I grabbed my car keys and checked my watch.
"Come on, love, we're going to be late," I called to my daughter Kacie, 10.
As she wandered down the stairs ready for school, I did a double take.
The buttons on her shirt were straining against her chest – her boobs had definitely grown again.
She'd started her period just a few weeks before and it seemed overnight she'd shot up from an A-cup to a B.
I'd mentioned it to the school nurse but she'd just said it was puppy fat.
It seemed odd to me, though, because the rest of her body was tiny.
A week later, I decided to take Kacie to the doctor to voice my concerns.
He said it was quite common for girls with Kacie's condition to go through early puberty.
"I think it's more than puberty," I fretted to my fiancé, Peter.
A month later, Peter and I got married.
Kacie was our bridesmaid and looked so pretty with her hair in a long plait.
But as I helped her into her pale blue gown, I couldn't help but notice one of her breasts was bigger than the other.

And just a few weeks after the wedding, the size difference between them was huge – one was a B-cup and the other a D.
She'd grown out of the first lot of bras I'd bought for her so I took her to a store to get fitted.
"Oh my goodness!" the sales assistant gasped, as she wrapped the measuring tape around her.
"I'm afraid we don't have anything suitable here".
There simply weren't any shops that stocked bras for such lopsided chests.
I had to go online and get some made-to-order.
As the weeks passed, her chest continued to swell and she was in constant pain as the skin stretched.
She had countless hospital appointments for ultrasounds and blood tests, but everything came back negative.
Soon, poor Kacie couldn't walk without being hunched over.
She couldn't run around like other kids her age, instead she had to lie on the couch in front of the TV.
By now Kacie had huge J-cup breasts , having gone up nine bra sizes in four months.
To my horror, it seemed the skin under her boobs had started to tear.
I took her back to the GP that very day. But he just sent her away with soothing cream and painkillers – I wanted to scream.

In the end, I had to get a specialist to refer to us another GP who finally took us seriously.
Kacie was sent to hospital for pain management – morphine and hormone injections.
"The hormones will make the problem worse initially," the doctor warned me.
And they did. One afternoon a nurse came to check on Kacie and gasped.
"They've grown in the last couple of hours! She cried.
A blood test revealed her calcium levels were too high.
"We need to get them down right now," a doctor said anxiously. "It could be fatal if the calcium solidifies and causes organ failure."
Suddenly, Kacie started vomiting luminous green liquid.
"Oh my God," I screamed. "Please do something!"
"I just want her to get better". Image: Supplied
She was rushed to a dependency unit where doctors battled to save her life.
It broke my heart seeing my poor little girl lying in bed all covered in tubes.
They seemed to be gawking, unable to believe how big her boobs were.
She's not a freak show , I thought angrily. Finally, five days later, she was put on a drug to slow down her breast growth.
We were by her side for hours until she woke up after the surgery. Image: Supplied
After that, a doctor took me and Peter into a private room.
"I'm afraid there's only one way we can cure Kacie's condition… and it's quite drastic," he said slowly.
"Go on," I urged, feeling anxious. "I just want her to get better."

