The bus rumbled out of Ourense under a sky the colour of slate, leaving the city's steaming thermal baths behind. Instead of the obvious highway north, we took a winding route west, plunging into the emerald embrace of Galicia. The air smelled damp and green, thick with the scent of eucalyptus and damp earth. We snaked along narrow lanes flanked by ancient stone walls draped in ivy, past tiny villages where laundry fluttered like colourful flags in the misty air. Somewhere near Verín, the landscape shifted subtly, rolling hills giving way to the dramatic, vine-terraced slopes of the Sil Canyon. We stopped briefly in a hamlet where an old man sold chestnuts roasted over a charcoal brazier, their smoky sweetness a welcome surprise.

Crossing into Castilla y León felt like entering a different world, drier, more austere, but no less captivating. We bypassed the big cities, detouring through the sleepy town of Ponferrada, clinging to the shadows of its Templar castle. Then, a long haul across the high plains, the horizon stretching endlessly under vast skies, punctuated only by the occasional lonely windmill. As dusk began to paint the sky in oranges and purples, we descended into the lush greenery of Galicia once more, skirting the vibrant coastal city of Vigo and heading inland to the medieval charm of Pontevedra, where we spent a surprisingly restful night wandering its pedestrian-only lanes.

The next leg felt like an adventure into the unknown. We climbed steadily, leaving the familiar green behind as we entered the rugged, heart-stopping beauty of the Pyrenees. Snow dusted the higher peaks even in late spring, and the air grew crisp and thin. The road clung to mountainsides, offering breathtaking vistas into deep, forested valleys. We passed tiny shepherds' huts and flocks of sheep with tinkling bells. Emerging on the other side, Catalonia unfolded before us – a patchwork of olive groves and vineyards under a brilliant blue sky. We didn't head straight for the coast; instead, we detoured to the enchanting medieval bridge of Besalú, its stone arches reflecting in the slow-moving water below. Finally, the bus rolled into Girona, not as a final destination, but as a vibrant conclusion to a journey that revealed Spain not through its main arteries, but through its quiet, winding veins and unexpected, unforgettable heartlands.
