I needed a regulated DC from a rogue 12vac transformer that was spitting out 14vac. Hoping this might have some voltage DC protection, I gave this a $20 trial. In short, this is only foam thermal shrink wrap with a GBU6B full bridge rectifier and wires for the in/out. In an ideal 12vac(rms), this would provide 15.5vdc. Be aware of this if you have voltage sensitive DC to over-volting. Not sure how much the wires, soldering and wrapping costs, but the rectifier is worth $0.22. If you don't have the time to make your own and you don't mind a less than idea DC (bumpy and higher than advertised), this may work for you (if you see flickering, purchase a capacitor that might even it out). A $20 dollar lesson to reinforce the "if you want it done right, design it yourself". Also note, my dissection was prompted by o-scoping the output and disbelief that it couldn't just be a FBR.
I was pretty excited about the great reviews and thought this would be the perfect answer. It worked great for a couple of weeks, then my 60w transformer kept tripping. After reconnecting each of my connections with no luck, I finally called an electrician. He discovered this device was getting REALLY hot, in fact it had melted through the casing! I had purchased two units as I wasn't sure what my load was going to be at the time so we wired in the second one and reduced the load from 40w to 24w and ordered a third unit for the other 16w. The replacement is still quite warm, but not as hot as the original. Hopefully that will hold, otherwise I'll need to find another solution. My configuration is a Kichler 15E60BK Standard Series 60-Watt Transformer, about 20 feet of 12 gauge wire (with 4 - 2w lights connected) to this unit. Off of this unit there are 5 led strips totaling 20 feet drawing 2w/ft
I am using the Peak railing from Home Depot and they have an RGB light kit and rail kit. I did not want all the colors of an RGB kit nor did I have direct access to 110v and really didn’t want my elderly mom having to use an app on her phone to configure it. So I went with simple 16.4 12v DC lights in a strip and used the Peak railing strip holders. They can be mounted on the outside or inside and I wanted them on the outside for more indirect lighting while on the deck. I had to make some changes due to the irregular shape of the deck, but it all turned out great. Couldn’t have done it without these EXCELLENT converters to change my landscape 12v AC to DC. Would have liked the leads to be a slightly larger gauge, but it all works well.
This thing seems to just be a large diode. When hooked up to my Moon Rays low-voltage lighting transformer I get a lot of 60 Hz flicker. So while "technically" a rectifier, this is not what I'd call a suitable rectifier. It would be unlikely to please you when using for LED lighting.
I used this to convert from AC to DC power for a led light that only worked on DC. This unit is a little pricey if you needed multiple units but it does the trick. Note that when you convert to DC the positive and negative terminals come into play and circuits do not work if you do not connect them to the proper side.
Most landscape supplies provide 12VAC, and some LEDs require 12VDC - that's where this comes in. Gave it 4 stars since it does what it says and is weatherproof and in a small package, but there are limitations. It's not really 12VAC in >> 12VDC out of course. I found that with 12.44VAC in, it provides 11.08VDC out. Not enough for my LEDs but most supplies have multiple taps these days. 13 or 14 VAC should work fine. Also, I noticed that the LEDs would 'flicker' slightly - I didn't have an o-scope but I assume there is some ripple rising on the output.
This is a great product in theory, but my unit failed after less than 4 hours of use. It was working great initially, but then the LED's flickered and shut off. I thought the lights might have shorted, but after running some tests, I found this unit to be the issue. Thankfully only this unit failed, and it didn't ruin the lights as well. Not sure if it was defective, or just poorly made, but either way, this was a bust. I ended up replacing this with a branded converter that turned out to be a little cheaper and came with a 2-year warranty.
I needed this rectifier to power 140' of outdoor LED strip lighting (12V DC, ~35W) (in a bocce ball court) from my low power landscaping lighting transformer (12V AC). I installed it inside a low voltage junction box for additional weather protection. I was surprised that I could find no other similar product. Now that I have used it, I'm eyeing lots of other outdoor lighting projects that I can use these for.
