Out of Bounds
LeviSListen, son, let me tell you a story. So, when I was about your age, in my mid twenties, there was this party I would crash with the boys. Everyone's ought to be there, it was the spring break from college and work. It was well before your mother, so your old man was looking for some ladies that night. Unfortunately for me, at some point the boys have split up and left me alone in the corner! Each one of them was somewhere else in the house, talkin' to some folks I didn't know, or already hitting on some other girl. I didn't have so much of a presence, you know. But I tried anyway. So I did a little of walking around, saw the kitchen, went to the dining hall... Turns out, there's this girl in the couch all alone, drinking and looking to others but not really interacting to no one.
Interestingly enough, she did crack a smile from time to time, as she was paying attention to the crowd. I looked at her well enough, and she shared a smile with me.
Your old man was confident at that time, but yet I need some courage. I took a drink and setted next to her on the couch. I said hi, she said hello, and I decided to straight out of the bat say to her that she was a pretty lady. So, out of nowhere, she replies back, oh, thank you, I know I am!
So I said, 'well aren't you humble', and she said, 'well, just stating a fact over here'. I got a little bit destabilized. So I'm like, 'well you're just right you know, you just happen to be a very cute one'. She then said: 'thank you! but that's unfortunately an understatement. I am the most beautiful girl you will ever meet!'
The way she told me that, you see, she really meant it. Telling me that with a smile. I didn't know what to say. She was pretty, all right. Not your usual kind of pretty, I suppose. But the most beautiful one? She was, I don't know. Just fine.
I said, kind of nervous, 'well I don't know about that... there's the girl on television, a celebrity... do you, do you watch films?' and she replied 'oh, I must know about this one. she must be lovely, all right. but i'm still the most beautiful girl. I'm sorry!
Well, I'm embarrassed to say this but your old man just wanted that night to end. So, to cut the story short, I told her, 'hey, would you like to hang out with me? we could kiss'. And she said, oh, I'm sorry. I can't. I'm, like... intransponível.
And I said what? Just what the hell is that? She told me that she was a Brazillian girl, and they have this word that they use, "intransponivel". I still don't know what the hell that means. But she did wrote it down for me in a napkin, so I remembered it to this day.
Well, after that we parted ways... I couldn't get her number or anything. But I remember waking up the next day and thinking, oh god. She was indeed the most beautiful girl in the world. Not because I really believed that, but because she said so. Just in her saying that, it became truth! And I looked at her, remembered her, differently.
So, my son. Don't get me wrong, I think your mom is in fact the most beautiful girl. But believe in your words, ok? Believe in what you say. Your words are magic.
