OpenAI has launched its first two courses under the OpenAI Certifications initiative to equip workers and educators with practical AI skills as demand for AI literacy grows across industries.
With the new offerings, AI Foundations and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, OpenAI plans to certify 10 million Americans by 2030.
“AI will unlock more opportunities for more people than any technology in history,” the company said in its blog, noting that more than 800 million people use ChatGPT each week to build skills, find work, and solve problems.
A PwC research cited by OpenAI shows that workers with AI skills earn about 56% more than those without.
AI Foundations
AI Foundations is designed to teach core, practical AI skills directly within ChatGPT. Learners can practice tasks, receive contextual feedback, and reflect on their work in a single environment. “ChatGPT acts as the tutor, the practice space, and the feedback loop,” OpenAI noted in the announcement.
Participants who complete the course will receive a certification verifying job-ready AI skills, with additional coursework and projects available to progress toward full OpenAI Certification.
The course will be available through pilot programmes with employers and public-sector partners, including Walmart, John Deere, Lowe’s, Boston Consulting Group, Hearst, Russell Reynolds Associates, Upwork, Elevance Health, Accenture, and the state governments of Delaware and New Jersey.
OpenAI is working with Coursera, ETS, and Credly to ensure the courses meet standards for learning design, measurement, and portability. College students in the ChatGPT Lab will receive early access. Pilots are also underway at Arizona State University and the California State University system.
Course for Teachers
Alongside the workplace training programme, OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers—a Coursera-based course built for K–12 educators. It covers how ChatGPT works, how to adapt the tool for classroom use, and how to apply it to instructional and administrative tasks.
The course will later be integrated directly into ChatGPT and ChatGPT for Teachers by early 2026. More educator-focused certifications will follow.
The initiative builds on OpenAI’s partnership with the American Federation of Teachers to train 400,000 educators, as well as on programmes such as ChatGPT for Teachers and Study Mode.
Pathway for OpenAI Jobs Platform
By linking learning, certification, and employment pathways, OpenAI said the two courses lay the groundwork for its upcoming OpenAI Jobs Platform.
The AI giant will continue collaborating with jobs site Indeed, and is launching a new partnership with freelance marketplace Upwork to make it easier for businesses to hire people with the specific skills they need.
