On June 12, the world was given the biggest update for Overwatch 2 to date. During the Xbox Live portion of Summer Games Fest Blizzard Entertainment announced the new release date for Overwatch 2. The announcement was accompanied by a short video that revealed some major changes to Overwatch as a whole. Overwatch will be free to play and the October release will also feature a confirmed brand new hero. Though fans who watched closely would have seen a teaser for the next potential hero after Junker Queen. Here is a look at the Kanezaka Fox Hero.
In just a short snippet, the Overwatch 2 announcement revealed plenty of hints for a new hero. At the start of the scene viewers witness a ghostly fox prancing across the screen. A slow pan out shows the deathmatch map Kanezaka, a map tied to a short story about a vigilante that lived below the Hanamura castle. Quickly after, the fox leaves behind a trail of ghost footprints that guides four other characters through the arches. Suddenly everyone is off screen and the trailer progresses.
The first thing that sticks out to players is that iconic fox. Because of the Kanezaka story that debuted quick some time ago, people were already acquainted with a potential fox-based hero. With only four heroes in the scene, it adds more weight to the idea that there is a new character in the works.
Audiences are starting to believe that this Kanezaka fox hero is actually the newest support. The fox appears to be leading the group and applying a speed boost to those who follow. This could mean that there is finally a support that is not solely about healing. For the time being this is the only ability people can speculate around. Until we see more from the Overwatch team, players can only guess as to what this Kanezaka fox hero can do.

Overwatch
Could a new Shimada-focused event be on the horizon?
More lore has been released surrounding the history of Overwatch’s Shimada Clan—and it looks like the Shimada brothers have a new enemy on their hands.
Overwatch revealed a new piece of lore today surrounding the history of Genji and Hanzo’s clan in their home of Hanamura, showing a new side to their story that’s grown over the course of five years.
[CORRESPONDENCE] As winter leads to spring, let me write a letter of lightness. Perhaps it will grant us both a little peace, even as I turn my blade to keeping the peace here from shattering altogether. – Asa https://t.co/ZjcmZZcCI7 pic.twitter.com/HoKTQoN1Oe
The letter is written by Asa Yamagami, a woman whose husband, Toshiro, was seemingly captured by the rival Hashimoto Clan, leaving her and her young daughter alone in Kanezaka hoping that the Shimada Clan could retain the peace. She mentions that her husband left a set of blades for her daughter, yet also forged many for the Hashimoto Clan in captivity.
In a recent developer update, Jeff Kaplan revealed that Kanezaka will join the rotation of Deathmatch maps in Overwatch in early 2021. And with this drop of lore, it seems like its release is imminent.
Asa provides a descriptive look into the atmosphere of Kanezaka that highlights the livelihood of the area, as well as its notable history as the home of the Shimada Clan. But it seems that as of late, the Hashimoto Clan and their control of the area have been the target of vicious attacks by an unknown presence, which has only heightened the tension and fear of the residents of Kanezaka who are at their will.
This new lore drop could be hinting at an upcoming release of Kanezaka, as well as the possibility of a new event tied to it featuring the Shimada Clan against the Hashimoto Clan. There’s also the possibility that this could be the first of many teasers for Hero 31, but it’s too early to say for sure.

A fun new glitch is discovered in Overwatch, with players managing to leave the boundaries of the new Kanezaka map to reach Hanamura.
Overwatch fans were treated with a surprise map drop yesterday, bringing Free-For-All players some variety while also teasing the future of the franchise. Unsurprisingly, players have also already found out how to escape the map, finding a way to reach the popular Overwatch locale of Hanamura.
The glitch discovery comes courtesy of a clever fan skilled with Sombra’s translocator . Going by the Reddit name -Har1eKing-, the Overwatch player throws the damage character’s teleportation device between a small gap to the left of Kanezaka’s ramen shop. From there, the player used Sombra’s translocator to climb the massive tree, throwing and teleporting constantly until they reach the top of a massive rock in the distance. While the player’s goal may seem like an army of dedicated Sombra players sitting on the rock, the real prize is the area above.
Though there is nothing special to see on the massive boulder that the group of Sombra players rests upon, seeing Hanamura’s walls towering above the players is certainly memorable. By breaking the Overwatch map boundaries , Sombra users can reach the Hanamura backdrop that is seen from below on the main portion of Kanezaka. Picking up the pace and climbing across the cherry tree leaves that line the walls of the castle, the player gets a good look at the main tower where an objective can be found on the actual Hanamura map.
While not fully modeled, there is a surprising amount of detail in the out-of-map version of Hanamura, with the few walls and buildings included having finished textures. Once reaching the other end of the area and sitting upon another rock, the interesting clip from -Har1eKing- comes to an end. Players who want to reach Hanamura will need to change the settings to remove cooldowns on abilities like the translocator, making the glitch impossible to pull off in a public match of Kanezaka .
While an out-of-map rendering of Hanamura is certainly a fun addition for fans, the Kanezaka free-for-all map is full of details. Aside from a cat cafe that would be loved by heroes like Brigitte, multiple easter eggs can be found that hint at future heroes. With a piece of wall art teasing an Overwatch hero named Brit and a spot of graffiti hinting at a previously teased hero with a fox pet, Kanezaka shows that the future of the Overwatch series is looking bright.
While players have plenty to enjoy right now in the current Overwatch game due to the addition of Kanezaka and the Winter Wonderland event, Overwatch 2 is quickly approaching. With a major Overwatch 2 update confirmed for BlizzConline in February, creative Sombra fans should be getting some new maps to glitch out of soon.
Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch and Xbox One.
