The best and worst heroes to play during Season 36, from top to bottom in our Overwatch Heroes Tier List.
Each new competitive Overwatch season comes with a patch to balance heroes' abilities. Some get stronger, while others are nerfed. But which heroes should you play in September 2022? Here is a tier list of all Overwatch heroes for Season 36 – which hero you should play to carry games, and which you should avoid if you want to escape elo hell.
These heroes are the very best to play in September 2022. The current balance makes them slightly stronger than other heroes on this list, so picking one of those will help you win games. If you know how to play them properly, of course.
The current meta is a fast-paced one. The best heroes to play this season are dive tanks, DPS supports, and hitscan heroes.
For the tanks, Wrecking Ball , Zarya, and D.Va are leading the charge. These heroes work well together, as either Wrecking Ball or D.Va can dive into the enemy team while being protected by Zarya ’s Projected Barrier. Shields are not the biggest trend this season, but that shouldn’t be a problem if your team knows how to control the map and use corners to their advantage.
To keep those tanks alive, Baptiste, Zenyatta , and Lucio are the best support heroes to play during Season 36. All of them have powerful defensive abilities: Baptiste has his Immortality Field, Zenyatta relies on his Transcendence to save his team, and Lucio can drop his Sound Barrier if things go south.
Besides those defensive abilities, these heroes are also able to deal devastating damage to the enemy team. And since the goal of Overwatch is to defeat the enemy team before they kill you, extra damage is always welcome. Baptiste and Zenyatta can pick enemies from afar, while Lucio is a master when it comes to harassing the opponents’ backline.
The best DPS heroes to play in Overwatch Season 36 are Cassidy, Soldier: 76 , and Hanzo. These three are deadly heroes, able to kill anyone on the enemy team in a few shots. They also have great mobility, allowing them to take control of high grounds and prevent their foes from sneaking up on the rest of their team. And if you play Hanzo , the combo of Dragonstrike with Zarya’s Graviton Surge never gets old.
The following heroes may not be as overpowered as the S-tier heroes, but they are still pretty decent in Season 36.
Most tank heroes fall under the A-tier section of this list. If dive is the current meta, Winston doesn’t make it to the top. He is not particularly bad this season, but his spot is often stolen by Wrecking Ball or D.Va.
Sigma and Reinhardt are good alternatives if you need a shield on your team. These tanks are staples in Overwatch games, and you can’t go wrong picking either one of them. They might not shine as much as dive tanks, but they work great paired with Zarya and hitscan heroes.
Roadhog is also a safe pick when it comes to tanks. His high survivability makes him independent enough to bother the enemy team without requiring too much of the support players’ attention. His hook is deadly against squishies, the heroes with 200 HP or less. Roadhog may not be as impactful for the team synergy as other tanks, but his ability to pick enemies and heal himself makes him a reliable hero.
Ana almost made it to the S-tier, but because of the fast-paced gameplay of the heroes on the list above, she falls to the A-tier hero list. She is one of the best support heroes of the game, being able to output large quantities of heal while impacting the enemy team with her Biotic Grenades. Landing a Sleep Dart on an enemy when they use their ultimate ability can win a team fight, so you should never sleep on Ana .
Brigitte is also a great support player, but too dependent on a brawl meta to fit well in the current state of Overwatch. She shines when paired with closed-ranged heroes, as her heal is dependent on her own DPS and only hits teammates close to her. If your team picks a Reinhardt , feel free to play Brigitte. But if everyone goes diving all across the map, you won’t have much of an impact.
The last support joining the A-tier of our Overwatch heroes tier list for September 2022 is Mercy . This hero is not a healing master, but rather enables her teammates. As such, she relies on what the DPS players manage to do: if they perform well, so will Mercy. But if they don’t, Mercy won’t have much of an impact on the game. She is a safe pick to choose, but may not be as useful as the support players from the S-tier.
