Although pornographic films have been around since the late 1800s, even having a near-mainstream surge in popularity in the early ’70s thanks to films like 1972’s “Deep Throat” and provocateurs like Andy Warhol, major films about the pornography business took a lot longer to gain mass appeal. Early works, like Paul Schrader’s 1979 “Hardcore,” treated the industry as dark and sinister. But things lightened up considerably with the honest and heartfelt depiction of the adult films and the people who make them in Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 hit “Boogie Nights,” which earned plenty of awards buzz. From there the floodgates opened, from broad comedies (2004’s “The Girl Next Door”) to rom-coms (2008’s “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”) to complex biopics (2013’s “Lovelace”). To coincide with the release of Sean Baker’s acclaimed indie “Red Rocket,” about a down-on-his-luck adult actor returning to his Texas hometown, Variety has selected the top 10 movies about porn stars.
This buzzy biopic-courtroom drama of late “Hustler” mastermind Larry Flynt focuses on the pornographer’s numerous First Amendment cases, as well as his recovery from an assassination attempt and relationship with stripper-turned-“Hustler” publisher Althea Leasure. Despite the subject matter and numerous controversies in Flynt’s personal life, Woody Harrelson was nominated for Best Actor at the Academy Awards for the title role, while an electric Courtney Love surprised audiences with her complex portrayal of Althea.
Trey Parker wrote, directed and stars in this broad comedy about a cash-strapped Mormon who accidentally becomes a porn star, thanks to his portrayal of an X-rated superhero. Although Parker himself might not be a household name, the television show he co-created with his “Orgazmo” co-star Matt Stone — “South Park” — has made him one of the wealthiest entertainers ever. In fact, the film opened just weeks after the controversial and hugely-successful debut of the series. “Orgazmo” mines plenty of Farrelly brothers-esque hijinks, and themes that would be better developed in the duo’s sublime musical “The Book of Mormon.” But this film has enough raunchy, “Let’s put on a show!” enthusiasm to elevate it from curio status.
Bob Fosse’s final film followed the real-life rise of Playboy model Dorothy Stratten, portrayed by Mariel Hemingway, and brutal murder by her husband, played by Eric Roberts. A grim departure from Fosse’s typical fare, the movie faced criticism and lawsuits from many of the people portrayed onscreen — including Hugh Hefner and Peter Bogdanovich — but it remains a dynamic portrait of a tragedy in the world of nude modeling.
A horror movie set in the world of modern sex work, “Cam” stars a fearless Madeline Brewer as Alice, who becomes “Lola” when camming for fans. Playing with themes of identity and fame, Brewer’s performance blurs the lines of fantasy and reality as Alice begins seeing a Lola doppelgänger that jeopardizes her quest to become the No. 1 most popular cam girl. A trippy, unflinching ride, writer Isa Mazzei makes the story sing with details she picked up while working as a cam model herself.
This raunchy rom-com brought Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks together as two friends falling in love as they hustle to pay the bills through shooting porn. Directed by Kevin Smith, the lighthearted, featherweight comedy merged the raunchy sensibilities of his own View Askewniverse with in-vogue Apatow Productions, bringing actors from both camps into one movie. Although it was a box office flop, it seems destined to be cult classic date night fare for couples willing to walk on the wild side.
Paul Schrader wrote and directed this spiritual companion piece to “Taxi Driver,” another dive into a dark world of sex and violence. But this film follows a father, played by George C. Scott, who sets out to find his missing daughter after coming across a porno in which she appears. Like many Schrader joints, there isn’t subtlety in this world — as illustrated by the tagline on the film’s poster: “Oh my God, that’s my daughter.” Despite the campier moments, Scott’s performance is strong as a man grappling with faith as he get too deep in the world of pornography.
Lynn Shelton’s funny, shambling look at male friendship stars Mark Duplass and Joshua Leonard as two straight bros who lose touch and, through a series of escalating ideas at a party, decide to film an x-rated film together as a piece of art to submit to the HUMP! film festival, a real-life Seattle amateur porn competition. This low-budget gem was cobbled together over 10 days for $20,000, and the improvised dialogue gives an ease to some of the uncomfortable conversations and sexual dynamics within.
Shane Black’s hardboiled comedy brings a tough guy enforcer (Russell Crowe) and a hapless private eye (Ryan Gosling, in total goofball mode) together to solve a knotty, noir-ish crime involving a porn star named Misty Mountains and a mysterious adult film named “How Do You Like My Car, Big Boy?” After an explosive opening scene leaves Misty dead, her tragic end keeps the duo focused on the crime, even as hijinks and bad luck surrounds them. Featuring one of the funniest adults-only parties committed to film, “The Nice Guys” is a blissed-out ride through the underbelly of ’70s Los Angeles.
