Overwatch Contenders was an international esports league for Overwatch organized by Blizzard Entertainment from 2017 to 2024. It acted as the development league for the Overwatch League and had seven regions, each with different formats and rules.
Overwatch contenders is sort of the "minor league" for the Overwatch League, where up and coming talent get to prove their abilities, and get signed as an to an OWL team in the future. However, since OWL hasn't come out yet, the previous overwatch contenders seasons (seasons 1 and 0) was the major league for NA and EU competition.
