pushed General Grievous and his army back to the galaxy's edge, and Anakin was often front-and-center leading the charge. The Revenge of the Sith novelization reveals that Anakin and Obi-Wan were poster boys for the Republic and that their battles were often used as new broadcasts to cover the war. So, with Anakin fighting during the most important battles of the war and with cameras constantly showing his every move, Padme likely didn't want to distract him.
It's also possible that Padme wanted to see Anakin in person to tell him. But either way, she shared the news incredibly late. If Anakin were to return just a couple of weeks later, Luke and Leia might've been born without his knowledge. Unfortunately, that would've been for the best, as Anakin's fear of losing Padme is what pulls him to the dark side .
Ben has taken a 'Film Production & Cinematography' university course, and recently completed a 'Scriptwriting' masters course, both completed at Bournemouth University. Throughout the courses, he has worked on a number of short films and documentaries. And found that his passion lays in scriptwriting, where he can combine his love of movies, writing, and storytelling.

With taking courses involving film, Ben has extensive knowledge of movies both new and old, and keeps up to date on all the latest goings-on in the film industry. Especially within his favourite franchises, such as Star Wars.

In his spare time, Ben is usually watching movies, playing games and running D&D games for friends (and hopes to one day actually be a player).

Did Padme get pregnant before or after the Clovis Arc?
When did Padme Amidala become pregnant?
How did Anakin basically live with Padmé in an apartment without Obi-Wan knowing? Did he just lie where he goes?
We all know Anakin is immature. Why would Padmé, a person with a successful career in politics, marry Anakin and get pregnant? Doesn't she know any better? Was Padmé immature? Wasn’t Padmé more mature and older than Anakin?

Did Padme cheat on Anakin? Did Anakin ever cheat on Padme?
Did Palpatine kill Padme in Revenge of the Sith?

Why did Padme lose her will to live? She just had 2 kids. Doesn't that make her a bad parent?
Why didn't Anakin just ask Padme to get an abortion after his dreams about her dying in childbirth in ROTS instead of his much more far-fetched plan to learn the alleged powers of Darth Plagueis?
What did no one notice about Padme during her pregnancy?
Since the age gap between Anakin and Padme is only 4 or 5 years, isn't the relationship acceptable, especially since they weren't intimate until Anakin was an adult?

Something went wrong. Wait a moment and try again.
Well, I don’t know what Clone Wars Season 7 is doing, but in previous media she was attempting to hide the fact that she was pregnant. That’s part of why she wanted to have the baby on Naboo. If the truth about her pregnancy had come out, it would have caused a scandal that would have ended her political career and gotten Anakin expelled from the Jedi Order.
Somehow, in Episode III she goes from telling Anakin that she’s pregnant to giving birth to twins days later:
This is one reason why Star Wars’s Expanded Universe became so iffy about exact dates. If we start naming months and days, the whole house of cards falls down absurdly.
Since the canon-wipe, Star Wars has not touched exact dates or even days of the week with a 7 meter pole. The only weeks we have mentioned are holidays like “All Species Week,” a holiday on Coruscant and “Ascension Week” a Galactic holiday, in and the only days mentioned are also holiday

There is almost no way to rectify this. The Clone Wars has a retcon where Padmé looks pregnant as she talks to Anakin but this hardly explains how the hell she went from telling Anakin she was pregnant for the first time to giving birth.
The only way to really rectify this is:
So here’s the pills you have to swallow:
Honestly, the second set for me is way easier to swallow but still absurd to the point of being almost absurdist.

My first inclination is option 1, but I could see option 4 as a possibility as well.

I definitely do not think Luke and Leia were planned. I had always assumed that Anakin was on leave for a day or two from the war and they had passionate sex without thinking about birth control. Or there could have been a birth control failure--the GFFA, for all its technology, did not seem to have adequate technology to discover the presence of twins until Padme got ready to deliver. (Or that was Lucas writing himself into a corner because Anakin/Vader did not know he had a daughter until the throne room scene in ROTJ, so he could not find out in ROTS. Or, Padme was trying to keep a secret and did not seek prenatal care. Anyway...)

I don't think Sidious had anything to do with it, or he would have hunted down the twins, or at least Luke, long before the OT.

All that being said, there was a joke going around among several of us Anakin fans/A-P shippers when the first images from the nightmare scene came out. "Now we know why Padme got pregnant..."
That ol' Palpatine. He'll engineer wars, backstab his generals, and stick pins in your diaphragm.

Seriously though: Is anyone else finding it difficult to wrap their heads around the concept of birth control in the Star Wars universe?

Birth control wouldn't have mattered. Anakin's sperm is rich with midichlorians, and would have completed their mission regardless.

A better question is why Anakin thought Padme would just die in childbirth. They live in a futuristic society with ridiculous advances in medical care. Surely childbearing fatalities would be an extraordinarily rare occurrence.
