im gay for all the women in overwatch tbh
“I think that our job as ‘actors of color’--or whatever we want to call it these days, I hate…I don’t even like to call it [that]--our job is not to aim for diversity and representation and Noah’s Ark ‘two of everything’…but to aim for inclusivity, and to aim for ‘everybody belongs in this world with all of their complexity.’ And there happen to be these things [*pantamimes boxes*] that, I could look at this character and say that she’s Indian, she does this, she does Indian classical dance, blah blah blah, but no one of those things define her. She is the only thing that defines her.
It’s a really long way around saying that this game has given us agency to help that process by focusing past the two dimensional version of things that we might be used to having to do on, say, network television. Now we have the freedom to build complexity.” - Anjali Bhimani, voice actor of Symmetra

I’m listening to a panel called The Women of Overwatch featuring the voice actors for Symmetra, Mercy, and Sombra, as well as the senior casting director/voice director for Overwatch, and I am honestly blown away. So much emphasis is put on how the voice director (Andrea Toyias) makes the actors feel safe and accepted for who they are, and that the amazing voice acting in Overwatch is in large part due to the voices coming from real people as opposed to forced caricatures/stereotypes. Almost every single character in Overwatch hails from a different nationality, and rather than simply hire voice actors who can put on convincing accents, the director hired voice actors from the appropriate countries. (I love that Ana’s voice actor, Aysha Selim, is an actual badass older Egyptian woman who does her voice acting remotely from Cairo.)
If creators/directors aren’t all up in arms for diversity and inclusivity for its own sake, they should take note that a massively popular piece of modern media got amazing, rich, memorable voice acting out of simply allowing people from different cultures to speak in an environment where they felt safe and accepted.
Some SwiftJustice for @duela-quinzel who requested it! I loved drawing some of my favorite ladies together as pilot gfs. I’m a dirty multishipper lul. <3
