"Justice ain't gonna dispense itself."
Ammo : 6 Rounds : 1 McCree fires off a round from his trusty six-shooter. He can fan the Peacekeeper's hammer to swiftly unload the entire chamber.
Cooldown : 8 Seconds McCree dives in the direction he's moving, effortlessly reloading his Peacekeeper in the process.
Cooldown : 10 Seconds McCree heaves a blinding grenade that explodes shortly after it leaves his hand. The blast staggers enemies in a small radius.
Duration : 6 Seconds Focus. Mark. Draw. McCree takes a few precious moments to aim; when he's ready to fire, he shoots every enemy in his line of sight. The weaker his targets are, the faster he'll line up a killshot.
Armed with his Peacekeeper revolver, the outlaw Jesse McCree doles out justice on his own terms. McCree had already made a name for himself as a member of the notorious Deadlock Gang, which trafficked in illicit weapons and military hardware throughout the American Southwest, when he and his associates were busted in an Overwatch sting operation. With his expert marksmanship and resourcefulness, he was given the choice between rotting in a maximum-security lockup and joining Blackwatch, Overwatch's covert ops division. He chose the latter. Although he was initially cynical, he came to believe that he could make amends for his past sins by righting the injustices of the world. McCree appreciated the flexibility afforded to the clandestine Blackwatch, unhindered by bureaucracy and red tape. But as Overwatch's influence waned, rogue elements within Blackwatch sought to bring down the organization and turn it to their own ends. Wanting no part of the infighting, McCree set off alone and went underground. He resurfaced several years later as a gunslinger for hire. But while McCree's talents are sought after by parties great and small, he fights only for causes he believes are just.

Blizzard and the Overwatch developers have announced it is changing the name of the hero formerly known as McCree. The hero was named after Blizzard employee Jesse McCree, who was previously lead designer on Diablo 4 but is no longer at the company .
In a statement on the official Overwatch Twitter account, the developers announced that it will change McCree's name to "something that better represents what Overwatch stands for." Furthermore, the developers announced that going forward in-game characters will no longer be named after real employees.
McCree's name was taken directly from Blizzard developer Jesse McCree. However, McCree was one of three senior Blizzard employees no longer working at the company following California's lawsuit against Blizzard for widespread gender discrimination. When reached for comment, Activision Blizzard declined to specify whether McCree left the company or was fired.
Jesse McCree was a well-known senior developer, but in the ensuing investigations since the Activision Blizzard lawsuit, revealed that McCree was part of the "Cosby Crew" a group of developers who would host alcohol-fueled parties in the so-called "Cosby Suite."
The decision to change the character McCree's name is not the first instance of this happening in a Blizzard game following the lawsuit. A World of Warcraft NPC named after Blizzard developer Alex Afrasiabi also received a name change after it was revealed that Afrasiabi was also part of the Cosby Suite crew, and was specifically named in California's lawsuit for sexual harassment. Blizzard fired Afrasiabi in 2020 following an internal review of his actions.
Overwatch says there was a planned in-game story event scheduled for September that prominently featured McCree. But to integrate the character's name change into the story arc, the event has been delayed, and instead a new FFA map will be available this September.
The decision to no longer name characters after real-life developers will "help reinforce that we're building a fictional universe that is unmistakably different from the real world and better illustrates that the creation of OVerwatch is truly a team effort," the developers say.
You can read IGN's own extensive investigation into the working conditions at Blizzard , particularly for women and women of color whom the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing say were systematically denied equal pay and opportunity while facing sexual harassment from their peers and management.

The in-game McCree has been a core part of Overwatch since its launch

Jesse McCree, a character in Blizzard's Overwatch game, will be renamed in the wake of fallout over sexual harassment allegations against the company.
The in-game McCree, a revolver-toting cowboy character, was named after a real-life Blizzard staff member.
In August, he and two other executives left the company without explanation.
In a statement, the Overwatch team said it was "necessary to change the name... to something that better represents what Overwatch stands for".
"Going forward, in-game characters will no longer be named after real employees," it promised.
But the Overwatch developers did not reveal what the character's new name would be.
Overwatch is one of the best-known examples of the hero shooter genre, with a cast of characters each with a unique identity and set of abilities.
McCree remains a fan favourite as one of the game's launch characters, and is deeply tied to its back story.
On top of being a playable character, he appears in connected comic books, a high-budget six-minute short animated film, and as merchandise, including an action figure.
However, the real-life Mr McCree after whom the character is named, was allegedly aware of the infamous "Cosby suite" detailed in the sexual harassment lawsuit filed in the state of California in July. Mr McCree is not personally cited in the lawsuit.
The suite was named after actor Bill Cosby, who was convicted of sexual assault, then had his conviction overturned, years after those photos were taken.
Gaming news site Kotaku obtained photos it said showed the inside of the suite, which it reported appears to show a group of executives, including Mr McCree, posing with a photograph of Mr Cosby.
Shortly afterwards, Mr McCree and two other senior staff left Blizzard , though the company did not give any reason for their sudden departure. Mr McCree has not issued any comment on the matter.
There had already been some criticism from the Overwatch community about the continued use of the name McCree for the in-game character.
Announcing the decision to change the name, the Overwatch team did not reference Mr McCree or the harassment allegations against the company. Instead, in a Twitter post, the firm wrote that the change was about "how we best live up to our values" including "inclusivity, equity and hope".
"We realise that any change to such a well-loved and central hero in the game's fiction will take time to roll out correctly, and we'll share updates as this work progresses," it said.
As a result, it was delaying a "narrative arc" planned to begin in September, of which McCree was a central part, it said.
"We will be more thoughtful and discerning about adding real-world references in future," it said.
Earlier this week, the state of California expanded its legal action against Activision Blizzard, apparently redefining its terms to cover temporary or contract workers as well as employees.
But it also accused Activision Blizzard of interfering with its investigation, alleging, among other things, that human resources personnel shredded documents related to the probe.
Activision Blizzard firmly denied those claims.
