Syed Muhammedali Shihab ThangalMuhammad Ali Shihab Tangal (Birth name: Mohammed Ali Shihab bin Ali Al-Hussaini Ba Alavi) (Arabic: محمد علي شهاب بن علي الحسيني با علوي) (4 May 1936 – 1 August 2009), known with the honorific prefix Sayed, was an Indian community leader, Islamic scholar and politician from Kerala. He is sometimes regarded as "the most important Mappila leader" of modern Kerala. Born in the Yemeni-origin sayyid or habib(thangal) Pukkoya family of Panakkad, a Qabila from Ba Alawi house of descendants of Hussayn bin Ali. Shihab Thangal also functioned as the president of the Kerala state committee of the Indian Union Muslim League (1975 - 2009). According to historian Roland Miller, "wisely and sensitively, he led Muslims through the landmines of state politics for over three decades. He also led the way into cordial relationships with members of other religious communities". There are many khabeelas in India. Khabeelas denote family names. For example, Shihab, Mashoor, Jifri, Al Hirdh, etc.
ThangalsThe Thangals (also spelled Tangals) are a social group[3] among the Muslims of Kerala, south India. The Thangals are often regarded as roughly equivalent to the more general Sayyids or Sharifs, or descendants of Muhammad, of the wider Islamic culture. Most members of the community practices endogamy and rarely marry spouses from outside their community. The Thangal families are numerous in Kerala, all receive recognition, but some are considered as saints. The Thangal identification brings much 'reverence and attention' in the Kerala Muslim community (which predominantly identifies with Shafi'i madhab). Some individuals take advice from the Thangals on crucial matters. A number of thangals in Kerala 'treat' people for illness and to 'ward off evils'. Shihab, Mashoor, Hirdh, Bafaqi, Jifri, Jamalullayli are some of major Thangal families have many gradations of status on social and economic scale. Influential of the Thangals generally come from prominent business families. They usually exercise their influence through commerce and politics.

Sayed Hyderali Shihab ThangalPanakkad Syed Hyderali Shihab Thangal or Hyder Ali AlHusseini Ba Alvi (15 June 1947 – 6 March 2022) was a sayyid (thangal) community leader and religious scholar from Kerala, southern India who was the Kerala State President and chairman, national political advisory committee, Indian Union Muslim League from 2009 to 2022. He was also the vice president of the Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyat al-'Ulama' (E. K. faction), the principal Sunni-Shafi'i scholarly body in Kerala. Hyderali Thangal was a member of the Pukkoya family of Panakkad (north Kerala). He was the third son of P. M. S. A. Pookkoya Thangal (1913 – 1975) and the younger brother of Sayed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal and Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal. He was the founding president of Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation (S.K.S. S. F.), the student wing of Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyat al-'Ulama', in 1973. He graduated from Jami'a Nooriyya, Perinthalmanna in 1989. He led the Sunni Yuvajana Sangham (S. Y. S.), the youth wing of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, and later served the Malappuram District President, Indian Union Muslim League for around two decades. Hyderali Thangal was elected as the successor to Mohammed Ali Thangal as the Kerala State President of Indian Union Muslim League in 2009. After Pookkoya Thangal, Hyderali Thangal was the only leader to head both the Muslim League and the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama simultaneously. He also served as the chairman of Kerala Wakf Board. He was also the founding chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University, Chemmad. He died at the Little Flower Hospital in Angamaly, on 6 March 2022, at the age of 74. Shashi Tharoor, the diplomat-turned-politician, described the Thangal as a "diminutive giant of Kerala politics" as he tweeted about his death.
Abdurrahiman Bafaki TangalAbdul Rahman Bafakhy Thangal (1905–1973) was an Indian community leader and politician from Kerala. Until his death in the early 1973, Bafakhy Thangal remained the most prominent Muslim political leader in Kerala. He is generally credited with transforming the perception of the Indian Union Muslim League inside Kerala. Bafakhy Thangal belonged to a sayyid family of jurists (the "Ba Faqih") in north Kerala. The Yemeni-origin family was settled in Kerala in the early 18th century. The Bafakhy Thangals were also a prominent business family in the city of Kozhikode by being international rice traders. Bafakhy Thangal was born to Abdul Qadir Bafakhy Thangal and Fathima Mulla Beevi on 19 February 1905 at Koyilandy. After studies at Ponnani, he moved to the lucrative export business at Calicut, became a prominent businessman, and eventually established the Bafaqi & Co. at Yangon, Myanmar. Bafakhy Thangal entered active politics in 1936 as a campaigner against an All-India Muslim League candidate from Kozhikode-Kurumbranad Constituency. He subsequently joined the League (1938), and rapidly rose to become the President of the Malabar Muslim League. He also helped to persuade Panakkad Pukkoya Thangal, a sayyid community leader from South Malabar, to join the League. When Kerala State was formed in 1956, he was chosen as the President of the Kerala State Muslim League. Bafakhy Thangal also served as the leader of the Samastha Kerala Jamiyyat al-Ulama. He is remembered for his organisation of the sector of madarasa education (institutions where children receive basic Islamic education) in Kerala. Founder of Bafakhy Yatheemkhanain Valavannur 1979 Bafakhy Thangal died in 1973 while on a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, and was interred in Mecca.

