Ontario Sump Pump Guide 2026 - Installation, Backup Systems and Maintenance

Sump pumps are essential in most Ontario homes with basements. Ontario clay soils, high water tables, and spring snowmelt all contribute to hydrostatic pressure against foundations. This guide covers sump pump types, backup systems, installation requirements, and 2026 GTA cost ranges.

Types of Sump Pumps

Pedestal sump pump: Motor mounted above pit. Easier to service, less expensive. Less powerful than submersible. Lifespan 15-25 years. Cost: $150-$350.

Submersible sump pump: Motor submerged in pit. Quieter, more powerful, better for high-volume applications. Lifespan 10-15 years. Cost: $200-$500. Most common in GTA new construction.

Battery backup pump: Secondary pump activates during power failure or if primary pump fails. Critical in Ontario where major rainfall often coincides with thunderstorms causing power outages. Cost: $300-$700 installed. Brands: Wayne, Zoeller, Liberty.

Water-powered backup: Uses municipal water pressure to pump — no battery, runs indefinitely during outage. Requires municipal water connection to pit. Discharges 2 gallons from water supply per 1 gallon pumped — check with municipality re: water use bylaws.

OBC Pit Requirements

Ontario Building Code requires sump pit minimum 450mm (18") diameter, minimum 600mm (24") depth. Pit must have watertight cover. Discharge must go to storm sewer, not sanitary sewer (confirmed with local municipality).

Discharge Requirements

Sump discharge must terminate minimum 1.5m from foundation and drain away from structure. In Toronto and many GTA municipalities, sump must connect to storm sewer — check local bylaws before discharging to grade or weeping tile.

Installation and Replacement Costs (GTA 2026)

Primary sump pump replacement: $400-$900 including pump and labour. New sump pit installation in existing basement: $1,500-$3,500 including saw-cut, pit, pump, and discharge line. Full interior drainage system with sump: $8,000-$20,000.
