It doesn’t matter if you’re gearing up for glamping, replacing a ratty rain jacket, or stocking up on socks—there is a world of outdoor retailers that will meet your needs. Outdoor enthusiasts know how challenging it can be to find the right gear for your activity of choice, whether you’re shopping for hiking gear for your trek outdoors or you’re looking for camping gear for your next backpacking trip . From hiking boots to climbing harnesses to snowboards , the outdoor market can be overwhelming. That’s why it’s important to know where you can find high-quality picks from trusted outdoor brands, both online and in brick and mortar retail stores.
Shopping IRL at outdoor stores like L.L.Bean and REI is a great first step if you’re just getting into outdoor activities and want to get a firsthand feel for the apparel and gear that’s involved. Plus, it’s easier to know what size kayak, mountain bike , paddleboard, or humble climbing shoe you’ll need if you’re looking at them in person.
On the other hand, don’t count out online shopping for big-ticket items like tents and other vital pieces of camping gear, especially if you want to avoid paying full-price . From backpacking to watersports, outdoor gear can get expensive fast, so browsing discount sites like Steep and Cheap, Sierra Trading Post, and the outlet section of REI Co-op is an excellent way to save.
Below, we’ve listed some of the very best outdoor retailers to shop, whether you’re looking to pick up in-store or have your goodies shipped conveniently to your door. From sporting goods superstores like Dick’s to the outdoor equipment experts you’ll find at Backcountry and REI, here’s where you can find the new gear you need for another fantastic season in the outside world.
From camping essentials to high-end picks for seasoned hikers, Backcountry has what you’re looking for. This Utah-based company has been outfitting outdoorsy types since 1996 and offers frequent sales on both exclusive brands and big names like the North Face in equal measure. Plus, the brand’s customer service team, known affectionately as the gearheads, are available via online chat or phone to discuss your orders or help you choose the right items for you.
It should come as no surprise that Amazon, the online shopping colossus that it is, actually has a relatively robust selection of outdoor items and hiking gear, with plenty of customer reviews to help guide your search.
Eddie Bauer dates back to 1920—so if you want outerwear, clothes, gear, shoes, and more, all with 100 years of know-how behind their designs, look no further than this outdoor industry stalwart. We especially love the layering options you can find at Eddie Bauer, and the travel towel featured below is antibacterial and fast-drying .
While you may think of running gear, fitness equipment , or yoga essentials when you think of Dick’s Sporting Goods, it also stocks plenty of must-haves for exploring the great outdoors. From trekking poles to sleeping bags , the items found at Dick’s can upgrade your next camping trip from sunup to sundown.
Fans of outdoor recreation, assemble. Instagram-favorite brand Outdoor Voices doesn’t just make apparel that looks and feels good—it’s also continuing to expand its outdoor line of performance wear, like the BreakLite Windbreaker shorts and the Rectrek Zip-Off pants.
Outdoorspeople of all stripes can find both trail-tested and new products they simply have to have at REI. Come for the name-brand items, stay for the REI-branded gear that consistently garners five-star ratings. And REI Co-op members enjoy a lifetime membership filled with perks like discounts on rentals and shop services, plus special pricing on REI Adventure trips , in exchange for a $30 activation fee.
Shopping on a budget? Steep and Cheap, the outlet arm of Backcountry, has some of the absolute best deals on outdoor equipment. As is often the case when browsing heavily discounted goods, size availability may vary, so don’t hesitate to add those boots to your cart as soon as you find them in your size.
Made for and by people who deeply love nature and outdoor activities, Patagonia makes clothes, bags, and accessories that you can have for life. And, if something falls into disrepair, the brand offers repair services (and advice, for the DIY-ers out there) for a fee. Those who like to reuse and recycle should also check out Patagonia’s Worn Wear section, where used gear is sold, usually for a marked-down price.
If you want to get back to nature in style, Huckberry should be your go-to shop. In addition to its well-crafted attire and housewares, this brand has a wide array of outdoor items that’ll help you go into your next adventure feeling extremely prepared—and fashionable.
Adidas Terrex, the outdoor arm of one of our favorite athletic brands, melds the sleek sensibilities we love about the three-stripe brand with the rugged functionality we expect from outdoor footwear and clothing. Trailer runners , hikers, and climbers especially should spend some time browsing the selection here.
Going somewhere damp, cold, windy, or all of the above? Do not pack your backs without scoping out Marmot. With constantly evolving tech (like featherless insulation and breathable—yet totally waterproof—coating) and a limited lifetime warranty on its goods, Marmot’s gear is simultaneously innovative and reliable.
With frequent sales, discounts, and category promotions, Moosejaw is a great retailer to check for low-key incredible deals on outdoor gear. Even if you aren’t looking for something in particular, this brand also offers online resources on all things outdoorsy, whether you are curious about the latest item it’s tested firsthand or need camp cooking inspiration.
Another excellent option for discounted gear, Sierra is the outdoorsy sister brand of bargain-hunting faves Marshalls and TJ Maxx. And, much like those stores, one look at Sierra could make you realize that, even though you only came for a new yoga mat , you actually need a dozen or more things that just happen to be handsomely marked down at this retailer.
The North Face walks the line between technical performance apparel and streetwear with stunning finesse, resulting in clothes, jackets, and shoes that will keep you comfortable on the trail and stylish while you’re in town. And the Tekware Fleece pants featured below just won a SELF Activewear Award for best hiking pants.
L.L.Bean’s time-tested items, from its signature canvas totes to its oh-so-warm lined flannel shirts, were made for chilly hikes and long days picnicking in the park. And, if you find yourself in Freeport, Maine, swing by the brand's flagship store for a photo op with the giant Bean Boot .

