Russian rule was further extended to Baku, Genje, the Derbent khanate, and the area of Talish. In the nineteenth century the main weaving zone of the Caucasus was in the japanese Transcaucasus south of the mountains that bisect the region diagonally, in a region which at present includes Azerbaijan, Armenia, and elements of Georgia. In this project, there was an emphasis on the ‘traditional’ and ‘authentic’ carpet, but this curiosity was primarily based not on the wishes of the Turkish women weaving the carpets but quite the German scholar and his perception of Turkish tradition.
