What's the difference, what has paladins done better then overwatch, what has overwatch done better then paladins, etc... etc...
Honestly, I'm a bit of an Overwatch fanboy as I imagine a lot of us are on this reddit, but I just feel like Paladins is awful compared to OW. I really tried to give it an honest shot, but it just didn't do it for me at all. So just as a point of reference, I have about 100-150 hours playing OW probably, and about 5-10 playing Paladins, so my comparisons will be based on that.
Matches in Overwatch feel much more dynamic, even though the basic premise of each match is about the same.
In Paladins, I honestly felt like every game is basically this: a) zerg the control point, b) team fight/skirmish near control point, c) one side wipes on said control point, d) the winning team walks with the siege tank to the door, e) team tries to do a little damage to door, but falls back when enemy team arrives as it's not worth it to team fight near the enemy team spawn, f) heal/set-up at next control point g) rinse/repeat until the base falls down.
2. The card system is a let-down. I don't know the game well enough to know what cards are best for each hero. But even after just playing a little bit, you kind of feel nerfed if you don't randomly pull the cards you want.
3. The heroes in Paladins have lots of various movement abilities--some of these abilities are fun, but it leads to games that feel like extremely fast bunnies bounding around all over the place. The movement abilities in Overwatch feel a lot better and more..."grounded"...for lack of a better word.
4. Heroes felt very generic to me compared to OW. I didn't feel an affinity with any of them in my brief time, whereas in OW I would be excited to try a new character I hadn't played before. All the weapons in Paladins feel pretty much the same--this could be due to my relatively short time playing it, but meh, first impressions are important too. In OW, I really can't think of two heroes where even the act of shooting their primary feels the same as another hero. For instance, Tracer/Mcree/Soldier are all hit-scan, but the way each of them play feels really very different.
5. There are two maps (I think) in Paladins. I don't even know why they included two. They feel pretty much identical both in gameplay and style. Overwatch's maps are extremely unique in terms of style, and I'd argue in terms of gameplay as well.
All in all, I wasn't a fan of Paladins and I haven't had the urge to fire it up even once since the OW beta went down. I have really high hopes for it too. I'm a fan of Smite and Tribes, so I was pretty excited to see what Hi-Rez would bring, but so far, it hasn't been much.
In fairness though, I think Paladins is WAY earlier in development than OW, so time will tell.
Totally agree with the 4. Overwatch maps are amazing and are just awesome places to be whilst Paladins maps feel like they have been made in paint.
Not having played OW, I can say that Paladins has been very enjoyable. That being said though, I do agree with the points you made.
I don't know if you've played recently though as the card draw is no longer random during matches. You pre-select 3 cards from each tier and select them as you level up which is far better than when the system was random. I actually found it was pretty easy to get a lot of the main cards for the heroes, but the card system just seems dated and disappointing as it always takes a lot of time to get the ones the community regard as "good".
This is also the problem I have with games like Dirty bomb. They have the same "card" system which they call Loadouts and are actually tough to collect. I love that in OW you pay upfront and get the heroes and a set number of skills which is all you have to work with.
There's just a certain relief that comes with knowing that you don't have to worry about not having platinum, top tier or whatever cards that augment your skills in an advantageous way that will take weeks to months to collect.
The card system is a good thing. It is a good approach and is getting better from patch to patch.
Also what you say is exactly how the devs said they wanted to develop this game. Gameplay first adding all things just time after time.
I bet at release time Paladins is great.
I see some sort of rage here, let´s be honest, I played both games and I have some opinions to share.
The Card systems of Paladins is really fun, not for the fact to mix hearthstone, no, but the option make a variation of skills, this is the best thing in Paladins IMHO, and not exist anything like this in overwatch.
Paladins have big maps, ok, lack of some hype, true, but you can mount, and mouting is always fun.
About visual experience, despite both be cartoonish, Overwatch is way better and eye-canding that Paladins is.
Gameplay of both is fluid, which I have no complaints, yes, not headshot at Paladins but IMO it not ruins the experience.
the main problem in Paladins is due the fact it´s beta. When Overwatch came open for beta, the game already well polish with a bunch of maps and option, constantly and and fast fix for issues found, which I don´t see in Paladins.
