Blizzard releases a long-awaited update for its hero-shooter Overwatch 2 that nerfs six characters and brings Mei back into the fold.
Overwatch 2 's long-awaited November update is finally available, addressing hero balance concerns by nerfing six characters and bringing fan favorite Damage hero Mei back into the fold. Blizzard had originally planned to release the big Overwatch 2 November update on November 15 , but it had to delay the patch at the last minute due to unforeseen technical difficulties. Blizzard then promised that the update would arrive on November 17, and it held true to its word.
Overwatch 2 players may be most interested in the nerfs that have come as part of the latest update. D.Va, Zarya, Genji, Junkrat, Sombra, and Kiriko have all been nerfed. Specifics of each nerf can be found in the patch notes (scroll down to see the full notes), but it's safe to say that the Zarya nerf will be most relevant to players. After the update, Zarya's bubble will last 2 seconds (down from 2.5 seconds), and the bubble cooldown has been increased from 10 seconds to 11. While this may not seem that significant, it could drastically change how Zarya is played in Overwatch 2 moving forward.
There have been many calls for Blizzard to nerf Damage hero Genji since Overwatch 2 's launch, and the studio has done that now as well. Genji players should note that after the update, the cyborg ninja will have his maximum ammo reduced from 30 to 24 and his damage output will be reduced from 29 to 27. Of course, it's always possible that Blizzard will decide to tweak the heroes further, so fans should keep that in mind.
Besides the nerfs, the new Overwatch 2 update's most notable change is bringing Mei back to the roster of playable characters. Mei was removed due to bugs involving her Ice Wall ability , but it seems those issues have since been resolved. Blizzard has disabled three heroes since Overwatch 2 's early access launch next month, but hopefully the developers are able to avoid that drastic measure in future.
One hero that fans were worried was at risk at being removed from the game was Support hero Brigitte. Overwatch 2 players discovered a bug that made it so Brigitte's shield never broke . Luckily, that bug has been fixed in this latest update, along with a host of other technical issues that have been plaguing the game. The live service nature of Overwatch 2 and the fact that it will have frequent updates indefinitely means that problems are going to arise every now and again, but hopefully the game is able to avoid any truly serious issues moving forward.
Here are the full Overwatch 2 patch notes for the update released on November 17:
D.Va felt too deadly after the last round of changes given how resilient she can be with her improved Defense Matrix.
Early player sentiment predicted Zarya as one of the weakest solo tanks in 5v5, although her high damage potential and barrier uptime have proven to be extremely effective. For opponents, feedback has indicated this can feel as though Zarya has very limited windows of vulnerability, which feels difficult to deal with when combined with her ramping damage potential.
These changes will reduce the barrier uptime, making it slightly more difficult for her to gain energy and will provide enemies with more time to deal damage to her.
Genji has greatly benefited from the move to 5v5. Changing to a single Tank and the reduction of crowd control has removed a lot of obstacles for Genji. However, he hasn’t received tuning updates since he wasn’t actively in the meta until launch—an intentional decision based on our general preference to avoid preemptive adjustments when possible. These changes will bring Genji more in line with the other flanking damage heroes like Tracer and Reaper.
With Sombra’s rework, she gained a lot more damage to help account for the reduced ability lockout duration of Hack. This has proven to be too deadly for a flanker with easy access to the enemy backlines, especially in 5v5.
She can also no longer channel hack on an already hacked target as feedback indicated the reduced cooldown combined with hacking from stealth proved to be too frustrating for many players. This is essentially a per-target cooldown that enables Hack to keep its current 4-second cooldown for potentially hacking multiple targets.
This invulnerability window is primarily intended to help avoid instantly dying to something unseen after teleporting through walls, but it ended up being a little too long and led to some confusion while shooting at Kiriko.
Overwatch 2 is available now in early access for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.

