I’m not the only one trying new things during quarantine. My sister, who has a penchant for all things creative, persuaded our dad to give her his old DSLR camera several weeks ago. Armed with a lens, a 2010 photography book, and whatever props she could find in her closet, she took our backyard by storm. Since I was bored and starved for Instagram content after spending nearly two months inside, I agreed to be her model.
To be clear, I’m by no means an “actual” model–way too short and uncoordinated for that. I’ve had my picture taken before, but not like this. The instruction I received during my family’s holiday photo shoot a few years back or from the friend who took my college graduation pictures last May was light–more of a suggestion than anything else. We were bound by time and already had poses in mind.
This time, there was no instruction. My sister was as new to photography as I was at posing dramatically or putting together outfits. We decided to do a cozy theme (which is really all you can work with when you only pack loungewear and forget all of your makeup) and to do two shoots–one in our backyard and one in my bedroom/guest room/Mom’s office (you know the saying, “beggars can’t be choosers”? Well, young adults who move out of their parents’ homes only to come back when a global pandemic hits can’t be choosers either).
The two hours that followed were pretty far out of my comfort zone… and yet, I had a lot of fun. I almost always smile in photos–this time, I tried to channel my inner Instagram model and smize (spoiler: I failed a lot). For every good dramatic pose or facial expression, we had at least 20 pictures of me laughing at myself, falling out of a chair, or fixing my clothes. My sister squeezed herself behind furniture and perched on chairs to get the shots she envisioned. By the time we finished, she had plenty of material to work with for editing. I was seriously impressed by some of the images she captured after only working with the camera for a couple weeks. And, I felt surprisingly empowered by the whole thing. Some insecurities or areas of self-consciousness never really go away, but when she was posing me and sharing affirmations (of how I looked and of her own skill, usually “yaaaaaas”), I forgot about those.
All in all, I had a really good time. I got a pretty good Instagram post out of it and got to watch my sister flex her creative muscles, which always impresses me.