A 12-year-old girl in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, is suffering from excessive breast growth. What is the cause for this?
According to an episode of “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho” on Sunday, Yumi’s breasts have grown so big, they reach her belly button.
While girls her age wear baby bras, Yumi's had to use a size 40 DDD Cup. Because of the rarity of her bra size, she's only able to buy only three pairs from a thrift store.
Yumi shared that she's struggled with shoulder and back pain, especially when she needs to run. She's only 4’9” tall but her breasts weigh nearly 20 kilograms.
Because of her condition, Yumi just locks herself inside their house to avoid people staring at her.
According to her aunt Grace, Yumi’s breasts began growing when she started menstruating last year.
Every time Yumi got her period, her breasts would grow bigger.
At first, they bought baby bras for Yumi, but she immediately outgrew them.
Before moving in with her aunt in Puerto Princesa, Yumi lived in Taytay, Palawan. She said she wants to go back home but she's scared she might be bullied.
Yumi narrates that one time when a strange man told her cousin of his plans to court her because of her large breasts. She got scared and started to cry.
“Ayaw ko po kasing maranasan ’yung naranasan ni Mama. ’Yung mama ko po kasi, nakaranas na siya na minamanyak siya ng ibang lalaki. Ayaw ko po na magawa sa akin iyon.”
[I don’t want to experience what my mom did. My mom was disrespected by other men. I don’t want to experience that.]
Yumi and her mother Maricel have not seen each other for almost half a year now because of the community quarantine.
The last time they saw each other, Maricel noticed Yumi’s breasts were bigger than her sister’s, but didn’t think much of it.
When she saw a recent photo of Yumi, however, she was shocked.
According to Maricel, she's afraid that her daughter would go through the same experiences she had with rude people and perverts.
People shouldn’t laugh, harm or taunt Yumi over her condition.
According to a lawyer, doing so would violate the Bawal Bastos Law or Safe Spaces Act and Anti-Bullying Law of 2013. While causing harm, insulting other people online, or saying hurtful words was a violation of the Cybercrime Act, which could be penalized with imprisonment.
“Sana po huwag po silang manyak ng babae kasi pare-parehas lang naman po tayong mga tao. Pareho lang po ang isa’t isa,” Yumi said.
[I hope they would stop disrespecting women because we’re humans too.]
In early June, Yumi was able to go to a specialist, where she was diagnosed with juvenile gigantomastia.
According to the doctor, this condition entails the aggressive growth of the flesh.
The only solution, she said, was an operation that would cost P600,000 – P1,000,000.
Some of the options included a breast reduction surgery or a subcutaneous mastectomy, where everything would be removed, to be followed by artificial implants.
Yumi shared that once she gets better, she could reach her dreams of being a beauty queen, of running, dancing, and playing with other children.
As a teacher, however, Maricel is unsure if they could even afford the surgery. She earns a net pay of around P6,000.
If she took out a loan, she didn’t know how she would feed her family.
Upon learning about her condition, the KMJS team sent financial assistance to the family, plus special undergarments for Yumi.
Maricel asked the public to take Yumi’s condition seriously and not ridicule or bully her daughter
To help Yumi get through this difficult time, her mother paid her a surprise visit.
Now reunited with Yumi, Maricel could only wish for her daughter to live a normal life again and enjoy her childhood. – Kaela Malig/RC, GMA News

ONE'S LOVE Queen 'humbled and touched' by Jubilee celebrations as she thanks Brits