Overwatch 2 launched with its share of bugs, including server-side glitches, account merge issues and some balance-breaking abilities.
Overwatch 2 brought the next iteration of the game to fans with a host of updates including cross-platform play across all consoles, new characters, and new ways to earn cosmetic upgrades. The new version was not without hiccups, however, and many bugs crept up quickly as players got their hands on the game.
Many minor bugs were quickly hotfixed out of the game, but game-breaking glitches soured the experience for a host of players. Experienced fans and new players alike ran afoul of some major Overwatch 2 bugs, not all of which have been corrected even a full month after launch.
Unexpected server errors often plague multiplayer game launches, and stress testing rarely replicates the strain of a live environment. When the sequel to Overwatch went live, it delivered a host of server problems. Live Overwatch 2 server crashes caused players to disconnect or find themselves in seemingly endless queues as matches failed to launch properly. Hotfixes and updates reduced much of the strain, but this issue persists at times.
One massive bug took this a bit further. Players who didn’t have the latest drivers or had hardware conflicts within their PC systems experienced random reboots of their entire computer system when playing Overwatch 2 . Blizzard offered to diagnose these issues for players willing to upload a Direct X diagnostic file, and many conflicts have since been resolved.
One of the biggest promises made by developers in the run-up to Overwatch 2 was that players would keep all unlocked heroes, skins, cosmetics, and similar upgrades earned in the first game. This put a large strain on the game’s creators to ensure each and every item transferred properly between accounts.
Unfortunately, the strain on the merger system left many console players without access to these unlockables. Queue lengths for Overwatch 2 merge requests still vary between 900 and 90,000 without rhyme or reason, but Battle.net feels confident no players will lose progression. It may simply take time to sort out the remaining accounts.
Players may find themselves locked out of playable characters for reasons other than account merge, however. This big bug prevents even older characters from making the lineup. Those just starting the game may find themselves unable to access original Overwatch heroes , including Bastion, Genji, Mei, and Symmetra.
New players to the game have to complete challenges to unlock these characters, while older players should get them as part of the merge. Those who have earned but not unlocked them should try rebooting, attempting to merge again, and relaunching the game. Failing that, a support ticket may be in order.
Players merging their accounts got to keep previously earned coins in legacy form, allowing them to unlock additional skins from Overwatch from the outset. Unfortunately, a bug in Overwatch 2 chat led to players who were typing messages accidentally purchasing skins through a combination of spacebar and mouse placement.
Players can quickly, accidentally, and completely unintentionally purchase skins while trying to communicate with friends before a match. Blizzard noted that it does not offer refunds for purchases of this nature. Console players using controllers are likely unaffected by this bug.
Account bugs are often huge, but those that prevent games from completing are just as annoying. Some players found themselves stuck in Overwatch 2 spawn rooms , unable to leave the room while the Overtime timer failed to complete. A built-in clock prevents matches from lasting more than two hours before the game forces a timeout.
Players stuck in never-ending matches have only two choices. They can wait out the hour before the match gets canceled or risk the Overwatch leaver penalty by quitting. Blizzard notes they have tackled the problem on the server side, and it should no longer appear in regular matches.
The new ranked competitive system in Overwatch 2 does away with SR calculations and promotes players across ranks based on a record of seven wins or 20 losses. Players beginning matches with their friends at the start of the season could often find themselves stuck in Overwatch 2 ’s Bronze 5 , the lowest tier, without advancing alongside others with the exact same win-loss record. This was another server-side bug that made it to the live launch.
Blizzard has since patched the ranking system, helping ensure players receive appropriate promotions between levels. Players affected by the bug should find themselves in the appropriate tier in short order.
Balance is critical for games that offer competitive play and e-sports support. Blizzard has always taken an ever-evolving approach to balance, adjusting characters as needed between competitive seasons with occasional hotfixes for bugs and exploits. An example of this was how Torbjörn and Bastion were removed from play early on due to bugs with their abilities.
This temporary removal left fans without the ability to rank up competitively using two of the game’s most popular DPS characters. Fixes that prevented multiple activations of their abilities toned down these two characters and saw them return to competitive play.
Two other DPS characters have since displayed game-changing, if not game-ending, bugs. Players discovered that the hacker Sombra can teleport inside the payload. This makes her invulnerable while still being able to attack players and launch her ultimate. Overwatch hero Mei is on hiatus from competitive play until November 15th, as a bug with her ice wall causes glitches with terrain and affects player movement in unintended ways.
It’s not just a balance issue when a character becomes invulnerable or gains an unintended advantage that can make or break games. These bugs may seem inconsequential when compared to lost progress, rebooting PCs, or server crashes, but they make a big difference to players seeking a fair match on their way to higher competitive ranks.
Overwatch 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.