Ashe barely missed the S-tier list to fall on the A-tier one. Her high mobility and damage output make her a real threat on the battlefield, but her ultimate lacks the impact of a Deadeye or Dragon Strike. She remains a great hero to deal damage to the entire enemy team and B.O.B. is ideal to contest key choke points.
If you don’t feel like playing a hitscan hero this season, Tracer is a great pick. She works really well with all kinds of dive meta, being able to teleport around the map and fall back in a second. Tracer can harass the enemy backline and her mobility makes her hard to stop. Cassidy is one of her greater counters, though, so be careful who is on the enemy team.
B-tier heroes aren’t the best ones out there. But if they are not in their best shape at the moment, they can still be worthy with the right team composition.
Orisa is the only tank hero that doesn’t make it to either the S-tier or A-tier this season. While she is great at bashing enemy shields and poking everything around, she lacks the mobility to keep up with the rest of the team.
Widowmaker and Genji are tricky heroes. In the right hands, they can be the most devastating heroes out there. Which Overwatch player never experienced getting picked by a Widowmaker from afar, or wrecked by a blading Genji ? But if these heroes can be hard to counter, placed in the wrong hands they can be as useless as the bird laying on Bastion’s shoulder.
Junkrat can be great depending on the map. However, you won’t be able to get much value out of his RIP-Tire as hitscan heroes can shoot it before it explodes. Junkrat remains viable if you manage to play properly with corners to spam the enemy shield without crossing the hitscans’ line of sight.
Echo and Doomfist are two heroes that can make or break games. Echo has the ability to copy another hero, landing a devastating Earthshatter into the enemy team or turning into another DPS hero to kill everyone around. Doomfist is more of a flanker, jumping behind the enemy team to kill a support before the fight even begins. However, both have a common counter: Cassidy. And since this hero is in great shape at the moment, having a Cassidy in the enemy team will prevent Echo and Doomfist from thriving in a match.
Moira is not a bad support hero – far from it. But she struggles to find her place in the current meta as the entire team is split up across the map. The goal of this meta is to jump on heroes to secure early picks, and while Moira has great mobility, her healing relies on hitting packed players and fighting in close range to recharge her Biotic Energy.
Now comes the time to unveil which heroes are doing poorly in Season 36. This doesn’t mean you should stop playing these characters, but simply that they are not as strong as others right now. Keep in mind that playing well with one of these heroes is always better than being terrible with a better-balanced hero.
All the heroes from this list are highly dependent on the situation. In defense, they can shine with the proper team composition. But if you play Bastion with Wrecking Ball and D.Va as tanks, you will probably have a hard time staying alive and securing kills.
Just like Bastion, Torbjorn and Symmetra rely on playing around with specific chokes and key points on the map. They need the tanks to lure enemies to their turrets to deal maximum damage and secure kills. Since Season 36 revolves around diving and being aggressive, their defensive playstyle doesn’t fit well in the current meta.
Pharah is having a tough time shining in September 2022. Hitscan heroes are on top of this tier list, with Zenyatta and Baptiste able to help shoot down a flying Pharah. Of course, having a Mercy on her side will help Pharah survive a little longer, but she won’t have enough space to wreak havoc on the enemy team.
The same goes for Reaper . While he can be a devastating force against tanks and a good flanker to pick support heroes, Reaper has too many counters this season. Cassidy can stun him and kill Reaper before he could ever bat an eye. Most of the heroes from the S-tier list can kill him during his Death Blossom, ending Reaper’s killing spree before it even begins.
Sombra and Mei can be effective in some team compositions. They are independent enough to play without shield tanks and bother the enemy team even with no support. But they don’t pack the abilities required to contest the best heroes from this list, especially hitscan heroes who can kill them from a distance.
That wraps up our Overwatch heroes tier list for September 2022! Season 36 will be running until October 4th , so make sure to check out ESTNN next month for a new, updated Overwatch heroes tier list.
