We Played ‘Overwatch’ in VR Using ‘Bigscreen’ and It Was Awesome

Instead of recording a typical podcast this week, we decided to play Overwatch together on Memorial Day and record it in VR using Bigscreen . Hope you enjoy! The standard UploadVR Gamecast will be back next week!
A lot of people tell me that after they got their Rift or Vive they can’t imagine ever going back to non-VR gaming. For me, I’ll never reach that point. I love both types of gaming for different reasons and sometimes I don’t want to be fully immersed in a 3D 360-degree world. Sometimes, I want to hang out on my couch, with a gamepad in hand, and just look straight ahead at a TV or computer screen while talking or visiting with friends. Luckily, thanks to Bigscreen , now I can do all of that while also being in VR.
Bigscreen is a social VR application that transports you to a virtual apartment. There are multiple different rooms to hang out in with people in both public and private settings and each person gets a customizable screen that floats in front of them. This screen acts like a portal to your actual desktop, allowing you to do anything on your computer you’d do outside of VR, except you’re inside VR, sharing the space with friends. It’s like a more advanced and social version of screensharing.
In the video above, you can watch a compilation of clips of me, Staff Writer Joe Durbin, and Tech Editor Ian Hamilton, all playing Overwatch together. There were some technical hiccups due to the program still being in beta and Ian’s decidedly terrible internet connection, but everything worked pretty well on my end without any issues. Overwatch isn’t a VR game, but it was a lot of fun to play while hanging out in VR.
As stated, the normal UploadVR Gamecast will be back next week. In the meantime you can always listen to previous episodes via this link on our site here, or subscribe:
We also just launched our Steam Community Page and we hope to see all of you on there as well. See you next week!

A group of South Korean high school students make Overwatch VR a reality, combining a Samsung Gear VR headset and some sensors to play as Soldier: 76 in virtual reality.
Since its release in May 2016, Overwatch players have invented a variety of ways to play the game outside of its traditional input methods. From the streamer who played played the game with a controller made out of bananas , to the player who played the game with a nerf bow , there seems to be no end to these players' creativity.
This creativity has been showcased again, but this time by a group of South Korean high school students. The students, who are part of their school's science club, have created a way to play Overwatch with a virtual reality headset to makes players feel as though they are really in the first-person shooter.
The students have combined a Samsung Gear VR headset, a smartphone, motion detectors, an IBM sensor, and a custom made gun controller. Their efforts, which can be seen in the video below, resemble the Virtuix Omni treadmill (an "active virtual reality motion controller") and have been combined to play as Soldier: 76. The character's ultimate ability, Tactical Visor – which lets players auto-aim at their enemies – is also seen in the video, as once it's charged, the player can just touch the headset as Soldier: 76 would to activate it.
Although the set-up looks good, it's not without its issues, as many have pointed out the significant amount of input lag. In a game like Overwatch , which offers competitive multiplayer, even the smallest amount of lag can spell the difference between a snowballing win and an overwhelming defeat, so the lag would need to be addressed for it to work properly. Moreover, the headset tap means that activating ultimates as other characters (such as Reinhardt's Earthshatter or D.Va's Self-Destruct) is nowhere near as intuitive, thus giving Soldier: 76 players a bit of an advantage.
Of course, these problems could all be addressed if Blizzard wanted to give Overwatch VR a proper go, offering official VR headset support for the game. With Blizzard considering cross-platform support and with many fans also hoping for a Nintendo Switch port , virtual reality headset support for Overwatch seems highly unlikely at this point.
However, if VR headset sales start to look a little less disappointing , it may just be in Blizzard's best, financial interests to introduce virtual reality headset support to the game after all. So, who knows? Maybe it will get the official, Blizzard treatment at some point in the future.
Overwatch is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Overwatch is Blizzard's IP . I am not affiliated with Blizzard.
Grab and hold using the grip buttons, fire using the trigger.
Reaper's guns can be pulled from under your head.
You can teleport using the touchpad.
All of this was pretty rushed, so there's flaws like McCree's Peacekeeper not being able to reload. Sorry :|

Still hoping for an update that brings more weapons :)
There's a specific area under your headset, where you can grab them from. If the controllers are in the area, they will vibrate slightly.

anyone own an Oculus Rift? or did those things pretty much flop?
Overwatch VR will be here in at least 20 years, but I wonder if anything is currently being worked on.
Blizzard is not known so much for delivering gimmicks as much as they are for delivering quality in the actual game experience. In addition virtual reality platforms are single player experiences for the most part. I would not hold your breath for a VR version of Overwatch anytime soon.
On that note, if you are interested virtual reality gaming, I recommend the HTC Vive platform over that of Oculus Rift.

well at least VR is making some headway in the gaming market
Overwatch VR would probably have us puking nonstop.
Just imagine playing Tracer with VR.
They are just in the gimmicks of competitive gaming over majority of the player base. No time for VR. : )

Pretty much this. VR is awesome for racing games, flight simulation, etc., but it’s not going to be an FPS thing any time soon.
It is too expensive and still too gimmicky.
Wrecking ball would probably end up actually making people have seizures.
VR is not known just for single player experiences. Just look at vr chat and second life

It’s funny because now Oculus products are more popular then Vive products.
I know this an old post, so pardon bringing this subject back up.
I just played Half Life Aylix with Rift S headset. Wow. Amazing. Simply. I would love to see how overwatch will be done with vr. How blizzard would do it.
WoW VR would be simply… interesting.
I wonder what the price of Valve x Microsoft x HP next gen vr headset is going to be and i do hope it will have Valve Index knuckles.
