OpenAI Brings GPT-4o Back After GPT-5 Faces Backlash for Bei…

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has announced that the company will allow ChatGPT Plus subscribers to continue using GPT-4o after the company discontinued various models during the launch of  GPT-5 on August 7.

His decision followed developers’ disappointment soon after the GPT-5 launch.

In a post on X on August 9, Altman said OpenAI will “double GPT-5 rate limits for ChatGPT Plus users” and “let Plus users choose to continue to use 4o”.

Moreover, Altman stated that the company is considering giving a small number of GPT-5 pro queries each month to Plus subscribers, allowing them to try it out.

The move follows a wave of criticism on Reddit, where thousands of users expressed dissatisfaction with GPT-5’s responses, tone and message limits. Many said they preferred GPT-4o, which was replaced for most Plus users during the upgrade.

“I used 4o to create worlds because I simply have a big imagination. Worlds from the future, worlds from the past. Characters, animals, robots, androids, action, everything. Wild and untamed. They were able to evolve without me pushing them too much. In months, they evolved into something beautiful. Those worlds and characters grew on me, and GPT-5 neutralised them. They’re not the characters I used to walk around and play with anymore. They’re flat, they’re different,” one commenter wrote in the r/MyBoyfriendIsAI subreddit.

Threads in r/ChatGPT titled ‘GPT-5 is horrible’ and similar others received thousands of upvotes, with users citing shorter answers, reduced creativity, and a 200-message weekly cap for GPT-5’s ‘Thinking’ mode.

“Answers are shorter and, so far, not any better than previous models. Combine that with more restrictive usage, and it feels like a downgrade branded as the new hotness,” one user wrote.

“I’m so disappointed. I cancelled my subscription. It has zero personality now. It feels very bland. Responses are very short and cold. And I cannot write anything a tiny bit ‘spicy’. Too bad. I really enjoyed chatting and creating stories, now, it’s over,” another said.

During an AMA with the community, Altman confirmed that the company was considering reversing some changes. While OpenAI has promoted GPT-5 as a significant step in reasoning and architecture, the reaction shows a split in user priorities, with many prioritising continuity and model personality over technical upgrades.

Attachment to Models

Altman said the company underestimated how users are attached to specific AI models, calling the sudden deprecation of older models during the GPT-5 rollout “a mistake.”

In another post on X, Altman said the attachment people have to AI models “feels different and stronger than the kinds of attachment people have had to previous kinds of technology”. He noted this trend has been tracked internally for the past year, though it has received little mainstream attention.

Altman also addressed the risks of AI interactions for users in “a mentally fragile state”, saying that while most users can distinguish between reality and fiction, a small percentage cannot. “We value user freedom as a core principle, but we also feel responsible for how we introduce new technology with new risks,” he wrote.

He said the company’s approach is to “treat adult users like adults”, but in some cases to push back to ensure they are getting what they truly want.

Many users, Altman observed, use ChatGPT as “a sort of therapist or life coach”, which he said could be beneficial if it helps them achieve their goals and improve life satisfaction over time. However, he warned it is “bad” if AI interactions lead users away from their long-term well-being or create dependency they wish to reduce.