A TEENAGER whose HH-cup boobs "won’t stop growing" fears breast reduction surgery won’t help her after suffering years of "pain, harassment and abuse".
Anya St James was 13 when she noticed the fast rate her chest was growing at - as she went from a B-cup to DDs in just one year.
Since then her boobs have grown at least “one cup size each year” and now the 18-year-old fears for the future.
For years the HH-cup retail worker has been plagued by back, neck and shoulder problems , abuse from strangers and difficulty finding love .
Anya, from Gold Coast, Queensland, is being tested for gigantomastia - a rare condition that causes excessive breast growth.
The exact cause is unknown but it has been linked to hormones released during puberty or pregnancy and certain types of medication.
Anya, whose case is baffling doctors, told The Sun: “At times my boobs have grown gradually, but in four years I’ve gone from having B-cups to HHs.
“Each year I’ve gone up a whole cup-size and what still scares me is that in two years’ time my boobs may not have stopped growing.
“For most girls my age, their breasts have stopped but mine have only continued to get bigger, bigger and bigger.
“Even when I have lost weight my boobs haven’t changed size or shape - they are still growing.
“I am 18 now and if I had surgery now, by the end of the year they could have grown again - what if they double in size again? I don’t want to keep having surgeries.”
Anya admitted she was “in awe” after initially being told she had gone from a B-cup to a DD at the age of 14 - but over time the difficulties of having a bigger bust became apparent.
Within that first year of her “growth spurt”, the youngster went from wearing training bras to getting sized and fitted “every couple of months”.
Now Anya longs for the days when it was easier to shop for bras as she is now forced to wear “grandma bras” and can rarely find ones that fit her.
She said: “H-cup is the maximum most stores go to especially for people with bigger breasts.
I don't know how big they will have grown by the time I'm 20!
“They normally don’t have HH and this is now while 18, I don’t know how big they could grow by the time I’m 20.”
Shopping isn’t the only issue faced by Anya, who claims she regularly has to lie down and rest from the pain of carrying such a big bosom.
She has also been forced to give up her favourite sporting activities like jump rope and trampolining due to “the pressure of gravity”.
Anya said: “I have concerns about the future for my back and neck, especially if I don’t fix my posture.
“I’ve tried to weigh them multiple times but it’s not easy and the only thing I can compare them to in size is a cantaloupe (rockmelon).
“Each of my boobs is the size of a small child’s head, so it’s like having two baby’s heads attached to my chest.
“There is a lot of strain on my back and neck and it will only get worse with time - even the bras I wear strain my shoulders and neck.
“I’m scared about how bad the pain will get, as it affects my day to day activities and I often need to lie down to rest.”
During her school years, Anya claims her large bust attracted “unhealthy attention” from olders pupils and men in general.
She was around 13 when fellow students started demanding her to send naked photographs and others “harassed me quite a lot”.
Anya said: “One thing I never thought I would experience at that age was catcalling but I had it a lot and was not wearing anything provocative.
“It was not a pleasant experience and a lot of older guys would message me, asking me to send them nudes.
“At that age it’s not the right thing to do and throughout school I was bullied a lot.
“If I was ever seen talking to a guy, they would ask ‘Why aren’t you sending nude photos?’ and give me a hard time.
“The experience made it really hard to go to school because I had a group of 10 guys all trying to hit on me at the same time.
“When I didn’t show any interest in them I would get a lot of backlash - I definitely got harassed quite a lot but I’ve grown from that.”
Anya says she regularly gets complimented about her boobs from other women, which she finds “lovely” and knows some are wrongly “envious” of her.
She explains the difficulties of having such large breasts and jokes that she would “share them” if she could.
You can take them (my boobs) from me, I don't want them!
Anya said: “I tell them ‘You can take them from me, I don’t want them!’ and explain the problems I’ve faced.
“Everyone says they wish they had big boobs but they don’t realise the problems - I can’t even find nice bras that fit me!
“I know I can’t wear a lot of tops either because if I did my boobs wouldn’t fit and they would spill out somewhere.
GIGANTOMASTIA is a rare condition that causes unusually excessive breast growth in women.
The exact cause isn't entirely known but doctors believe it can be triggered by hormones released during pregnancy or puberty, and after certain types of medication.
In extreme cases, some women's breasts have grown three or more cup sizes within a few days.
Difficulties associated with gigantomastia include breast pain, posture problems, infections and muscle pain.
Some women with the condition seek breast reduction surgery or a mastectomy.
Other names for gigantomastia include breast hypertrophy and macromastia.
“I’m only 5ft 3in tall so they never fit my body and my chest nicely, anything with cleavage looks overdone and people say it ‘looks trashy.’”
Anya is still debating whether to get breast reduction surgery and hopes she may be able to explore the option in the future.
In the meantime, she’s been trying to find ways to empower herself online - on @KentuckyFriedClouds - and to learn to love her body.
Anya said: “It has taken a toll on my self-esteem and makes me want to cover-up all the more rather than being proud, showing it off and being happy.
“Other women can dance and jump around, where I can only do that if I hold my boobs in place - it’s like having two large balls bouncing on my chest.
“I can’t do a lot of physical activity because of the pain and the anxiety I have about exercising in public.
“It’s hard, the physical and mental aspects have definitely negatively affected me.”