Overwatch is better but Paladins have It´s good point IMHO
OVERWATCH is a true FPS with only MOBA heroes style. PALADINS is a MOBA with just a FPS aiming style
That's the impression I get from Paladins, it seems more on par with Battleborn than it does with Overwatch
late fucking reply, but paladins isn't a moba
it's a shooter and i think only has one gamemode, which is payload
Card systems can be fun. They don't belong in FPS titles however. That was the one factor that kept me from actually liking Titanfall - Burn Cards were one of the most idiotic things to include in a game, although in fairness if burn cards were permanent rather than one-offs I think they'd have been much more interesting. I think they can have a place in the genre, but you can't have them be unlocked over time or whatnot. It'll divide players too heavily and really make the game come off as pay to win when you can buy cards from the shop.
What's all this about card systems in FPSs? Can someone explain what it is?
In Titanfall I was always far too conservative with using burn cards, so they just kind of piled up till the inventory was maxed.
Though what turned me off from the game was the amount of times one can die in about a second at long range to a guy you either didn't see or is in a difficult area to access quickly.
Doesn't help that this is very possible with the all-rounder weapon, though I miss the fun maneuvering and Titan mechanic the game offers.
I much prefer Overwatch and TF2 where most of the time you see and have time to react to an enemy before they kill you and enemies further away typically can't kill you quickly barring specialists.
Overwatch is better in every aspect.. literally every aspect and yes I played both.
Maybe but that does not mean it is a bad thing. I only tried Paladins and i loved the game. I believe Overwatch will be better because it will be different
Essentially Paladins is going to air more to the traditional moba side of this new breed of FPS-MOBA games with xp and different build paths each time you level up, I actually think this is a really good idea in theory if handled well; it gives some extra depth which I don't see as a bad thing at all.
Unfortunately from my admittedly very limited experience it has an almost Hearthstone (it is also F2P) like RNG component which I see as being very hard to balance.
according to this guy they removed the rng thing
Having played both, they don't compare very well. Overwatch is very much an objective-based FPS; Paladins is very much a first-person MOBA.
u/spacecatsix 's comment is pretty much how I feel about it as well.
Paladins is a hot pile of uninspired garbage with possibly the worst fucking character and map design out of some random free mobile game.
Overwatch has Widowmaker's ass so it's already light years ahead on that perk alone, and it's got lists more.
I loved playing OW during the free weekend.
Paladins put me to sleep after the first game.
It's not even fair to compare them. Overwatch is just in a massively different league than Paladins, they aren't even competitors. Overwatch has no reason to even acknowledge or register Paladins as a threat.
Some of the paladins designs are so ripped from OW it's not even funny. A dwarf that builds turrets.... a guy with a projected shield and a charge attack.... a mech with dual chain-cannons that can hover.... like, come on.
Tried paladins after a kmomth of ow beta... game cant even compare imo. In paladins projectiles are massive, theres no headshots, the maps are very open and uninteresting. In ow most projectiles take a lot of skill to aim. Compae hanzo to cassie for instance. Paladins just felt really spammy compared to overwatch. Overwatch's maps and characters felt way better in terms of their art style and overall design.
OW just feels like a much more rewarding, skill based game to me
another point is the classes/roles, Overwatch have it well defined, which is not the same in Paladins.

So… I wanted to check out Paladins just to see what they offer compared to Overwatch and why everyone keeps saying Overwatch is better…and I have to say after checking out Paladins, I am disappointed in Overwatch.
I used to just laugh at Paladins because it looked so bad, but after checking it out Im am so impressed with everything they offer for a free to play game
Overwatch is missing some basic things that Paladins can offer
We NEED to see our team (especially our healers) through the walls and at the VERY LEAST we need new chevrons.
You can see your team through the walls no matter what class you play
A loadout option for the overall hero pool and then individual hero loadout options. (and ways to sort cosmetics)
I haven’t even talked about the heroes or the hero balance yet.
There is a version on Hanzo in Paladins which has the lunge and rapid fire but it better than in Overwatch. There is even poisons, someone who uses a pet, a flamethrower, a crossbows, and even a hero that rides on a permanent mount as part of the hero… all things we’ve asked for in Overwatch.
Also, someone has a Flashbang that actually works like a Flashbang should, it blinds the player for a very short time.
Even though Paladins has healers, there are no health packs because everyone has a health regen after being out of combat for so long.