There’s something undeniably special about being by yourself in the great outdoors. It’s a chance to ground, relax , and reconnect with ourselves and the natural world that we don’t get often enough with our largely indoor lives.
It’s also been shown to be extremely positive for our health and well-being. “There’s a growing body of research that points to the tremendous health benefits of being outside,” mindfulness teacher and wilderness guide Mark Coleman , author of Awake in the Wild: Mindfulness in Nature as a Path of Self-Discovery, tells SELF.
A meta-analysis of over 140 studies published in Environmental Research in 2018, for instance, found that green space exposure was associated with lowered cortisol levels, heart rate, and blood pressure—all signifying stress reduction—as well as reduced incidence of chronic health conditions like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. And a review of 14 studies on college-aged students published in Frontiers in Psychology in 2020 found that as little as 10 to 30 minutes of being in nature decreased both biological and self-reported markers of stress. It also led to improvements in mood—including lower self-reported feelings of anxiety , fatigue, and depression, and greater feelings of calm, comfort, and being refreshed. Science is “pointing to something that we know intuitively,” Coleman explains, “which is that we feel better when we’re outside.”
However, many of us don’t have oodles of spare time or pristine nature spots within a short walking distance. Increasing everybody’s access to safe, clean outdoor spaces requires systemic solutions, but there are things we can do as individuals to maximize the potentially limited time we get to spend by ourselves in nature. That way, we can make our time alone in nature feel more restorative, therapeutic, and more like the vital self-care that it is.
“There are many, many different ways to experience nature” in a restorative way, Nooshin Razani , MD, MPH, director of the Center for Nature and Health at University of California, San Francisco, tells SELF. What will serve a person most really depends on the individual, Dr. Razani says, and there’s really no way to do this wrong. Plus, while social connection in nature can be wonderful, spending this time alone provides a rare opportunity for people to “reconnect to who they actually are” and give themselves “permission to not be accountable to the outside world,” Dr. Razani says.
With that perspective in mind, we gathered guidance from a variety of nature lovers and experts who incorporate the healing powers of nature into their work. Here are a few ways to enhance your solo experience of the outdoors, from practical tips to creative activities to major outlook shifts.
If you live near a beach or national park, awesome. If not, don’t worry about crafting some type of idyllic experience in a gorgeous wilderness landscape. “Nature doesn’t have to be big or really anything specific in order for it to feel sacred and healing,” Dr. Razani says. “Whatever nature you have access to is the nature that you can use.” Even a city can be teeming with biodiversity—urban farms, overgrown empty lots, weeds peeking through the sidewalk cracks.
Wherever you live, find a point of access to nature that is close by and genuinely convenient for you to escape to, Stacy Beller Stryer, MD, associate medical director of Park Rx America (PRA), tells SELF. That could be your backyard, a little park, a walking path, a rooftop, or fire escape near a tree.
One way to put our knowledge about the salutary effects of nature into action is to actually treat outdoor time like medicine in a very literal way: Prescribe it. That’s the philosophy behind PRA, which works with health-care providers and the public to promote people getting outside more. Writing yourself an individualized nature prescription will both help you think about what would benefit your physical and/or mental health the most—silence, movement, rest, meditation , adventure—and make a clear plan for doing that on a regular basis, Dr. Stryer says. Fill out your own blank nature prescription from PRA, where you can list out the place, activity, frequency, and duration of your outdoor time.
“In order to center healing when you’re in nature, you need to be in a space where you feel safe and that feels welcoming,” Dr. Razani says. People of color may especially find that proves more difficult, as historically they’ve been deprived of access to the country’s natural treasures and excluded from outdoor recreational culture. There’s also the traumatic impact of racism and racial violence, and the fact that simply being alone can feel—or be—unsafe for a person of color.
One remedy for that is the power of community, as Dora Kamau , a mindfulness meditation teacher at Headspace, wellness artist, and registered psychiatric nurse, tells SELF. “The biggest thing that helped me get outdoors more and explore nature was to find community in outdoor spaces. This provided me with a sense of safety and competence to eventually be able to venture out on my own,” says Kamau, who guides meditations in Headspace’s new nature content collection. Kamau, who is part of a hiking group in Los Angeles, says that connecting with “other Black folks that are wanting to get outside more really encourages me to do the same thing.” She recommends finding community in whatever you’re into—like running , yoga, birding, or gardening.
While you certainly don’t have to seek out a magnificent vista or national park, visiting a visually spectacular or more wild place may foster a sense of awe—a positive emotion evoked by the perception of vastness that is associated with heightened sense of presence, feelings of transcendence, and connectedness. Plus, as research suggests, it’s also linked to an increase in positive emotions.
Awe is basically “experiencing yourself as small in the grand scheme of things,” Dr. Razani says, which many people have felt looking at a sunrise or a massive canyon. “My sense of awe is evoked when I am at the beach or looking at the mountains or in the forest,” Kamau says. “It’s incredibly restorative.”
Meditation, and mindfulness meditation in particular, has been shown to be extremely good for our physical and mental health. But it can also be…kind of difficult or boring, especially for beginners. Coleman says that many people who find meditation challenging are pleased to find it comes much more easily in the outdoors. “The great thing about nature meditation work is that if we spend enough time outdoors, the mindfulness piece comes quite naturally,” outdoor guide Micah Mortali, founder of the Kripalu School of Mindful Outdoor Leadership and author of Rewilding: Meditations, Practices and Skills for Awakening in Natur e, tells SELF.
Nature “lures and draws us into the present moment,” Coleman explains, by making that moment a more rich, enlivening, and sensorily engaging place to rest our awareness (compared to, say, sittin
