Regulators at casinos operating on South Korea's semi-autonomous island of Jeju (pictured) have confirmed to GGRA some details of COVID-19 response guidelines issued by holiday destinations to game operators.

This manual was released in July after being guided by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC).

Jeju City's Casino Policy Division told GGRAsia, "It is a document that summarizes what Jeju game companies should do at each alert stage in the event of COVID-19 infection in the community."

According to the manual, Jeju Island authorities have no authority over how local casino operators force the space between the game table and the people who use it. However, Jeju Island's game regulators mentioned to us that since the island's game venues are all "closed" spaces, the local authorities have a duty to monitor the quality of ventilation.

The manual also details scenarios that could lead to a forced closure of the game center. Local disease control authorities can issue or lift the closure order.

If you have a casino employee or sponsor who has been confirmed to have been in contact with a confirmed COVID-19 infection, it could trigger the closure of the game center, according to the manual consistent with South Korea's national protocols under the Enforcement Decree of the Infectious Disease Control and Prevention Act.

Health authorities have asked employees or game customers at Jeju casinos to be tested if they are suspected of being infected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. "If a positive result comes out, part or all of the game venues will be closed depending on the size of the venue," the manual pointed out.

According to information from the Korea Casino Association, Jeju Island has the largest foreigner-only casino in Korea as a single cluster. Jeju Island currently has eight such locations. There are eight foreigner-only casinos in mainland Korea, and Kangwon Land is the only real estate that can accommodate people with only Korean passports.

Most casinos in Jeju are small and located inside hotels. The exception is Jeju Shinhwa World, a resort and entertainment complex promoted and operated by Hong Kong-listed Landing International Development.
