Campobello Island thumbnail

Campobello Island

Campobello Island (, also US: ) is the largest and only inhabited island in Campobello Parish in southwestern New Brunswick, Canada, near the border with Maine, United States. It is the site of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park, Head Harbour Lighthouse, and of Herring Cove Provincial Park. It has been an incorporated rural community since 2010 and is a member of the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission (SNBSC). Despite the name, the rural community also includes all other islands in the parish. The island is part of Charlotte County, which was formed in 1784 when New Brunswick was partitioned from Nova Scotia. In 1770, the island was granted to Capt. William Owen, who named it in honour of Lord William Campbell, who was governor of Nova Scotia, and noting "Campo Bello" meant "Beautiful Field" in Italian.

Deer Island (New Brunswick) thumbnail

Deer Island (New Brunswick)

Deer Island is one of the Fundy Islands at the entrance to Passamaquoddy Bay in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. Settled in the 18th century primarily by Loyalists fleeing the United States, it remains a fishing settlement built around fishing, aquaculture, herring weirs and lobster pounds. The Old Sow tidal whirlpool, the largest in the western hemisphere, is off its southern coast. Although it has only a third the population it had before the 1950s, the "quiet and reposeful" Deer Island is the main centre of West Isles Parish and falls under the Southwest NB Regional Service Commission.

Parker Island (New Brunswick)

Parker Island is an undeveloped island in the West Isles Parish of Charlotte County, New Brunswick, Canada, where the Bay of Fundy enters Passamaquoddy Bay. In 1832, Thomas Baillie wrote of an island south of Macs Island "which has been settled, but now is deserted. It contains about fifty acres, and is fit for a fisherman.", which could reference Parker or Jameson Island. In December 1985, a study by Parks Canada assessed the island's value as $26,100.