Pukkoya Thangal, of the Pukkoya family of Panakkad, South Malabar, was an Indian sayyid (thangal) community leader and Indian Union Muslim League politician from Kerala. He was born in 1913 as the son of Sayyid Husain Shihabudden Al-Hussaini Ba Alavi. He served as the Kerala State President, Indian Union Muslim League and the President of Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyat al-'Ulama' (the body of Sunni-Shafi'i scholars in Kerala). The Ahmad Shihabuddeen was born in the Yemeni-Hadrami origin Pukkoya family, Which is one of Ba Alawi house of descendants from Husayn bin Ali, The grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Pukkoya Thangal was succeeded by his eldest son Syed Muhammed Ali Shihab Thangal (1936–2009).

Pukkoya family of PanakkadPukkoya family of Panakkad is a Yemeni-origin sayyid (thangal) family based in present-day northern Kerala. The family, claiming descent from the family of Muhammad, is generally revered by the Sunni Shāfiʿī Kerala Muslims. The thangals are respected as religious and political leaders amongst the Muslims of Kerala. The Panakkad family descended from Sayyid Ali who emigrated from the Ḥaḍramawt region of Yemen to Kerala in the 18th century along with his family. By the 19th century, the ethnic Yemenis came to occupy a powerful position within the north Kerala Muslim community. They were eventually recognized as the theological, juridical, and political community leaders of Kerala Muslims. Kodappanakal House is the ancestral house of the family. Sayyid Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal (born 1964) is the eldest Panakkad Thangal at present.

He currently serves as the Kerala State President, Indian Union Muslim League, Chancellor of Darul Huda Islamic University Sadiq Ali Thangal is a member of the Pukkoya family of Panakkad (south Malabar). He is the son of P. M. S. A. Pukkoya Thangal and the younger brother of Mohammedali Thangal, Umerali Thangal and Hyderali Thangal. He is associated with Samastha Kerala Sunni Students Federation (S. K. S. S. F.) and Sunni Yuvajana Sangam (S. Y. S.), the student and youth wings of the E. K. faction of Samastha Kerala Jam'iyyat al-'Ulama', the principal Sunni-Shafi'i scholarly body in Kerala, and the Youth League, the youth wing of Indian Union Muslim League. He also served as the Malappuram District President, Indian Union Muslim League for over a decade. He later led the party de facto for a short span in the absence of his ailing brother Hyderali Thangal. Sadiq Ali Thangal was chosen as the successor to Hyderali Thangal as the Kerala State President, Indian Union Muslim League in 2022. Sadiq Ali Thangal also serves as the Chairman, National Political Advisory Committee, Indian Union Muslim League. He is also Vice-President, Mounathul Islam Sabha, Ponnani, President, Noorul Huda Islamic College and Chairman, Islamic Centre, Kozhikode. He is also the member of the executive committee of the Samastha Matha Vidyabhyasa Board.
