Leveling the Playing Field for the Little Guy
The project paving the way for bringing non-ERC-20 assets to Ethereum in a decentralized way is called Ren (REN).
Taiyang Zhang and Loong Wang started the project in late 2017 as a way to make crypto transactions truly private. They introduced “dark pools,” which enabled users to place and execute trades on a hidden order book.
Not only did this protect users’ identities, but it also prevented bots from front-running their trades, since no one can see what orders are placed.
Nearly a year after Ren’s inception, the team built and launched the first decentralized dark pool, RenEx. RenEx was a major step forward in innovation… but failed to gain any major adoption.
That’s because Ren’s solutions to moving coins across different blockchains (called cross-chain interoperability) was risky, slow, and expensive at the time.
So earlier this year, Ren developers launched the Ren Virtual Machine (RenVM), which created fast, seamless, secure cross-chain interoperability.
RenVM serves as a decentralized custodian that mints and burns digital assets 1:1 on Ethereum as ERC-20 tokens. Meaning it holds the original non-ERC-20 asset and creates a “wrapped” version of the token for use on the Ethereum blockchain.
All of this is done in a decentralized way that doesn’t require trusting a person or corporation. Rules-based computer code acts as the custodian. This now allows traders and investors alike to essentially use non-ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain.
Currently, RenVM allows you to transact five non-ERC-20 tokens: bitcoin, Zcash, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin, and Filecoin. But its technology is compatible with as many as 160 non-ERC-20 coins.
This essentially opens up just about every non-Ethereum coin that matters… to the entire Ethereum DeFi ecosystem.
Bringing It All Together
Decentralized finance usage is booming. This is a long-lived, unstoppable trend. Non-Ethereum-based projects must figure out a way to get their tokens trading on the largest, most liquid Defi protocols in the world. That means they must be able to migrate to and from the Ethereum ecosystem.
Ren offers the best solution to fit this need at scale. Its combination of low cost and high security ensures Ren is setting itself up to be an integral part of the DeFi infrastructure.
