The topless activist was found dead in her Paris flat on Monday
A FOUNDING member of controversial radical feminist movement Femen, Oksana Shachko, was found dead in her Paris apartment, yesterday July 23.
The 31-year-old from Ukraine became known for her topless protests with Femen which regularly challenged the policies of powerful groups and individuals.
These included President Putin, whose supporters are said to have once abducted her while he was visiting Shachko’s home country, it is claimed.
She later escaped to France, where her body was found with a note at her apartment on Monday.
Inna Shevchenko, a Femen member based in the French capital, said: "It is with great regret and deep pain that I must confirm the death of Oksana."
As Paris detectives launched an enquiry, friends paid tribute to the young woman.
Friend Anna Hutsol said: "We mourn together with her relatives and friends", adding that she was waiting for "the official version from the police."
Femen member Alisa Vinogradova told news agency Central European News: "We are shocked and waiting for the autopsy results."
Before her death, Ms Shachko posted on Instagram, saying: "You are fake," but it is not clear who was the target of her post.
Her close friend Valeriy Puzik wrote on Facebook: "I have known you since you were 16 and I never could imagine that you would take your own life... You were from another planet, a comet that is flying by. I am recalling a handful of memories about you, R.I.P."
There was no immediate comment from Paris police or prosecutors about her death and a post mortem is being carried out on her body to confirm the cause of death.
Since it was founded in Kiev in 2008, the Femen movement has won notoriety in Europe for its stands - usually topless - against sex tourism, homophobia and religious institutions.
Shachko was one of four feminists who a decade ago founded Femen in Ukraine, the eastern European state involved in a bitter territorial dispute with Putin’s Russia, which annexed its Crimean peninsula using military force in 2014.
Femen regularly organised topless protests against reactionary regimes, and the institutions that support them.
Now based in Paris, it claims to be an enemy of ‘patriarchy in its three manifestations – sexual exploitation of women, dictatorship and religion.’
In April 2013, five members launched a "topless ambush" of Putin as he visited the Hanover trade fair with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Two years earlier, Shachko herself briefly disappeared during a Putin visit to Ukraine, with her colleagues saying "unknown agents" believed to be linked to Putin had beaten her up.
In 2011, she was also one of three Femen activists arrested in Belarus after staging a topless protest against President Alexander Lukashenko.
There were claims that the trio of women had their hair cut off by force, and then they were threatened with being set on fire.
Since moving to France in 2013, and being granted political refugee status, Shachko had officially ended her day-to-day work with Femen, and was trying to build up a career as an artist.

Heidi Montag left little to the imagination for a new maternity photo shoot.
“The Hills” alum – who is expecting her second child with husband Spencer Pratt – looked radiant as she showed off her burgeoning bump in the stunning maternity snaps.
“Thank you @oxanaalexphotography for capturing this moment of time, embracing the beauty and transformation during #pregnancy,” Montag, 35, captioned an Instagram post, which showed her lying on her side in a sea of tulle, surrounded by pastel flowers.
The reality TV star donned a lilac bra and underwear as she pouted for the camera and played with her long blond hair.
Other photos from the shoot, obtained by Page Six, feature Montag posing entirely in the nude.
One of the shots captures Montag cupping her breasts with her hands, while another shows her censoring her private areas with a bunch of flowers.
The “Laguna Beach” alum, who welcomed son Gunner with Pratt, 39, in 2017, has been outspoken about her fertility struggles.
Her second pregnancy was a long time in the making as she underwent a surgical procedure in August 2021 to increase the couple’s chances of conceiving again.
The couple revealed their efforts paid off earlier this year when Montag told fans that she was expecting a second child with Pratt, with whom she’s been married to for 14 years.
“I just felt like something was missing,” the “Body Language” singer wrote in an Instagram post at the time. “I felt like a person was missing in our family that I had this intense love for.”
Montag noted that she started “hysterically crying” when she saw the word “pregnant” on her test.
“Gunner asked me why I was crying and I told him I was so happy because he is going to be a big brother!” the MTV star said.
“To say we are all thrilled is an understatement. I am so thankful! We are so excited for the journey ahead.”

Disabled rower Oksana Masters has bared all for ESPN 's 2012 Body Issue ahead of this year's Paralympic Games in London.
The 23-year-old athlete, whose legs were amputated as a child, shows off her toned physique, and tattoos, in the magazine's glossy pages, sitting nude on a jetty with her oars beside her.
The spectacular image accompanies photographs of world-class athletes including New York Knicks basketball player Tyson Chandler and Slovakian tennis star Daniela Hantuchova.

In the annual issue, where famous sports stars strip off and talk about their beautiful bodies, the Ukraine-born athlete reveals she can go days without eating, having grown up in an orphanage where food was scarce.
'Growing up in a very poor orphanage in Ukraine, there wasn't much food,' she said.
'I can go days without eating if I don't think about food. Your mind, to protect itself, learns not to pay attention to that hunger feeling.
Impressive: Ms Masters, pictured, is competing in the London Paralympic Games, starting in August
Partners: Paralympic Rower Oksana Masters and partner Rob Jones, pictured, train six days a week
'That's why for me, eating is one of the hardest things.'
The rower, who was adopted at age seven and later moved to Louisville, Kentucky, told KLTV that her disability was caused by exposure to a nuclear power plant near her village.

'I was born with legs, but they were so deformed,' she said.
'In my village, they actually had frequent leaks, the radiation would just leak out.'
After suffering searing pain, both legs were amputated.
She was encouraged to try adaptive rowing in the eight grade by her mother and soon fell in love with the water.
Ms Masters said training for the Paralympic games, which run from August 29 until September 9, was like a full time job.
'We are on the water six out of seven days a week,' she said.
Her partner, Rob Jones, lost his legs after stepping on an IED in Afghanistan in 2010.
Their rowing mixed doubles team beat Brazil to win the World Cup in Serbia qualifying for the Paralympics.
The sports star said she couldn't wait to take her boat from the mighty Ohio to Dorney Lake in England, where the rowing events for the 2012 summer games will be held.
'I don't think it really hit me and I don't think it has still hit me,' Ms Masters told KLTV.
'It's London, that it's the games and it's the big goal I've been training for, for six years.
'I'm so excited and I get goose bumps thinking about it. Obviously, I smile like a big cheesy kid.'
