Skirmishes while you wait are a thing of the past after Wednesday's Overwatch 1.43 PTR patch.
There's a lot about Overwatch that has changed since it first released several years ago. Then there are certain things about Overwatch that haven't changed. If you're waiting to get thrown into a match, you're going to get put in a giant skirmish lobby. That's just the way things have been. However, that's finally about to change. The Overwatch 1.43 PTR patch is changing up how players wait for their next game to start, a change that all Overwatch players can look forward to in the future.
Those on the Overwatch Public Test Realm looking to jump into a game will now find a feature called "While You Wait." Instead of simply jumping into a Skirmish, players will now have options in front of them. While waiting in a queue, players can now select whether to jump into a Practice Range, Skirmish, Deathmatch, or Custom Game. If you're in a group, the group leader will determine what to do.
Beyond this, there are a slew of balance changes incoming. Armor damage will be reduced from three to five across the board. As for individual character changes, let's take a look at what players can expect:
The big takeaways are that defensive shields are taking a huge hit here, with Orisa, Reinhardt, and Sigma specifically targeted. The biggest loser with these changes is Moira, who has been many players' healer of choice with the many, many nerfs issued to Mercy over the years. It's not all nerfs, though. D.Va, Genji, and Zarya are getting some noteworthy buffs to either help enhance some of their best moves or round them out into a better overall package.
Overwatch also has a parade of bug fixes to dish out. To see what those are, visit the Overwatch forums . The PTR changes are live now on PC. Look for them to hit the full Overwatch game on all platforms in the days ahead. In the meantime, Mercy's Recall Challenge is underway.
Ozzie has been playing video games since picking up his first NES controller at age 5. He has been into games ever since, only briefly stepping away during his college years. But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Because what are video games if you can't enjoy a good story with a fresh Cherry Coke?

Developer Comments: Previously, it was difficult for players to keep track of the ever-growing collection of player-created game modes. The Custom Game Browser’s new tabs give these modes a chance to shine. The Popular tab shows off some of the most-played modes as well as modes that have started to trend. The Favorites tab lets you build a personal collection of modes – just select the star icon next to any mode you’d like to see in this list. The Recent tab shows modes that you have recently played. Finally, the All Games tab gives you the standard, familiar list of lobbies. We’ve also added the ability to search for lobbies by share code.

In order to help identify modes, we’ve added a new Mode Name setting right above the Description in Custom Game Settings. This Mode Name will be used to represent modes in the Custom Game Browser tabs. Creators are encouraged to reupload their modes with Mode Name filled out. (If it isn’t filled out, the share code itself is displayed instead.)

Since these new features are being used by the public for the first time, we may need to make adjustments to how the Popular tab chooses its modes. If you notice that the Popular tab isn’t showing the modes that you might expect, please be patient with us as we tune the feature to present the best collection of modes that we can.

We’re excited about the possibilities these new features will bring to Custom Games, and we’ll be watching and listening to your feedback to improve the Custom Game Browser experience.

The new PTR update has more than just Doomfist.

A new Overwatch update has been released on the Public Test Realm today, and Blizzard has released the full patch notes. Its primary addition is undoubtedly that of Doomfist, the game's next playable character .
Coinciding with his announcement and release on the PTR, Blizzard released the video above, in which director Jeff Kaplan explains the general design of the character. This includes the potential use of Doomfist as a character who can flank and dive into groups of enemies, and how his passive--which gives him shields by dealing ability damage--allows him to survive. Sadly, there's no explanation for why he isn't voiced by Terry Crews .

The remainder of the patch largely carries over other, previously announced changes that were live on the PTR , though they are significant. Blizzard is looking to avoid having players receive duplicates in Loot Boxes as frequently. This, of course, means you won't receive Credits as often, so the amount of Credits handed out in Loot Boxes is being increased. The end result, Blizzard claims, is that "should be earning just as many Credits, if not slightly more, from loot boxes as you did prior to these changes." Players will receive five Loot Boxes when they log in to the PTR to help test the adjustments, but as with other PTR earnings, none of this will transfer to the live game.
The other big addition is the revamped Highlights system. With this, you can finally manually save gameplay clips, and your top five clips will be retained for a full 24 hours. Those playing on PC also have the option of saving clips at a higher graphical quality than their computer can actually run the game, allowing you to record 4K/60 FPS video while playing on low-end hardware.
Other changes in this patch include a way to create customized reticles, fixes for various bugs, and the removal of the Projectile Speed and Projectile Gravity options for characters that don't fire projectiles. You can check out the full PTR patch notes here . The PTR is only available on PC; there's no word yet on when this update will launch in full on all platforms.

A new Overwatch patch is in development and now available for testing! To share your feedback or report any issues, please post in the PTR Feedback or PTR Bug Report forums.
Please note that the below patch notes only include changes currently available for testing on the PTR. While many of these changes may also be available on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in a future patch, the PTR is PC-only and only reflects changes coming specifically to that platform.
We will be introducing Hero Pools starting in Season 21 of Competitive Play. Much like Map Pools, rather than having all heroes available for play at all times, a weekly changing list of heroes will be available. The list will include the vast majority of the hero roster, with only a few being excluded during any given week. We think this feature will help keep Competitive Play interesting, as team compositions will change more frequently during a season.
It is important to note that Hero Pools is a new feature that may not last past this initial season. Throughout the season, we will be adjusting the types of Hero Pools available. In addition, it is possible we will also adjust the frequency with which they change.
Developer comment: New stuns will only replace existing stuns if their duration is longer than the time remaining on the current stun. For example, a Flashbang stun will not apply to someone who has just been Earthshattered. We use the minimum guaranteed stun time for Ana sleep, which right now is 1.5 seconds (time to fall down + time to stand back up).
Developer Comment: Variable manipulation and flow control actions previously caused high server load, so we spent some time making them more lightweight. When combined with the new Disable Inspector Recording action, these changes may result in significant reduction in server load for Workshop modes that rely on heavy variable logic, particularly those that manipulate arrays. In light of these changes, we’re removing the restriction that requires a Wait action before a Loop, though be advised that excessive looping in a single frame can still cause server load issues, especially when using actions other than those listed above. Note that setting or modifying multiple player variables with a single action (by providing an array of players) is not optimized, nor is setting or modifying a variable that is ever used by a Chase action. Finally, keep in mind that some values (such as the Ray Cast values) can cause quite a bit of server load on their own, even if using the optimized actions above.
Maybe give Brig a 10HPS self heal, after not taking damage for 3sec.
Well thanks for ruining the game with hero pools. Looks like dps queues are going to skyrocket
I am glad to see that Hero Pools will be tested in the PTR prior to the start of Season 21.
Yay the Wrecking Ball voice line bug was fixed!
I’m also excited to see the new workshop maps!
What made the team decide on these 4 heroes for the first week? Is there a reasoning for it? or was it randomly chosen?
I’m questioning whether they would actually dump it if it doesn’t go well though. They have a track record of just putting things on live even if it sucked on PTR
I can’t wait to see what the amazing workshop community can do with the new maps and the new optimized actions.
I have a feeling this will go live for season 21 as they intend, but by having on the PTR we’ll be able to give initial feedback which will help them make better decisions on when to rotate heroes to make season 21 more consistent.
And I can safely say unlike my role queue fiasco last August, that PTR Competitive is not connected to your actual live hidden MMR. But please try not to throw too much though…
Yes, you asked brig buffs where she doesn’t need any as of right now.
this PTR patch shows the dedication of the team, thank you thank you!!
It is important to note that Hero Pools is a new feature that may not last past this initial season.
Please make the Map Pool weekly like Hero pools.
