Pacific Island Nations and Climate Finance

What Pacific Island nations have achieved in the climate finance negotiations

The Achievement

The Pacific Island nations -- the most geographically vulnerable countries to climate change impacts and among the smallest contributors to cumulative greenhouse gas emissions -- have achieved specific outcomes in the climate finance negotiations that their outsized advocacy within the climate convention framework has produced. The specific outcomes: the Loss and Damage Fund that the COP28 agreement established was championed by Pacific Island advocacy at multiple COPs preceding the agreement.

The Reality

The reality: the Loss and Damage Fund is established in principle and underfunded in practice. The pledges made to the Fund at COP28 were approximately 700 million dollars against the billions annually that the Pacific Island nations identify as needed for the loss and damage their communities are already experiencing. The gap between the principle and the funding is the accountability journalism of climate finance.

Daily Asian News Coverage

Daily Asian News covers Pacific Island climate finance because the accountability journalism of climate justice requires covering the countries whose vulnerability is greatest and whose voice in the international negotiations has been disproportionately effective.
