Oregon’s national title hopes were dashed with last weekend’s stunning 31-28 loss to Arizona State – but the Ducks can still wreak some havoc in their regular-season finale as they host rival Oregon State. The Beavers suffered their own shocking defeat last Saturday to Washington State and need a win over the Ducks in order to be considered for a bowl game.
The hosts opened as 20-point favorites, though the line has since dropped to -19. The Ducks have been favored by 20-plus points in five of the past eight meetings, going 5-0 SU and 2-2-1 ATS.
It didn’t matter to Oregon State ATS bettors who had the cover comfortably in the bag, but the decision to have the Beavers go for it on fourth down just past midfield while up five points with 1:14 remaining wound up backfiring in a major way. Anthony Gordon marched the Cougars 58 yards in 1:08 for the go-ahead touchdown, leaving Oregon State one win shy of bowl eligibility.
But the Beavers can take solace in the fact that they’ve now scored 35 or more points in three of their past four games, including a pair of 50-plus performances in that span. Quarterback Jake Luton has been sensational over that stretch, exceeding 280 passing yards three times while racking up 12 touchdown passes against just two interceptions.
Oregon’s defense dominated early in the season but had been playing with fire in recent weeks, allowing an average of 30 points to Washington, Washington State and USC over a three-game span. And those defensive issues ultimately bit the Ducks badly against the Sun Devils, as they allowed the hosts to rack up 535 yards while holding possession for nearly 37 minutes.
But while the Beavers are in position to put up some points at Autzen Stadium, Oregon should make a considerable dent in the scoreboard as well. The Ducks come in having scored 28 or more points in six straight games, with the Justin Herbert-led offense ranking 19th in the nation in total offense (463.3 yards per game) and 22nd in third-down success rate (46 percent).
A Beavers cover is the most likely outcome here, with Oregon State looking to atone for a 40-point loss to Oregon last year and the Ducks considerably less motivated after losing out on whatever national title opportunity they had.
