Our Story

The Bookshop Lebanon was founded in July 2020, in the midst of Lebanon's early crisis days, just two weeks before the Beirut explosion. It was born out of a deeply personal frustration: an avid reader, called by some a book dragon, struggling with the rising cost of books and the growing difficulty of finding titles that truly mattered. Rather than accept that reality, building an alternative felt like the only logical response.

What made that alternative possible was the convergence of two distinct but complementary lives. Years spent in accounting, financial advisory, and fractional finance, the kind of work that demands precision, long-term thinking, and an understanding of how sustainable ventures are built and kept alive, sat alongside a lifelong passion for reading. When The Bookshop took shape, both worlds came with it: the business acumen to run it with discipline and longevity, and the literary sensibility to curate it with genuine care. There was no need to choose between the two. The Bookshop, in a sense, was always where those two worlds were going to find each other.

The Bookshop's name is drawn from Penelope Fitzgerald's novel of the same title, a story about the courage and quiet resilience it takes to open a bookshop, and all the obstacles that come with it. The name was chosen knowingly, with eyes open to the challenges ahead. Unlike the novel's ending, ours is still being written. The story also quietly insists on something else that we took to heart: the profound difference a passionate bookseller can make in a reader's life, one book at a time.

We are a niche bookshop with a carefully curated focus on the books that endure: classics, history, philosophy, business, theology, and the great works that have shaped how we think and who we are. Every edition we offer is chosen not only for its quality but for its affordability, because we believe that access to great books should never be a privilege.
