U.S. Special Operations Command’s Armed Overwatch plane program sought a low-cost aircraft that could provide operators with intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and airstrikes in austere combat environments. In 2021, SOCOM awarded a total of $19.2 million to five companies for demonstration prototypes . On July 31, 2022, SOCOM awarded a $3 billion contract to L3Harris Technologies for Armed Overwatch.
Specifically, the Armed Overwatch plane program contract’s maximum ceiling value is $3 billion. A DOD press release published on August 1, 2022 states, “Research, development, test, and evaluation; and procurement funds in the amount of $170,000,000 were obligated at time of the award.” The press release also notes that the contract covers the procurement of up to 75 aircraft, training systems, mission planning systems, support equipment, spares, and logistics support. Period of performance is stated to be from July 2022 until July 2029.
L3Harris collaborated with Air Tractor, Inc. to create the AT-802U Sky Warden for the Armed Overwatch program. Air Tractor is renowned for its single-engine agricultural monoplanes including the AT-802, first flown in 1990. The aircraft’s low-altitude performance saw it later adapted for fire-fighting and combat.
In response to the Air Force’s Light Attack/Armed Reconnaissance program, Air Tractor modified the AT-802 in 2008. The armed version featured armor for the engine and cockpit, a bulletproof windscreen, self-sealing fuel tanks, and structural reinforcements allowing for a payload of 9,000 pounds. Although the Air Force announced that it would not move forward with the LAAR program in 2020, SOCOM’s Armed Overwatch program served as a sort of spiritual successor.
The AT-802U Sky Warden has many features that make it ideal for the Armed Overwatch program. It has a 6-hour loiter with a 200 nautical mile combat radius, and can carry a 6,000-pound flexible combat load-out. L3Harris notes that the Sky Warden leverages the company’s “more than 1.3 million hours of ISR and Strike support and upgrades driven by mission operators.”
L3Harris announced that the prototype demonstrator Sky Warden will be quickly modified into the production configuration for customer weapon system testing in about six months. New Sky Wardens will be produced at Air Tractor’s aircraft manufacturing facility in Olney, Texas and configured at L3Harris’ modification center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. L3Harris notes that the Sky Warden is production-ready with delivery in less than 12 months.

The U.S. Special Operations Command announced on Aug. 1, 2022, the selection of the AT-802U Sky Warden as the winner of the Armed Overwatch program, beating competitors like the AT-6E Wolverine and the MC-145B Wily Coyote. The indefinite quantity, indefinite delivery contract awarded to L3Harris Technologies and Air Tractor includes the delivery of up to 75 aircraft, with an initial award of 170 million USD and a total potential value of up to 3 billion USD.
The aircraft is the militarized variant of the well-known Air Tractor AT-802, commonly used as agricultural aircraft and as firefighting aircraft ( aka the AT-802 Fire Boss ). Among the heavy modifications of this variant, which is already in service in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, are sensors, communications equipment and weapons systems. SOCOM expects an initial operating capability in 2026, with full operating capability following in 2029.
L3Harris says Sky Warden’s name commemorates two best-in-class, multi-mission special operations combat platforms, merging the deep history of the Vietnam era A-1E Sky Raider with the present-day U-28, which uses the callsign “Warden” during combat operations. Sky Warden combines their heritage and capabilities to collapse the stack, providing one aircraft capable of multiple mission roles.
Built on the rugged, reliable Air Tractor AT-802U platform, the company says that thanks to the STOL capability and small support footprint, aircrews will be able to co-locate with the disaggregated ground units they support. Speaking of support, the multi-mission aircraft features, according to the company, great persistence and payload, with a 6-hour loiter at 200 nm combat radius and a 6,000 lb flexible combat load-out.
The fleet of modern multi-mission aircraft will address SOCOM’s need for a deployable, sustainable single-engine fixed-wing, crewed and affordable aircraft system. It will provide close air support, precision strike, armed intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR), strike coordination and forward air controller requirements for use in austere and permissive environments . The aircraft will be also used in irregular warfare operations.
