Join Outdoors Club around the New York City area. Visit interesting places and meet new people. Some activities are easy, and others difficult. Most of our events are easily reached by public transportation.
RSVP Policy: We appreciate you being a considerate Outdoors Club community member. There are often more people wanting to attend than spots available. Sign up only if you intend to show up. If you have to cancel, please change your RSVP as early as possible to allow someone on the waitlist an opportunity attend.
Joining this Meetup group does not make you an Outdoors Club member. Non-members pay one-day dues of $5 to attend an Outdoors Club event. By becoming an annual dues paying member, you won't have to pay $5 per event, you'll receive our semi-annual hike schedule in advance, be notified of Member-Only events not posted on Meetup and support Outdoors Club operations. http://www.outdoorsclubny.org/membership/
If you have any questions about an event, please contact the leader directly (email / phone included in event description). For general questions about Outdoors Club, please call Lenny Morgenstern at 917-842-9490 or email us at outdoorsclubny@yahoo.com.
Your participation in any of our activities is your acknowledgment that you are solely responsible for your own assessment of your abilities and your physical fitness to participate in that activity. Participants in any Outdoors Club activity are encouraged to discuss with the hike leader any limitation they may have that could affect their ability to fully participate in an event. The hike leader may refuse to take anyone who lacks proper equipment or adequate ability. Walkers must be physically fit and by joining any event you agree to waive all rights and claims for damages against Outdoors Club, its hike leaders, officers, directors, employees or volunteers.
Outdoors Club does not tolerate inappropriate behavior during its events. If you are subject to or witness any inappropriate behavior during an Outdoors Club event, please report the behavior to us at outdoorsclubny@yahoo.com. We will investigate any reports of inappropriate behavior and take necessary action.
We encourage and appreciate the posting of photos taken during Outdoors Club events and we reserve the right to use the photos in any manner and for any reason, except for commercial purposes, without remuneration or credit.
South Shore of Long Island
PLEASE NOTE: This walk is intended primarily for those waitlisted for the Sept 3 walk.: Limited to 25 walkers, all of whom must be fully vaccinated (including boosters).
Come celebrate the end of summer and the 100th anniversary of Long Beach, the "City by the Sea. We'll start with a visit to a nearby farmers' market that includes several non-farm purveyors as well as food and entertainment. The walk proceeds to a few historic sites, with an accompanying synopsis of Long Beach's colorful history presented by docents at the Long Beach Historical Society. (Donations welcome). We'll then stroll a few blocks on one of the finest boardwalks in the USA before viewing some of Long Beach's oldest and loveliest homes. We then return to the boardwalk for refreshments and access to the beach. Total walking distance will be about four miles, with toilets available along the way.
How to Find Us: Take the 11:42 am LIRR train from Penn Station (11:43 am from Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn, with change in Jamaica). It arrives in Long Beach, which is also the last stop, at 12:39 pm. We'll meet at the exit from the LIRR station. There's only one exit, and it's at the front of the train. Roundtrip fare for seniors/disabled is $14; $20.50 for everyone else. For return trip, options include trains departing at 3:50 pm, 4:23 pm and 5:23 pm, depending on whether walkers wish to sunbathe. Access to beach is free, but swimming is prohibited because lifeguards are not on duty after Labor Day.
Everything old is new again. Join me on an approximate 6-mile walk (mostly on sidewalks) to visit the charming town of Westport. See old history alongside modern charm. We’ll also visit the Westport Museum for History & Culture, ($5 entrance fee). Autumn is a lovely time of year in Connecticut! From Grand Central Station, buy a round-trip ticket ($27) to Westport, CT.
Take the 9:02 a.m. train—find me waiting beforehand by the Grand Central Terminal clock. As always, I prefer that you RSVP and ask questions through the Meetup page.
About 3.5 miles, easy pace. Possibly a bit of Brooklyn Bridge Park, followed by a look at lots of pleasing residential architecture (including many front gardens), old churches, and an interesting mix of varied retail offerings. Pros and cons of (advanced) gentrification come into play. Meet at 1 p.m. (after lunch) outside the Barnes & Noble at 106 Court Street (between Schermerhorn and State Streets). Take the 2, 3, or 4 train to Borough Hall or the R train to Court Street. Bring water, snacks, face mask. Steady rain cancels.
Watch for updates, and it’s best to confirm with walk leader, Devra Zetlan, at[masked] or [masked]. Nonmembers, $5.
A delicious mix of cultures. Take the 7 train to Main Street, Flushing, and meet outside St. George Church,[masked]th Avenue, not far from the station. Because of the many amazing dining options/food courts on Main Street in Flushing.
We’ll meet after lunch at 1 p.m. outside the church. This approximately 4-mile walk will take us to many surprising sights in the neighborhood. As always, I prefer that you RSVP and ask questions through the Meetup page.
The pictures from the walk in Far Rockaway look great! I'd love to join if it's offered in the Fall.
It was very nice meeting everyone & viewing some spectacular 🖼 Look forward to seeing ya'll soon -thank you Sarina
Guys, I'm frustrated and flummoxed. As soon as I get an email about an upcoming walk, I try to join it, but I am "shut out." Is there any trick to circumvent this??
