How does one set up an overwatch trap?
Everytime I get them to walk and break my concealment they just shoot the guy they found flanked. :(
Wanted to try it ever since I read about it.
try getting multiple operatives to have multiple ayys in sight before the ambush, trip mines can help, though they can be weird to deal with, remember that any enemy that overwatches won't trigger reaction fire.
I believe it's part of the tutorial, though I think I screwed it up the first couple times. Basically, while still in concealment, have at least one of your squad go into overwatch. Then, attack with one of the other soldiers (say, a grenade to damage multiple ayys). When the ayyys scatter to cover, the overwatching soldier gets a shot without the normal aim penalty (because the overwatch shot is coming from a concealed soldier). That's basically how it works.
There are some subtleties, like not overwatching with the whole squad (other than the soldier who attacks to cause the ayyys to begin their scatter) so you have a reserve to shoot any survivors. Oh, and phantom rangers don't typically take the overwatch shot because they remain in concealment, so don't do that.
Which means you get to scout another trap
Don't set a soldier to get spotted; that'll end poorly. When dealing with concealment overwatch traps, your best bet is to spring them on your turn. Put the soldiers you want into overwatch, then have one soldier take a shot. This'll break concealment and trigger the overwatches once the hostiles run for cover.
I tried this once and it went horribly, everyone missed and then I was powerless to stop the advent from flanking me. Now I just activate them the good old fashioned way so I can still react to where they run.
First, get some people on OW- the best ones could be Sharpshooters and Specialists. If you have Kill zone, use it. Remember, overwatch will not trigger during concealment!! You will either need to strike while it is your turn (best with saturation fire or faceoff, but grenades are great too). If you have proxy mines, USE THEM. If your targets move, they get hurt and automatically break your concealment, closest thing to a Beaglerush Maneuver we can get.
In shorter words, get some people on overwatch and break concealment by firing at an enemy. Concealment overwatches being triggered don't have OW aim penalties.
Don't forget to get extended magazines on your killzone sniper
And don't do what I do and put a phantom ranger as part of your overwatch trap, forgetting that they won't be revealed and will just sit there being useless.
Once you have broken concealment with your main squad, have a concealed ranger scout for enemies and set a trap up in their patrol path.
Overwatch traps as a tactic don't really work when concealed. The best way of setting a trap when already revealed would be to retreat all soldiers just out of vision range and set up overwatch. If the pod is freshly active and have no clear targets they will always advance toward your team, triggering line of sight/overwatch.
Breaking concealment but keeping a Conceal Ranger/Shinobi ahead is another amazing way to handle this same scenario, as you can see and predict which direction the patrol will head and plant your overwatch there.
Breaking the concealment on their turn isn't how you do an overwatch trap. It WAS during pre-release, but they patched it out by adding the 'shoot the guy they find flanked' thing.