“Armed Overwatch answers a critical need for U.S. Special Operations Command to conduct a wide range of operations globally in support of the National Defense Strategy,” SOCOM Commander Gen. Richard Clarke said in a release. “This rugged, sustainable platform will operate in permissive environments and austere conditions around the world to safeguard our special operations forces on the ground.”
Gen. Clarke told lawmakers last year he envisions four operational squadrons of 15 Armed Overwatch aircraft with one deployed at any given time while the other three train, recover and are maintained at home, and a fifth squadron dedicated to training. This will allow the Air Force to shift its more complex and expensive-to-operate fighter jets from operations in permissive environment like the Middle East.
L3Harris said in the press release that expects to rapidly modify the AT-802U demonstrator into the production configuration and provide for customer weapon system testing in approximately six months. The production of new, fully modified, Armed Overwatch mission-configured aircraft will finally begin in 2023. Air Tractor will build the base aircraft at its facilities in Olney, Texas, while L3Harris will modify them to the final configuration at its facilities in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Six new aircraft will be delivered under the low-rate initial production Lot 1.
“I think we can do [the program] at relatively low risk based on what we’ve seen from the vendors who have indicated that they intend to bring platforms to demonstrate for us in the coming months,” AFSOC commander Lt. Gen. James Slife said earlier this year. “The whole reason we’re doing this is because the National Defense Strategy talks about the need to do cost-effective [counter-violent extremist organization] operations, cost-effective irregular warfare.”
Even if the Armed Overwatch aims to replace the U-28 Draco , is seems that even after the Sky Warden is delivered, SOCOM might still need the U-28 to provide ISR for some type of operations like search and rescue and humanitarian relief.

Your competitive skill rating is displayed as a number from 0 to 5000 , 5000 being the highest possible skill rating.
You also get a rank , based on your skill rating. There are 8 ranks in Overwatch:
Typically, you earn about 20-30 SR after a win. And lose around 20-30 SR after a loss.
The amount you gain or lose depends on your performance .
And if you’re on a winning streak , that signals the game that your skill rating is lower than your actual skill level, and you will earn more SR per win.
The only official stats available is this post from Jeff Kaplan , lead designer of Overwatch, in February of 2018:
Bottom 8% of the total players belong to Bronze . The bottom 8% to 29% are Silver .
And Gold makes up the biggest portion of the pie at 32%, which is bottom 29% to top 39% .
Top 39% to 14% are Platinum players. And top 14% to 4% are Diamond players.
The most prestige ranks are Master who are top 4% to 1% , and Grandmaster who represent the top 1% of all players.
Silver, gold and platinum add up to 78% – more than 3/4 of all players.
Each season, you need to complete 5 placement matches for a role(Tank, DPS or Support) in order to receive your skill rating and rank.
Then, you will receive a rank for that role only . To get ranks in other roles, you’ll have to complete 5 placement matches for each role:
Before you can play placement matches, your account needs to be at least level 25 .
You get XP points by playing Quick Play , Play vs AI , Practice vs AI , Arcade , Custom Games or Competitive Play .
The amount of XP points are based on these factors:
You earn different amount of XP for these game modes:
If you abandon matches at a high rate among your last 20 games, you will get -75% XP penalty temporarily. So do not abandon matches too much if you’re trying to level up as fast as possible.
If you’re in a group, you will get 20% extra XP at the end of each match. So try to party with your friends, or find a group with Find Group in the game:
You also get extra 1,500 XP for your first win of the day – so try to win at least 1 game everyday.
Here is a list of XP needed to level up for the first 25 levels:
Role queue is the current system of Overwatch, where each team must pick 2 tanks , 2 DPS and 2 supports .
Thus, players must pick one or more roles before queueing up for a competitive match or quick match. Once you find a match, you’re locked into a role, and you’re forced to pick a hero for that role only.
When you reach the skill rating for the next highest rank, you immediately get promoted:
Silver, Gold, Platinum and Diamond players do not immediately rank down as soon as their skill rating drops below their current rank.
Instead, they get 5 matches to recover their SR back to their original rank. If their SR is still below their origin