Competitive is the only aim assistless mode.
Blizzard has changed its mind about console aim assist in Overwatch 2 crossplay lobbies. The game's latest patch has now enabled aim assist for console players across all games except competitive.
In the November 17 patch notes (opens in new tab) , Blizzard said it found that having the feature disabled was causing problems on both sides of the peripheral pond. "In our data, we found many groups were crossplay groups between PC and console players. This meant if you were playing on console and grouping with players on PC, you were opting into a bad experience for yourself to play with your friends. Also, if you had a group that was primarily console, but one of your friends was a PC player, you had to leave the PC player out to have a good experience."
Blizzard reiterated that the aim assist was for console players only, with the option unavailable for PC players regardless of peripheral. The developer also said it was "monitoring the deployment of this change carefully and making changes quickly if needed."

The lack of aim assist in crossplay parties proved to be a point of contention when Overwatch 2 launched in October. Though the feature has been disabled since Blizzard introduced crossplay to the original Overwatch last year, it was brought back to attention with its sorta-sequel's influx of new and returning players. As Morgan Park pointed out when crossplay tensions were simmering (opens in new tab) , aim assist in modern games isn't as obvious a choice as it used to be. Games like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone have cracked-out aim assist, with some arguing that it makes using a controller advantageous over keyboard and mouse inputs. It makes implementing it in a crossplay environment more of a grey area, and a balancing act in pleasing both sides.
Equalising two different ways of playing the same game can be tricky, especially when those two methods collide in the same match. It'll be interesting to see how big a difference it makes for both PC and console users, and if Blizzard ends up walking back its decision. For PC players who have previously been shunned by their console pals, let's hope the change will stick around.

Blizzard is adding more Overwatch 2 skins for season 2 events

The first Overwatch 2 battle pass and skins didn’t go over quite as well as Blizzard hoped, the development team said in a new blog post , and they plan on fixing it in season two and beyond. The main issues Blizzard wants to address center on cosmetics and rewards, or more specifically, the lack of them, along with a progression system fans were unhappy with.
“I think a good place to start is saying that we aren’t completely satisfied with how everything feels right now,” Blizzard said in the blog post. “We want you to feel more rewarded just for sitting down and playing. We want you to have new accomplishments to chase outside of your Competitive Rank and Battle Pass level. When you finish a session, we want you to feel good about the time you just spent in the game.”
To that end, Overwatch 2 season 2 will include a unique skin you can earn in each of the season’s event alongside the other earnable cosmetics and new Twitch drops. Season 3 will include “more Battle Pass changes,” along with extra and “more interesting” challenges and overhauled progression. Whether that means you’ll still have to pay or wait until tier 50 to unlock the new tank Ramattra and any other new heroes, Blizzard didn’t say.
Other changes include tweaks to support heroes so they’re more fun to play, in an effort to cut down queue times for tank and DPS heroes. That’s in addition to yet more balance changes planned for season 2, in addition to the recent round of changes that nerfed D.Va and Zarya.
Blizzard will expand on these changes and the new skins sometime before season 2 goes live in December.
