Small tweaks add up to a more informative viewing experience.

Last week’s Overwatch update, Patch 1.44, was full of big changes to the game. Half a dozen heroes received nerfs and the Lunar New Year event debuted with new skins, a new arcade mode, and weekly challenges . Hidden in the margins of Patch 1.44’s notes are small tweaks to Overwatch ’s spectator client that create a better viewing experience for both observers and players.
Over the past year, with the addition of the replay viewer and the popularity of the Overwatch League, developers have added more alerts within the game’s user interface (UI). These icons and color changes allow spectators and players to better understand what’s happening during fast-paced Overwatch matches. During the 2019 Overwatch League season, developers added icons to reflect players being hacked, frozen, or hit with Ana’s anti-healing grenade.
In Patch 1.44, more of these icons have been added to indicate status changes when spectating a game. When Zenyatta uses his Discord orb on a player, an icon appears beside that player. Ana’s Nano-Boost ultimate now adds a blue outline around a player’s health bar. This is the positive version of the purple outline that appears with her anti-heal grenade. Any player who’s resurrected by Mercy will gain a brief, yellow flash with a healing icon.

Significant changes to third-person cameras have also been added to the spectator client. Spectators can now shift between the left and right shoulders of a hero while in third-person view, according to the Patch 1.44 update notes . This change can help observers make note of who’s flanking or sneaking up on a specific player. Spectators can also toggle between the “normal” third-person mode and the over-the-shoulder third-person mode.
Many players have noticed that kill cameras look different since Patch 1.44 dropped. The “death camera” now quickly pans to the person who eliminated you to “make it easier to see if you were killed by someone behind you or to your side,” according to developer comments on the patch notes. While this is often a jarring shift, it can help players plan their next attack or warn their surviving teammates.
These spectator changes will be in effect when the Overwatch League begins on Feb. 8.

This year, we’re celebrating Lunar New Year with new seasonal items including legendary skins like Face Changer Sombra, Mask Dancer Moira, Samul Nori Lúcio, and Opera Brigitte. Experience the third competitive season of our Capture the Flag mode, in addition to a brand new game mode called Blitz CTF.
Feature Update: Party Flex for Role Queue
Unsure of which role you want to play? Now, party members who queue for any game mode with Role Queue enabled can select multiple roles, indicating what they're willing to play in the next game.
Your other party members' role choices and Competitive Play skill ratings may affect which roles you are eligible to choose, or which role you can play. For example, if you selected all three roles (Tank, Damage, Healing) to indicate your willingness to play any of them, and then two other party members choose Support, you will not get to play Support in the next game.
The Lobby section of Custom Game Settings has a new option “Data Center Preference”. This option provides the game creator with more control over where the game will be hosted. The default “Best Available” choice automatically provides the creator with the best quality connection available to them. We only suggest choosing a specific datacenter if no single datacenter can simultaneously provide the best connection to all players. This is usually only the case when the players participating in the custom game are located in different geographic regions of the world.
Developer Comment: Immortality Field ended up being too powerful when placed in locations that were safe from enemy fire, such as around corners. Reducing its uptime will help address this case while remaining strong at saving teammates out in the open.
Developer Comment: The slowing effect of Mei's primary fire can sometimes feel too difficult to escape. Lowering the amount it slows by and the duration it lasts for will make it easier to react to. The time required to completely freeze a target remains the same.
Developer Comment: The lower cooldown on her mobility will enable D.Va to more readily swap between playing offensively and defensively.
Developer Comment: Orisa has been a little too difficult to deal with while Fortify is active, so we're reducing the amount of damage reduction to give enemies more effective damage during this time.
Developer Comment: The increased projectile speed Hanzo received in his rework ended up making his arrows too good at longer ranges. Decreasing the speed will reduce his sniping capability while still keeping him strong at mid-range.
Developer Comment: Rising Uppercut followed immediately by his primary fire is a little too effective of a combo on its own, so we're increasing the time enemies have to react to it.

The update nerfed Mei, Baptiste, Hanzo, Orisa, and Doomfist.

If players want a taste of the Overwatch League meta, they can test it on the PTR now.
Senior product director Jon Spector confirmed that the OWL’s next season will follow the state of the game introduced by last night’s PTR patch . The update made key changes to some meta heroes’ skills and is available for playtesting on the PTR.
“We’ll begin the 2020 OWL season on patch 1.44,” Spector said on a Reddit comment on Jan. 9. “The patch currently on PTR as of today.”
The patch touched on staple skills for some characters. Baptiste’s controversial Immortality Field suffered an increase in cooldown and a decrease in duration, reducing its general uptime. His ultimate cost was also raised by 20 percent. Orisa’s Fortify was also toned down and will only soak up 40 percent of incoming damage compared to its previous 50.
Some DPS characters also suffered balancing tweaks last night. Mei took the lion’s share of the adjustments. Her primary fire will slow players less intensely and for a shorter duration of the time. Doomfist’s recovery time following his rising uppercut was nearly doubled to half a second and increased the hero’s inactivity window after using the skill. Hanzo also received minor adjustments. His arrows will fly more slowly in line with pre-rework levels.
Patch 1.44 drops in a gray area for the meta. The late stages of the OWL were filled with double shield compositions, but last December’s Patch 1.43 watered down the effectiveness of barriers during the offseason. The preliminary meta didn’t see significant changes in heroes following the patch, although the nerfs to shields could bring Zenyatta back into play.
Even though the nerf to barriers may not appear to have a preliminary effect on who to play, it did impact how to play. Tank and support heroes have to rely less on shields, and damage players were finally able to shoot something that isn’t a static barrier. The latest PTR patch follows the directives of its predecessor in watering down the double shield meta.
Most of the heroes affected by the patch were early contenders for meta spots and featured heavily in the final parts of the Overwatch League. Mei and Doomfist’s anti-tank capacities made them valuable picks, and Hanzo’s potential for sniping, spamming, and peeking gave the hero room to thrive following the nerf to shields.
Even if the patch doesn’t necessarily change the meta for the time being, it can give enough room for off-meta heroes to shine. Reducing the value that certain characters bring to the team can make them less of a must-pick and reward unorthodox combinations. For instance, the changes to Baptiste’s kit still allow the hero to provide valuable utility, but they can make his presence less game-changing.
The state of the meta isn’t set in stone either and it’s possible that unorthodox, counter-intuitive compositions like the infamous triple-tank, triple-support GOATS composition can rise over the course of the season. In the same fashion, the game is susceptible to midseason balance changes that can shake up the most common compositions.
The patch is still on the PTR and can change before being pushed to the live servers and into the Overwatch League, which will kick off its third season on Feb. 8.