Sean Baker’s portrait of faded porn star Mikey Saber feels like a southern-fried Safdie brothers movie, a ticking clock examining how far a man can fall from grace. Simon Rex plays Mikey as a magnificent fuckboi, charismatic until he’s cruel, sweet until he’s violent, a braggart who probably doesn’t even know what’s true anymore. Falling on hard times after a lengthy run at the top of the XXX game, he returns to his desolate Texas hometown to try to reconcile with his estranged wife and start a new life. But from grooming a teen to be the next big porn star to selling drugs to the wrong people, Mikey soon finds himself persona non grata to everyone around. Baker’s sharp script and visually arresting direction leave you rooting for all of the characters, even as their intentions grow increasingly dark.
Paul Thomas Anderson’s masterful look at the adult film scene in the San Fernando Valley is a meticulously made look at ’70s culture, decadence and the entertainment industry, as a career-best Mark Wahlberg takes the city by storm as the massively endowed porn star Dirk Diggler. Wahlberg is surrounded by a stable of brilliant actors, able to find the humanity within the larger-than-life personalities and hangers-on swirling around Dirk, from a splashy late career performance by Burt Reynolds to a heartbreaking turn from Julianne Moore. Add a perfect soundtrack, beautiful camerawork from frequent PTA collaborator Robert Elswit and a late ’90s audience that was game to embrace a sprawling porn epic, and a big, bright, shining star of a movie was born.
Star 80 has nothing to do with porn. Dorothy Stratten was not a porn star. What the hell is wrong with you people?

A UK mom and dad cemented their spot in the amateur porn pantheon for documenting their realistic “sex sessions” — a salacious side hustle that reportedly nets them nearly $50,000 (£35,000) a month. The candid couple detailed their lusty lifestyle in an interview with UK television show “Real Fix,” South West News Service reported.
“It never gets boring for us,” said Jess Miller, 33, who started making skin flicks with her husband, Mike, 34, four years ago.
Now, the Southend-on-Sea residents rake in about $46,200 a month across Pornhub, Fansly and their OnlyFans page , which boasts a whopping 900,000 subscribers.
The sexhibitionist soulmates chalk up their appeal in part to the fact that they’re actually married, which makes their sex tapes appear less produced and more natural.
“We put a camera in the room and people can see what it’s really like when we have sex,” explained Jess, who is a part-time makeup artist, of their tactics. “I don’t really feel like we’re porn stars — as we’re just doing what we normally would but filming it.”
The mother of two added that a lot of fans “say it’s nice to see real love,” while some gawkers even claim their vids have “saved their relationship.”
Mike, a former personal trainer, summed it up like this: “I get to have sex with my wife every day and love life and get paid for it.”
The Millers’ path to porn stardom began in 2012 after Jess met her future co-star at the gym where he worked at the time, SWNS reported.
After hitting it off, the lovebirds tied the knot in 2017 and had a son, now 8. The pair are also raising Jess’ 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
Mike said they decided to go into porn since they “were struggling to have quality time together because we were stressed with our businesses.
“I thought this might be a great side hustle for us,” added Mike, and the two posted their first video to the online pleasure purveyor in 2018.
Along with their aforementioned porn platforms, the couple has a website where gawkers can access all their sites , and even send special requests.
“We’ve made £150 [$197] just for a video of us tickling each other,” said Jess, who frequently posts steamy snaps for the couple’s 131,000 followers on Instagram.
“I’ve had someone ask me to dress up as Elsa and play the ‘Frozen’ song in the background,” she recalled. “I said no to that one.”
The porn paramours recently upped their game and introduced a third member to their candid carnal congregations — a move they teased on various platforms. “FIRST EVER THREESOME VID COMING THIS WEEK!!” the Millers wrote on OnlyFans. “Come and get naughty with us you won’t regret it!!!”
Jess admitted that the change “was nerve-wracking, but we see it as work and we’re all professional.”
While the Millers initially kept their side gig a secret, it reportedly only took about a month for some friends to find out; they decided to come clean to their family in 2020.
Jess said their coming-out party went surprisingly well.
“So, I told my mum from there and she was really chilled about it,” she claimed. “All our families care about is that we are happily married and that we love each other.”
Surprisingly, the Millers received a similar reaction when spilling the beans to their kids. “Our eldest knows pretty much everything,” explained Jess. “I ask him what he thinks and he just says: ‘It’s none of my business.’
“One is too young to fully know what we do, our eldest was very mature and said as long as we are happy and love them, then it’s not a problem at all,” she added.
The adult entertainers say that they do “receive nasty comments online” but it doesn’t faze them.
Ultimately, the skin merchants assert that their porn career has made them closer.
“Our bond is stronger than it’s ever been,” Jess said. “We’re happy and our kids are happy so that’s all that matters.”
The Millers aren’t the first lovebirds to enter the adult entertainment industry. In June, a disgraced Australian police officer who was infamously busted snorting coke off a Playboy model’s nude body embarked on a porn career with the same woman.
