Overwatch is getting a pretty major update with the 1.45 patch. This update not only adds a special Mardi Gras event, it also modifies game rules, updates hero pools, and makes plenty of balancing tweaks and bug fixes. The big highlights include the new triple damage ruleset, which falls under the "Experimental" card on the main menu.
This experimental game mode is simply Blizzard testing out new modifications to see how players respond. The first experiment is called Triple Damage, and changes up team composition by making each team have one tank, three damage, and two support roles. This is to see if matchmaking times can be reduced.
On the competitive side, a new feature added in the update is Hero Pools. Instead of allowing all characters to be selected for all games, Blizzard is going to limit the number of available heroes every week. While Blizzard says that most heroes will be available to pick, a few will be restricted for a limited time. The goal is to help keep things feeling fresh by forcing players to try out new characters.

Overwatch
Players will get to test the new feature before it hits the live servers on March 5.

Overwatch players didn’t have to wait too long to test out the new Hero Pools feature.
Beginning March 5, several heroes will be “disabled” in competitive play per week. The newest Public Test Realm (PTR) Patch , 1.45, allows players to experiment with the Hero Pools feature before it eventually hits the live servers.
Patch 1.45 also includes extensive updates to the Workshop mode and a few minor game changes.
When Hero Pools officially launch in season 21 of competitive play, players will find a selection of heroes “banned” from ranked matches. The development team will choose the heroes and each set of “bans” will last for a week. Up until today, little information was available about how the feature would work in ranked play. The Overwatch League will use a more data-based model when Hero Pools are enabled professionally on March 7.

Patch 1.45 offers players a chance to see how Hero Pools will work. As streamer Jeff “Emongg” Anderson shows in a screengrab, disabled heroes are given a pink overlay with a cancel sign. When queuing for competitive play, the list of disabled heroes is shown as a player hovers over the card.
Since this is a PTR patch, things aren’t always perfect. The list of disabled heroes has apparently changed over the course of a few hours instead of on a weekly basis. At the very least, this gives players a chance to see the feature in action.
For talented creators who use the Workshop mode, Patch 1.45 may feel like a gift. Developers have added dozens of additional actions, values, and optimizations to give creators new methods of design. Three new custom game maps are now available to creators to build around. Workshop Chamber, Workshop Island, and Workshop Expanse allow coders to build around a more plain base. Subroutines and a Script Diagnostics panel have also been added.
Some minor game changes have been added with Patch 1.45. Mei’s Ice Wall will now have a visible change when it’s under half health, which should better allow enemies to decide whether to focus down a wall. The initial “Assemble Heroes” timer has been reduced from 45 to 30 seconds on Assault, Hybrid, Control, and Escort maps. Players will have to choose their heroes a bit faster before game time begins.
Stuns will also work slightly differently in Patch 1.45. Interactions between stun abilities, like Reinhardt’s Earthshatter and McCree’s Flashbang, will now be more consistent. “New stuns will only replace existing stuns if their duration is longer than the time remaining on the current stun,” the developers said. A Flashbang stun won’t apply to someone who has just been Earthshattered, for example. This applies to Mei’s Freeze, Ana’s Sleep, and Sigma’s Accretion. The minimum “guaranteed” stun time is 1.5 seconds, the same as Ana’s Sleep.
PTR Patch 1.45 includes bug fixes to several heroes and maps. For details, players can check out the full patch notes .
Since this is a PTR patch, all changes aren’t guaranteed to make it to the live servers. This update doesn’t include any reference to the future Experimental Play card , which is set to hit the live servers in February.

Hero Pools are a step closer to hitting all versions of Overwatch with today's 1.45 PTR update on PC.
Last week came word that Overwatch was preparing a seismic change to its ongoing meta. That change now looks to have hit the PC Public Test Realm. As revealed in last week's address from Game Director Jeff Kaplan, PTR Patch 1.45 is introducing Hero Pools for the first time.
The concept of Hero Pools is being introduced with Season 21 of Competitive Play. This will see a small handful of heroes receive a week-long ban, with Blizzard hoping that it leads to changes in team composition and a more interesting meta. It should be noted that Hero Pools is purely an experimental idea and is subject to be discontinued if Blizzard doesn't feel like it's working out. Likewise, the publisher may make more minor changes, such as the frequency of hero rotations or the different types of heroes hit by the Hero Pool. It should also be noted that Hero Pools will only apply to Competitive Play and will not apply to other game modes.
Recall that last week's address also pointed to a new Experimental Card game mode. However, that is not active at this time. Experimental Card will release in the next retail update. Keep in mind that the PC PTR patches are mainly aimed at bug testing. Speaking of which, other changes coming with today's PTR update include new Workshop features, new visual indicators that should help out on the battlefield (including one for Mei's ice wall that shows when it's at less than half health), and a few noteworthy bug fixes.
The full PTR patch notes for version 1.45 are up on the Blizzard forums, with the update available right now on the PTR client. Remember that this is only on the PC version of Overwatch. A wider update for all platforms is expected later in the month.

But he was pulled back in after spending years in QA circles for both THQ and Activision, mostly spending time helping to push forward the Guitar Hero series at its peak. Ozzie has become a big fan of platformers, puzzle games, shooters, and RPGs, just to name a few genres, but he’s also a huge sucker for anything with a good, compelling narrative behind it. Overwatch is about to undergo some huge in-game changes, most notably related to its competitive season.
Overwatch Patch 1.45 will completely change how esports games will work going forward.
With Overwatch Season 21 hitting PC and consoles on March 5, all eyes are on the current feature that was implemented into the PTR – Hero Pools. The Hero Pool aims to shuffle the meta on a weekly basis, blocking certain heroes. With this change about to hit live servers soon, those who frequently play ranked might not be able to play how they used to (looking at you, every single main ever). So, your one-tricks out there probably need to hit the training room soon.
Overwatch Update 1.45 was aimed for the Public Test Realm (PTR) in a blog post by Blizzard Entertainment on Wednesday, February 5, for PC users first. Eventually, it was rolled out onto the main servers, including for console players. Some of the general changes from the blog post include:
An important thing to note within the article is that the Hero Pool may not stay as it is for the entire season, as Blizzard community manager for Overwatch Josh Nash said:
The Hero Pools in Overwatch will essentially block particular characters from being selected on a week-by-week basis for ranked competitive mode only. Of course, this will also be affecting the upcoming Overwatch League that will be starting on February 8 (go, team!) so we need to see how things develop once it hits the live servers and how the professional players will take it. For now, get ready for some big changes.
