The term online magazine refers to a magazine that is published on the Internet via bulletin boards and other public computer networks. The computer magazine Datamation was one of the first publications to switch from print to online publication. Webzines are the slang term for online magazines that are distributed via the World Wide Web. Small magazines and newsletters that are distributed via electronic mail, such as an ezine, are referred to as e-zines (or e-zines). The terms "cyberzine" and "hyperzine," which refer to the electronic distribution of resources, are sometimes used by social groups. Some online magazines may also call themselves "electronic magazines" or "e-magazines" to better reflect their readership or to capture alternative terms and spellings in online searches.

There are some similarities between an online magazine, a blog, and an online newspaper. However, an online magazine is usually distinguished by its editorial control. In order to make sure that all of the content is up to the standards of the magazine's audience and its editors, submissions are typically reviewed by editorial boards or editors.

Digital reproductions of print magazine titles are now available for a fee from many large print-publishing companies. These digital magazines are also referred to as online magazines and digital magazines by these service providers.

Online journals are commonly used to describe periodicals aimed at academics, scientists, and other professionals in the fields of business and industry.