Im very surprised that Overwatch can’t offer these things 2 years in. I mean… Moira still has a victory pose bug on console where there is no liquid in her flask.
I am just mind blown with all the work that has been put into Paladins that Overwatch can’t even come close to
Orisa doesn’t even have a HUD shield timer yet…
If you are frustrated with Overwatch, I recommend checking out Paladins. You might be surprised.
Ive made posts about Overwatch and things that it could do to improved but there is never any dev feedback… nothing but silence.
If they need some ideas, they should take a look here:
What features would you like to see in Overwatch that the game should have had by now?
There are 534 replies with an estimated read time of 75 minutes .
Paladins, less of a Budget with all the fixes.
Even Comp in Paladins is taken more seriously.
Honestly. I feel bad for saying bad things about that game without even checking it out. Im honestly mind blown with everything that game has to offer compared to a giant billion dollar company… its laughable
Agreed, I was very surprised by how much I actually liked the game. It’s fun and have several things that I wish Overwatch had. The fact that it’s free to play and only offer cosmetic items for real $$$ is a plus. Overwatch still plays smoother in my opinion, but Paladins is much more fun in it’s diversity on how each Hero/Champion plays.
Exactly. I mean, sure it is missing the polish that Overwatch has, but overall, I think every hero is MUCH more fun. The supports are 100% more fun. Im just sitting here in shock… I can’t believe how much I liked it
I also can’t believe all the missing features and bugs that Overwatch has in comparison.
I would have much rather payed for new heroes in Overwatch if it meant we got the things Paladins has
Paladins has become a great game. Ive always found overwatch to be more exciting with powerful ultimates, the fast paced nature, and higher skill cap heroes. It allows for more epic plays and outplay capabilities. But the direction overwatch is headed with the addition of Moira and Brigitte where these low skill cap heroes can outplay a 500 hour experienced genji by left clicking, just kinda ruins what made overwatch better than paladins in the first place. I’ve been playing more paladins recently and the game is actually more balanced than overwatch right now.
From my limited first try today, I agree 110%
Having more fun with more diverse heroes and it seems to be better balanced.
Ive played comp in paladins this season because i wanted the Vivian skin.
In comp each team gets to ban 2 champs before picking.
The way picking a champ in comp goes is that one team will pick 2. Then the other picks 2. And back and forth until everyone has selected a champ. One character cant be on both teams on comp which is really unique. It adds counterplay from the start of a match.
Also to add. There are 5 tiers in bronze to diamond. And you can jump tiers if your doing exceptionally well. For example when I got promoted I went from Silver 2 to Gold 4.
You can see your team mates through walls though…?
There’s a chevron over each of your team mates when there’s at least one wall between you and them…?
He means like the full body yes you can see the chevron but you can’t tell which ally that is just that there is one there
You can see your team mates through walls though…?
In literally the most unhelpful way ever
I think being able to see full silhouettes at all times would be too much visual clutter.
Something that was clearly priority 1 for OW, as your teams health bars aren’t even pasted to your screen.
That used to bother me, but now I just find the clutter annoying in other games.
So, because this post begs this question: Why are you still playing OW?
I think being able to see full silhouettes at all times would be too much visual clutter.
It’s your own personal HUD, just don’t turn it on if it’s too much clutter for you
So, because this post begs this question: Why are you still playing OW?
Honestly, because all my friends still play Overwatch but even as I type this, most of the people I play with are downloading Paladins so we will see how much longer I can hold on to Overwatch.
The only other thing about Overwatch that I like is the lore but I dont even know when we had the last comic or short and in 2 years the story hasn’t moved forward in 2 years soo…
I’ve tried Paladins a few times for a while. Overwatch is just far more appealing to me tbh.
Why? Is it because of the lore and setting? Like less fantasy kinda thing?
I played Paladins for a while, I actually liked it
I do think they got some things very right, and especially in regards to hero leveling and rewards - I also enjoyed their competitive experience a lot more because of the banning and alternating between teams for picks. It meant to play comp in Paladins you really need to know how to play multiple heroes
OW is still my favorite, though I admit they could take some notes from Paladins. I play them both
I say all of the heroes in paladins are playable unlike overwatch where only a few heroes are playable
So I actually have the paladins founders pack (check my very first post)
I will be sure to check it out! (eventually. Anniversary starts tomorrow )
